Learning Outcomes
The students will be given an introduction to chemistry and familiarised with the
basic principles and concepts of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.
On successful completion of this module, the students should be able to:
1. Apply chemical nomenclature to simple compounds.
2. Determine physical and safety-related data for materials, and interpret it in
context.
3. Carry out simple stoichiometric calculations.
4. Apply the law of mass action to systems in homogenous and heterogenous
equilibrium.
5. Describe the kinetics of chemical reactions and interpret experiments on the
kinetics of reactions.
6. Interpret electrochemical reactions.
7. involving the chemical elements in the main periodic groups and d-metals
8. Describe the structure and synthesis of polymers and interpret the
mechanical and thermal properties of polymers.
9. Explain basic chemical concepts and models, and analyse, interpret and apply
them.

WHAT IS PERSONAL
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT?
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is
defined as - any clothing, equipment or
substance designed to be worn by a person
and protect the person from risk of injury or
illness
Describe some examples of PPE in your
workplace?
CATEGORIES OF PPE
head protection
eye protection
hearing protection
respiratory protection
high visibility clothing
hand protection
foot protection
skin and overall body protection
HEAD PROTECTION
a possibility of being struck on the head by
falling or protruding/fixed object/s
operation of any types of lifting equipment
inadvertent head contact may be made with
electrical hazards
To be worn when?
TYPES
EYE PROTECTION
must be worn whilst performing any operation where
there is a risk that foreign bodies may enter the eyes
handling hazardous substances
working in any area where the risk of
an eye injury exists
or directed by local operating procedures
TYPES:
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
provides protection against atmospheres deficient
in oxygen or high in contaminants
provides protection against harmful substances
which could enter the body
purifying the air that a person breathes
eg particle filter or gas filter etc.
supplying the person with respirable air
eg oxygen through an air line or air hose
Two ways of providing personal protection:
HAND PROTECTION
correct glove application can protect against
unnecessary injury or disability
selected after a risk assessment and consultation
with workers and suppliers
disposable gloves
fabric gloves
leather gloves
metal mesh gloves
aluminized gloves
hand protectors

CONCLUSION
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is
defined as - any clothing, equipment or
substance designed to be worn by a
person and protect the person from risk
of injury or illness
All workers have obligations in regards to
PPE
a risk assessment should be conducted in
conjunction with a job analysis
CONCLUSION - cont
PPE should only be considered as a control
measure when hazards cannot be
controlled in any other way or in
conjunction with other controls
PPE must be used, maintained, stored and
replaced as described in Standards, ISO,
ASTM, AS ect.
REVIEW QUESTIONS:
1. Describe when PPE should be used as a
control option?
2. In the workplace, can the same items of PPE
be used for all hazards?
3. Describe how PPE should be stored in the
workplace?
