Task #1 - Describe and explain a Web 2.0 technology
Title: DropTask

Description: DropTask is a free web-based task management application that offers individuals
and teams a completely fresh approach to managing to-do lists. With DropTask, a basic to-do
list is transformed into a geometric dashboard that allows people to see and manage all their
projects and tasks in one bright, colorful space. Users create circles to categorize their tasks and
then fill these with further circles representing all the individual tasks they need to carry out.
Each task bubble can be dragged and dropped into a task group bubble. Each of your tasks can
have a due date assigned; files attached, and are given a priority status. Tasks can also be further
broken down into sub tasks, which are shown as segments that light up as they are completed,
clearly showing progress. Notes and files can be attached to tasks, and teams can collaborate by
adding comments for everyone to see. DropTask can be used individually or with a group. Group
members can sign into DropTask to check on the status of a task and to assign new tasks to the
group. It could also be a great tool for students to use for organizing group projects. DropTask
fosters user participation, collaboration, interactivity and content sharing. It gives the users the
opportunity to create, share, publish and collaborate.

Task #2 Link the technology to the curriculum

First Activity: Developing Focus Questions
Core Curriculum Area: ELA, Social Studies, or Science
Educational Level: Grade 7
Role of Web 2.0 Technology: Students will use DropTask to work in groups to develop
focus questions for a research project. Students will collaborate on assignment bubbles
and work individually on task bubbles within the assignment bubbles. The librarian will
monitor the progress of the group bubbles, and students will share their DropTask group
bubble with the classroom teacher.
Common Core Standard Addressed: Writing Standards 6-12, Grade 7 students,
Production and Distribution of Writing, 6. Use technology, including the Internet, to
produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and
collaborate with others, including linking to and citing sources.
AASL Standard for the 21

Century Learner Addressed: 2.1.5 Collaborate with others to
exchange ideas, develop new understandings, make decisions, and solve problems.
Academic Language: Academic Language will be integrated in the Assignment #3: Think
Deeply bubble. This is where the students will take their lower level thinking questions
(who, what, when, where, why, how) and transform them into academic language high
level thinking questions by layering the questions using comparison, cause and effect,
and importance.
Activity: Students will use DropTask to work in groups to develop focus questions for a
research project in ELA, Social Studies, or Science. Students will join a group bubble
under Developing Focus Questions. The classroom teacher can assign the topic and
starting question, or these can be the first two assignment bubbles within the group
bubble. The students will collaborate through DropTask to decide on Assignment #1:
Topic, and Assignment #2: Starting Question. Within the Assignment #2: Starting
Question bubble, the students will create six task bubbles. The six task bubbles will be
for using the opening question with Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How. Each
task bubble can be assigned to individual members of the group. The third assignment
bubble within the group bubble will be Think Deeply. Within the Assignment 3: Think
Deeply bubble, the students will create four task bubbles. These four task bubbles will be
for the following questions: How are _____ and _____ related? How will/did _____
affect _____? What would/did _____ do to _____? Why might _____ be/have been
important for _____? Each of these four tasks bubbles will be assigned to different group
members. The librarian will monitor discussion and progress of each task and assignment
bubble. When all bubbles are completed, they will be shared with the classroom teacher.

Second Activity: Using Different Sources
Core Curriculum Area: ELA, Social Studies, or Science
Educational Level: Grade 8
Role of Web 2.0 Technology: Students will use DropTask to work in groups on a
research project using different sources. Students will share information found on a topic
using six different types of sources.
Common Core Standard Addressed: Writing Standards 6-12, Grade 8 students, Research
to Build and Present Knowledge, 7. Conduct short research projects to answer a question
(including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating
additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.

Century Learner Addressed: 1.1.9 Collaborate with others to
broaden and deepen understanding.
Academic Language: Academic Language will be integrated by encouraging students to
read different types of resources. For this assignment, students will read books, websites,
subscription databases, multimedia, graphs and charts, and maps and diagrams. Reading
and then thinking and talking about different types of resources are an effective way for
learning academic language.
Activity: Students will use DropTask to work in groups to share information from
different types of sources for a research project in ELA, Social Studies, or Science.
Students will join a group bubble under Using Different Sources. The classroom
teacher can assign the topic, or it can be the first assignment bubble within the group
bubble. The students will collaborate through DropTask to decide on Assignment #1:
Topic. Within the Assignment #1: Topic bubble, the students will create six task bubbles.
The six task bubbles will be for the different types of sources: Books, Websites,
Subscription Databases, Multimedia, Graphs and Charts, and Maps and Diagrams. Within
each task bubble will be three source bubbles. Each source bubble will have a source of
that type. Each source bubble will be assigned to an individual group member. The group
member will share their source and the information found in their source for each of the
six task bubbles. The librarian will monitor discussion and progress of each task, source
and assignment bubble. When all bubbles are completed, they will be shared with the
classroom teacher.
Conclusion: Web 2.0 technology, including DropTask, supports inquiry learning by
providing additional places for students to share ideas. As students share information,
exchange ideas, and question each other, it provokes them to examine their existing
knowledge and devise a plan to pursue their unanswered questions (Berger & Trexler, 2010,
p. 94). Web 2.0 automatically address all of the standards requiring the use of technology,
and meets additional standards for reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language
because all of these areas are required when using and learning a Web 2.0 tool. DropTask
makes this happen in a colorful bubble world! It is more interesting and meaningful than a
word document or to do list.
