I. PAST TENSE Simple Past Tense is one of simple verb form which shows many things or accidents that happen in past. In this tense, adverb of time, such as yesterday, last night, etc. can be mentioned specifically. Past Tense has its own formula, that is: Forms Formula Examples Positive (+) S + Verb-2 (past tense) The teacher came S + be (was/were) I was a stamp collector Negative (-) S + did + not + Verb-1 (present tense) The teacher didnt come S + be (was/were) + not + adj. I wasnt a stamp collector Interrogative (?) Did + S + Verb-1 (present tense) + Interrogative mark (?) Did the teacher come? Be (was/were) + S + Interrogative mark (?) Was I a stamp collector?
II. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE Past Contionuous Tense is one of tenses which shows two accidents happen at the same time, but one of those accidents happens earlier than the other one. It can be mentioned that when the second accident happens, the first accident is still happening. The formulas for this tense are: 1. Positive forms Subject + To be (verb 2) + (Verb + ing) + Object 2. Negative forms Subject + To be (verb 2) + NOT + (Verb + ing) + Object 3. Interrogative forms: To be (verb 2) + Subject + (Verb + ing) + Object + ? Question Word + To be (verb 2) + Subject + (Verb + ing) + Object + ?
Function of Past Continuous Tense Sometimes, Past Continuous Tense is used for 2 parts in one sentence which both of them are happening at the same time. For example: While I was studying in one room of our apartment, my roomate was having a party in the other room. You were listening the radio when I came. When the teacher came, we were playing chess. Bina was sleeping when I visited him.
The examples for Past Continuous Tense: Forms Examples Positive (+) I was walking down the street when it began to rain. When i was in the park, the sun was shining. Negative (-) It was not raining when i went to the market last night. They were not playing football when you were not at home. Interrogative (?) Was he studying when I arrived at home? What was she doing with this document when all the staff went home?
III. FUTURE TENSE Future Tense or Simple Future Tense is a form that shows about something which will happen for the next time. The formula for Present Future Tense: a. Using Verb ( will / shall ) Forms Formula Examples Positive (+) Subject + WILL / SHALL + Verb 1 + Object She will go to Paris tomorrow. Negative (-) Subject + WILL / SHALL + NOT + Verb 1 + Object She will not (won't) go to Paris tomorrow. Interrogative (?) WILL / SHALL + Subject + Verb 1 + Object + ? Will she go to Paris tomorrow ? Question Word + WILL / SHALL + Subject + Verb 1 + ? When will she go to Paris? Who will come here?
b. Using non-verb ( will / shall ) Forms Formula Examples Positive (+) Subject + WILL / SHALL + be + Non Verb + Object He will be alone tomorrow. Negative (-) Subject + WILL / SHALL + NOT + be + Non Verb + Object He will not (won't) be alone tomorrow. Interrogative (?) WILL / SHALL + Subject + be + Non Verb + Object + ? Will he be alone tomorrow?
Question Word + WILL/SHALL + Subject + be + Non Verb + Object + ? When will he be in Las Vegas?
c. Using going to Forms Formula Examples Positive (+) Subject + To be + going to + Verb 1 + Object I am going to read a newspaper tomorrow. Negative (-) Subject + To be + NOT + going to + Verb 1 + Object I am not going to read a newspaper tomorrow Interrogative (?) To be + Subject + going to + Verb 1 + Object + ? Are you going to read a newspaper tomorrow? Question Word + To be + Subject + going to + verb 1 +? What are you going to read?
