SAFETY STANDARDS AND CALCULATION ASSUMPTIONS
The correct use of a product, distinguishes both the Customer and the manufac- turer. METALSISTEM recommends that Customers make use of their product in strict conformity with the design characteristics given and standards of best prac- tice.
The design and assembly of the racking systems must be carried out by qualified personnel. METALSISTEM is not responsible for any improper or inappropriate use of its product.
a) Floor slab loading Prior to installation of the product, check that the floor slab is of adequate load capacity.
b) Site installation The site installation of racking systems must be carried out by expert person- nel following the assembly criteria and specifications tabled in this technical catalogue. Site personnel must ensure that all frame bolts have been tightened and all safety elements have been installed.
c) Rack alignment While assembling the racking system, the verticality of the frames must be checked for both the X and Z directions. Unless more restrictive standards have been specified the deviation off both the X and Z planes must not exceed 10mm or 1/350 of the height (ie Max Deviation = H/350), whichever is greater.(figure 1). For more detailed information on verticality tolerances refer to Operating Instructions Assembly of Super 4-5-6 Racks Code:ISQ01_04/C_011.
d) Load bearing capacity plate Load bearing capacity plates must be fastened in a clearly visible position nominating the model type, year of assembly, load bearing capacity of the frames, load bearing capacity per pair of beams or per shelf (expressed as a uniformly distributed load), the load unit applied, the height of the first level from ground and the number of levels. (figure 2)
e) Rack safety standard Rack structures must be fastened to the floor slab via two anchor bolts for every upright.
In cases where the height of the frame is: - more than 5 times the depth, for single entry racking; - or, more than 10 times the depth, for double entry racking; that structure must be connected via top ties. The racking structure must also be supplied complete with column and/or frame protectors.
f) Reference Standards The theoretical calculation is based on the following reference standards: - C.N.R. 10011/88 Rack alignment
Load bearing capacity plates 400 x 300 - code 67011 Load bearing capacity plates 300 x 240 code 67012

g) Software references The theoretical calculations of finished elements were elaborated with the SICS program. Guide lines followed as the basis for the calculations are those of the organisation CISI (Costruttori Italiani Scaffalature Industriali).
h) Frame load bearing capacity The Superbuild load bearing capacity graph (Graph 1) shows the load bearing capacity of frames used for pallet racking systems. These are expressed as a function of the height, from ground, of the first pair of beams. The following underlying assumptions apply when interpreting the graph. The racking has: - a minimum of 4 consecutive bays of equal length; - a minimum of 3 levels divided equally in height - an equal and uniformly distributed load has been applied to all levels. Given that the load bearing capacity of the rack may depend on other elements such as, the number of levels, the proportion between height and depth, in- stallation in seismic areas etc., contact the METALSISTEM Technical Depart- ment for consultation should there be doubts about any aspects of the instal- lation.
i) Load bearing capacities of beam pairs The load bearing capacities of the beam pairs were calculated with the follow- ing assumptions: - loads are uniformly distributed; - admissible tensile stress of the material; - deflection 1/200. It is mandatory to place beam retaining security clips on either side of all beams.
l) Custom built applications The METALSISTEM Technical department is at the disposal of its customers for any specific calculations or custom built applications.
METALSISTEM reserves the right to modify the technical characteristics of its products at any time as it sees fit. Technical data, dimensions and character- istics given in this document are indicative only.

SUPERBUILD 75/110/145 ROW SPACERS AND WALL TIES
Row spacers and wall ties (figures 19 and 20) are fixed to the uprights in pairs via M8 x 110 bolts (code VITB811Z). Both spacer elements are ordered in variable lengths (L) applying the following formula:
Where:
L = length of row spacer or wall tie N = Clear span between frames or a frame and wall
BEAMS
The beams are closed sections of varying thickness to which connectors, with 5 anchor points, are welded at either extremity. A channel, present in the upper face of the beam provides a lip within which a variety of components such as shelf units, secondary beams, drum cradles, bin cradles and so on are inserted.
The load bearing capacities shown on the tables refer to the loading produced by Europallets in a good and sufficiently ridged state of repair. The loads applied must be stable and suited to the in- tended application of the racking system. Disposable pallets or pallets of a low quality (not Europal- lets) can only be used in conjunction with secondary beams and/or shelves.
Series /3 beams may only be used for the storage of pallets producing loads no greater than 1000 kgf, series /4 beams may only be used for the storage of pallets producing loads no greater than 1200 kgf, series /5 beams may only be used for pallets producing loads no greater than 1500 kgf and series /6 beams may only be used for pallets producing loads no greater that 2000 kgf.

CODE DESCRIPTION
SPACCELZ Z Profile
The beams are powder coated in standard Yellow Ral 1004 , applied via the following procedure:
Hot wash degreasing and iron phosphate pre-treatment; application of thermosetting powder paint; curing at a temperature of approximately 240C with a force ventilated air circulation oven.
The powder coating of beams in colours other than yellow (in the Ral scale of colours) is possible when quantities requested are greater than 100 pieces with the payment of an additional lump sum to cover line stoppage for the change of colour. These beams require longer lead times.

DIAGONAL STRUTS
The pallet rack diagonal struts are used to improve the beams resistance to horizontal loads. METALSISTEM requires that diagonal struts are applied to bays of spans greater than 2700mm
Racking with modular shelving or pallet racking with secondary beams do not require the application of diagonal struts.

Be sure to check the maximum beam load, it will be the limiting factor for some beam / span combinations.
Shelves are available in H25 or H29 versions (with a height of 25mm and 29mm respectively), with folded back ends along its 300mm width which is inserted into the beams lip. The shelf may be ordered from 400mm to 1600mm depths in intervals of 100mm. SECONDARY BEAM
SECONDARY BEAM (made from zinc coated steel)
LOAD BEARING CAPACITY TABLE OF A PAIR OF SECONDARY BEAMS
Assumption : Loads are uniformly distributed over a pair of secondary beams
Secondary beams with slotted holes are also available. The slots allows the connection of up to three tertiary beams. The following variables determine the number and distance between the slotted holes: The length of the secondary beam The minimum length Y between the slots (figure attached to table 14) The minimum distance X between the first (and last) slot and the end of the secondary beam. (figure attached to table 14) A code has not been assigned to slotted secondary beams. Therefore one needs to specify in writing with slotted holes next to the secondary beam description, for their supply. The maximum number of slots that may be inserted along the length of the secondary beam is shown in table 14 below. Should the location of the slots not be specified, their position will be assigned equidistantly off the centre line as shown in the figure below.

LIGHTENED SECONDARY BEAMS
This METALSISTEM component solves difficulties that have arisen as a re- sult of revisions of a number of fire standards (shelving with a coverage of less than 50%) across Europe.
The shelf is composed of a series of secondary beams (8/10mm gauge) placed side by side. Thus free spaces between the open spans enable wa- ter, brought into action by the sprinkler system, to pass through the shelving system.
Given that this is a special application of the product, codes, prices and technical data will need to be discussed with the METALSISTEM Technical Office on a case by case basis.
