Introduction

BLISCOFA, INC. is a registered community-based rural organization and

is formed for the purpose of improving the socio-economic situation of coconut farmers
in the town of Valencia, Negros Oriental. Later on, the organization diversified into the
manufacturing of fashion accessories derived from coconut shells, vinegar and virgin
coconut oil production. (http://pianegros.blogspot.com/2012_04_18_archive.html)
The first step in having this business is de-husking the coconut. This is the
process of removing the husk from the coconut. Since the shell of the coconut is hard
and not easy to break, the materials needed must be sharp enough to break the coconut
shell. The coconut is dehusked manually. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machete)
In BLISCOFA, INC., dehusking is done manually thats why they require skilled
workers. In any company, the safety of their workers is their first priority. They must
provide suits that can protect the workers from any harm and danger. Taking
everything into account, this study focuses on the safety of the workers from doing the
manual dehusking of coconuts.
Rationale of the Study
In BLISCOFA the farmers are using the traditional way of dehusking of coconuts. It
is done manually and it is very risky. The coconuts have hard cover shells that is very
hard to remove the shell that is why they use some sharp materials or spikes that makes
their work faster. The spike is metal like rod that is very sharp in the end it. So it is very
dangerous if the worker make a little mistake. That is why we conduct a study that aims
to identify how safety manual dehusking to workers in BLISCOFA, INC. (Barangay
Liptong Small Coconut Farmers Association, Inc.).
Theoretical Background of the Problem
Falls can be prevented when workers understand proper set-up and safe use of equipment,
so they need training on the specific equipment they will use to complete the job. Employers
must train workers in hazard recognition and in the care and safe use ladders, scaffolds, fall
protection systems, and other equipment they'll be using on the job.
OSHA has provided numerous materials and resources that employers can use during
toolbox talks to train workers on safe practices to avoid falls in construction. Falls from ladders,
scaffolds and roofs can be prevented and lives can be saved through three simple steps: Plan,
Provide and Train. ( https://www.osha.gov/stopfalls/index.html)
In this investigation, we report the results of 2 studies designed to (a) conduct
confirmatory factor analytic tests of a model of general safety performance with performance
ratings from 550 coworker appraisals and examine hypothesized relationships between
indicators of breadth and depth of knowledge constructs and confirmed safety performance
factors with training history data and supervisory appraisals for 133 hazardous waste workers in
23 jobs and 4 organizations. Confirmatory factor analytic results from Study 1 provided support
for a 4-factor model of general safety performance with performance factors labeled Using
Personal Protective Equipment, Engaging in Work Practices to Reduce Risk, Communicating
Health and Safety Information, and Exercising Employee Rights and Responsibilities. In
general, the results from Study 2 supported the hypothesized dominance of depth of knowledge
over breadth of knowledge in the prediction of performance with respect to more routine,
consistent safety tasks. Issues concerning the general-inability of these factors to other types of
work and the human resource management implications of these results are discussed.

Statement of the Problem
Now a days, there are lot of technologies that can help the people to decrease
human effort. The machines help us to make the work fast and no risk in the workers. It
also lessen the cost in human labor. But in BLISCOFA they still doing the traditional
way of dehusking which is needed more laborers and more safety requirements for
their workers. How safe does traditional way of dehusking to workers in BLISCOFA,
INC.?
Significance of the Study
The proposed study will determine the safety factors among the workers of
BLISCOFA, INC. The result of the study will make BLISCOFA, INC. be aware of the
safety of their workers. The researchers expect that through this study, the company
will develop strategic solutions regarding the safety of their workers if the researchers
will find out that most of the workers are prone to dangers.

Scope and Limitation
This research are the workers of BLISCOFA, INC. The limitations of this research
are only those who are assigned in the field of dehusking the coconuts. Determining
how skillful the workers do their jobs while securing the safety equipments they use.
Research Methodology
This research will employ a qualitative research design since this study aimed to
determine the safety of the workers. This research plans to interview the workers of the
BLISCOFA in order to gather the data needed.
