For nearly two decades
hes been hard at work
behind the scenes.
Hes been the driving
force behind many of the
citys environmental proj-
ects.
He oversees one of the
citys committees, the
W a t e r f r o n t
E n v i r o n m e n t a l
Committee, sits on others,
and is generally regarded
as one of St. Clair Shores
most active volunteers.
Now, the region has
taken notice of Joe St.
John, and honored him
with a distinguished
award.
The Beautification
Council of Southeastern
Michigan honored St.
John with the 2014
Individual Service Award
f or Out st andi ng
Community Service.
The honor was be-
stowed on St. John at the
councils meeting in
Wyandotte Sept.17.
The award came as a
complete surprise to the
longtime Shores resident,
who had no idea he had
been nominated.
It was a total surprise,
St. John said. I really had
no idea. I got there, and I
was sitting there, and Im
thinking, why is this guy
talking about Joe St.
John? Then before I knew
it I was getting this award.
Im really honored.
St. John was nominated
by members of the St.
Cl a i r S h o r e s
B e a u t i f i c a t i o n
Commission, then select-
ed for the honor by a sub-
committee of the beautifi-
cation council from a long
list of candidates.
Joe is a very deserving
recipient, St. Clair
Shores Beautification
Commission Chairperson
Lillian Claycomb said.
Weve worked together a
lot over the years, and we
thought that Joe would be
the perfect person for this
award. So, we filled out
the paperwork, did what
we had to do, and nomi-
nated Joe St. John. Were
really honored to be able
to do that, and really glad
that he won.

Last years inaugural
Made in Michigan
Festival was an unques-
tioned success.
However, for this years
event, organizers, includ-
ing senior center director,
Sue Fickau, wanted to
take it to another level.
If they wanted a bigger
and better festival, said
festival patron Maryann
Culich. They did it.
Theres definitely more to
it this year.
The effort Fickau and
others put into the 2014
installment paid off in a
big way, as more guests,
more vendors and even
more barbecuers came.
We set out this year to
really step it up, Fickau
said. We saw what we
had last year and wanted
to be bigger. I think we did
that. Now, next year, there
will be even more im-
provements and upgrades
to it.
The addition of an ex-
pansive childrens activity
area, both inside the cen-
ter and outside, was just
part of the upgrade.
My daughter is having
a blast, Thomas Smith of
Harper Woods, said. I
came here and I really
was worried shed be
bored. I think now, she
could spend all day here.
Thomas daughter,
JQuinn, spent time inside
the center in the chil-
drens area, and also
found the time to work on
a craft or two outside, un-
der the guidance of
Councilwoman Candice
Rusie who had volun-
teered at the event.
I love that they offer
this to the kids, Smith
said. It gives me a chance
to walk around and take
my time. Theres lots of
good stuff here.
The sentiment was
echoed by many who at-
tended the festival, and
many love the concept of
supporting local business-
es at such events.
The Made in Michigan
festival theme has just
completely taken off,
Fickau said Saturday.
Weve doubled in size for
vendors. Weve got food
trucks. We had a 5K race
this morning that had 100
participants. Were so
blessed and excited.
Vendors and patrons
came from as far away as
Traverse City to take part
in the festival, Fickau said.
The festival coincides
with the centers apple pie
fundraising program,
which is among the most
anticipated programs in
the city each year.
Volunteers at the center
peel apples, mix spices,
roll dough, shape crust
and baked over 1,200
from scratch apple pies
this year then promptly
sold every one in a matter
of days.
We sold out of them by
Friday this year, Fickau
said. Were just so
blessed.
Money raised from the
sale of pies, along with
the funds collected at the
5K race, go directly to
the centers meals pro-
gram a program that
provides meals to se-
niors in the city and sur-
rounding areas.
That money is greatly
n e e d e d , s h e
explained,It really is.
Fickau said any other
money raised by the festi-
val itself is used to offset
the cost of the festival.
That said, the success of
the event over the past
two years means that the
break-even point of put-
ting together such an
event is closer.
We probably need one
more year for the festival,
as a whole, to bring a
profit, she said. But
were very excited about
the direction it is going.
Next years event is al-
ready in the works, and
could very well includ a
sanctioned barbecue con-
test, Fickau said.
Some of the barbecue
contestants travel all
around the country, she
said. They were in love
with the facility here and
they said, people would
love to come here, to this
location. It seems like a
win-win for them and us.

Gaidica will make during
his 9:30 a.m. Thursday,

The event runs from 9 a.m.

my mid-30s, SCUBA certi-
fied around age 40 and my

what tomorrow will bring.
If you have a need for
change or your boss

change by letting you go,

trusted advisors around
you who can help you with
a new focus on life. Dont
just quit and hope it all
works out. That may work
for some but it is better to
make your plans and then
jump into the deep water.
This is the second ap-
pearance for Gaidica at
the Senior Expo, said Joan
DeRonne, Senior Expo
committee member and
one of its founders. The in-
vitation was extended be-
cause so many people
miss him, she said.
Gaidica is a three-time
Emmy award-winning
weather anchor on WDIV-
TV and retired this sum-
mer. He begins a program
Force4Good, a part-time
segment focusing on peo-
ple and organizations do-
ing good things for other
people, Gaidica explained.
In its 21st year, the
Senior Expo includes
health and wellness
screenings, comprehen-
sive community resource
information, entertain-
ment by the Gentlemen of
Swing, a complimentary
lunch and raffle, exhibits,
give-aways and experts to
answer legal and health-
related questions. It in-
cludes more than 50 ex-
hibits.

Turning this years Hog

the lake is unrivaled.
Ive been fishing in this
lake for almost 70 years,
St. John said. And I think
it needs to be protected,
preserved and treasured.
Im very passionate about
it. I really am. A lot of peo-
ple dont really care about
the lake, and I want to
change that. I want to be
someone who does.

member of the Waterfront

Cleanup in the city, and
helps coordinate neigh-

education and elimination
of invasive species, not to
mention all the work St.
John does with the
Michigan Department of
Natural Resources and
other organization
throughout the state.
You know, when Joe
accepted the award he
said, This award should
not be for me,
Claycomb recalled. It
should be for all the peo-
ple through the years
that have volunteered
their time, their service,
their money to make our
waterways safer and
clean and our city look-
ing better. I thought that
was a wonderful reply to
the award, but thats the

A day of learning for seniors
This is Batman. This 1-year old Chiweenie ( a
mix between a dachshund and a chihuahua) had
a tough start to life, but now hes looking for a lov-
ing forever home. However, like the real Dark
Knight, this Batman has some special needs.
Batman lived in a cage all his life, so he needs a
quiet house with adults only. Hes good with oth-
er dogs, but hes got to find a forever home with a
fenced-in yard. He has some fear issues, but his
foster mom says hes making improvements ev-
ery day. Hes a loving little boy, but he just needs
some time to adjust and trust. For more informa-

Acne is the most common
teenage skin problem, afect-
ing about 20 million teenag-
ers each year.
For many, beyond medi-
cal concerns, teen acne has
signifcant psychosocial con-
sequences. Tis is why teens
with even mild cases of acne
are so ofen concerned about
treatment options.
Treatment for teens with
mild acne can start with over-
the-counter products such
as those containing benzoyl
peroxide or salicylic acid.
When acne is unresponsive,
or if the patient is experienc-
ing more severe cystic acne,
a physician may be required.
Te physician may prescribe
topically applied medications
such as antibiotics & reti-
noids, oral antibiotics, & in
severe cases oral isotretinoin.
Many cosmetics, especially
some cleansing creams &
moisturizers have greasy
bases that can aggravate acne.
Additionally, certain hair
products can cause breakouts.
It is best to use as few cosmet-
ics as possible, or only those
labeled non-comedogenic
or oil-free which are usually
made of a water base and are
better for acne-prone skin.
If you feel your skin is espe-
cially greasy, wash your face
gently two or three times a
day with a mild soap or gen-
tle face cleanser. But do not
vigorously rub, scrub or use
abrasive cleaners.
You can learn more about
skin clearing treatments at
the American Academy of
Dermatologys website at
www.aad.org.

tact your dermatologist or call

The notion there is a
proper way to grieve is
among the fallacies to be
addressed at a seminar
hosted by The Family
Center of Grosse Pointe
and Harper Woods enti-
tled, Understanding
Loss, Grief and the
Healing Process for
Families.
The free seminar is part
of the Family Center's Ask
The Experts series and is
held 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 9, at The Grosse
Pointe Academy, 171
Lakeshore, Grosse Pointe
Farms.
The seminar is designed
to arm participants with
useful tools and resources
to help foster resilience
within their families and
communities.
Leading the sessions
are three grief experts and
topics: Rev. Peter J.M.
Henry, pastor of Grosse
Pointe Memorial Church
The Emotional and
Spiritual Components of
Recovery; Mary
Petersen, psychotherapist
Overcoming grief;
and Mary Beth Garvey,
family therapist The
Grieving Process and
Stages of Grief.
All families are
touched by grief, whether
its a family illness or
death, the loss of a be-
loved pet or a tragedy
within our community,
said Garvey. Our
goal is to help participants
discover strategies to as-
sist the grieving process,
find hope and then begin
to heal.

to register call

(313) 432-3832.

With 10,000 Baby
Boomers retiring each day,
and Gaidica in that catego-
ry, he said he has found
the generation is asking
the same questions. How
do you prepare for retire-
ment and what fills the
free time?
I would tell others to
prepare their lives for
change, if they feel it com-
ing. Be ready to become
more nimble financially
and otherwise. Also, pray
deeply about where you
are being led. I would get a
great sense of peace and
comfort with each change
or shift. If I didnt have that
feeling, I really had to
question the direction.
Also, if you want to make
change, do it.
My pastor at OakPointe
also advised me that if I
was feeling a change com-
ing to make it sooner rath-
er than later while I was
able to serve in good
health and more. I also
urge everybody to get
their spouses on board.
Origins
Its important for both
the senior and their fami-
lies to attend the event,
DeRonne said.
Stemming from the
need of keeping their ag-
ing mothers active,
DeRonne and Assumption
member Ernest Zachary,
began the wheels setting
in motion Assumptions
exercise program for se-
niors.
Assumption was look-
ing at a generation of se-
niors living longer and
healthier. How can we
help them, she said. We
knew the importance of
exercise.
The churchs exercise
director, Barb Otul, at-
tended workshops in
Boston and at Wayne
State University, after
which she developed a se-
nior chair exercise pro-
gram. Through a grant
from the Area Agency on
Aging to purchase exer-
cise equipment and the
program was approved by
doctors and WSU faculty,
physiologist John Wirth,
Jerome Ciullo and Bob
Samaras Ph.D.
A Senior Expo commit-
tee was established and
partnering with the Metro
East Chamber of
Commerce the initial
Senior Expo with Neal
Shine as its first speaker
and printed a folded 8 1/2
by 11-inch 20-page re-
source guide was present-
ed in 1992. We did the re-
search on what was avail-
able. Metro East Chamber
of Commerce joined us as
a co-sponsor. We expand-
ed to include hospitals,
health care facilities and
social services, DeRonne
said. There has been
some testimonials from
Senior Expo (attendees).
They have discovered
needs they werent aware
of, other ways to live with
some of their difficulties
(and) in their way and ex-
tending life in some
ways.
