WAYNE TRACE LOCAL SCHOOLS - OCTOBER 2014 NEWSLETTER

SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE
By STEPHEN ARNOLD
Faculty, staff, and students at all three Wayne
Trace Local School buildings continue to work
hard everyday. Educating our youth is and
always will be a team effort, with continued cooperation and communication needed between
parents and school personnel. The more we stay
informed about our childrens education, the
more we can help pave the way to a successful
school experience. As Ive stated many times,
feel free to frequently communicate with your
child(ren)s teachers concerning educational and
co-curricular issues.
Fall is right around the corner, signifying the
beginning of shorter days and longer nights. As
we continue to make safety a high priority,
parents are encouraged to remind their studentdrivers to use the defensive approach when
operating a motor vehicle. As youre well aware
by now, texting while driving is a violation in the
state of Ohio, and drivers under the age of eighteen can be pulled over simply for this violation.
Parents are highly encouraged to remind their
student-drivers of the dangers involved in driving
at night or in the early morning, especially when
other young people are also in the vehicle. Texts
can and should wait. Everyone plays a part in
getting students to and from school safely.
In academic news, Wayne Trace Local Schools
showed improvement in some areas on the ODE
report card. Our performance index (PI) and four
-year graduation rate were up from a year ago.
Areas of concern continue to be closing the gap
between our highest & lowest students and
meeting the 80% passing rate on all statemandated tests. At Wayne Trace, we recognize
that we still have some challenges ahead of us
concerning the state report card, and we are
committed to meetings these challenges. We
have a very diverse student population with an
array of educational needs, and each one of our
students deserves the best education that we can
provide. As someone who cares deeply about
academic success, I can assure the WT community that I spend enough time visiting classrooms to know that teaching and learning are
taking place every day in all three Wayne Trace
school buildings.
Our teaching staff has several new teachers
this year. As part of being an entry-level teacher,
the Ohio Department of Education has outlined a
Teacher-Mentor Program. Experienced teachers work with inexperienced, developing teachers right in the classroom of the new teachers.
As part of this program, experienced teachers
may videotape the new teachers presenting a
lesson to students. Notice: If you do not want
your child to appear in any of these confidential
videos of new teachers, contact your child(ren)s
building principal(s) in writing, stating that you
do not want your child to appear in a video. If
we do not hear from you within a reasonable
amount of time, then we will consider it acceptable for your child(ren) to appear in these videos.
Please understand: These videos are completely
confidential, with the sole purpose of the videos
being to help inexperienced teachers improve,
not to record the behavior of the students.
The JH/HS students enjoyed another exciting
Homecoming week during the week of September 22-27. Many thanks go out to our HS student
council, under the direction of Mrs. Annette Sinn,
for coordinating many extra-curricular events
related to the annual Homecoming ceremony.
In school calendar news, please be reminded
that school will not be in session on Wednesday,
October 1 for the purpose of a full-day teacher
in-service. We anticipate that the in-service on
October 1 will be our final full-day in-service of
the 2014-2015 school year. However, we do
have two-hour delays planned for in-services on
October 15, November 19, January 21, February
18, and April 15. Buses will run two hours late on
each of these Wednesdays with school starting
two hours later than the normal start-time. We
appreciate the cooperation from our parents/
guardians as we use this time to conduct building
-level initiatives that will better prepare our
students for academic success.
Be sure to mark your calendars for Friday,
October 10 as we honorably enshrine the fifth
class into Wayne Trace Staff Hall of Fame. This
years inductees include Mr. Harold Sponseller
and Mr. Jim McElroy. The induction is set to
begin at 6:30 at the football field.
Finally, please be aware of our annual parentteacher conferences, scheduled for October 2930. But also be aware that you may schedule
times to meet with your child(ren)s teachers at
any time during the school year, not just during
the scheduled, annual conferences.
As always, if you have questions or concerns
about your childs educational experience at
Wayne Trace, feel free to contact your building
principal or superintendent.
Go Raiders!

Laurie DeLong, Director of Student Services

Special Education/Student Services
We would like to thank Cindy Wilson, Vice
President of Office Partners LLC for the donation
of office cubicles for use in several of our
resource rooms. We are fortunate to have a
community that supports Wayne Trace, and we
greatly appreciate this gift from Office Partners.
The next Early Childhood Screening will be
October 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the
Payne Elementary School. Children from birth to
age 5 can be screened in hearing, speech, vision,
and developmental areas. Appointments can be
scheduled by calling 1-877-473-8166 (after hours,
dial extension 41 to leave a message).
The Individuals with Disabilities Education
Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) requires states,
including Ohio to conduct determinations for all
districts that receive IDEA funds. Every year,
Wayne Trace receives a designation on the performance of our special education program. This
is known as the Special Education Determination.
This is based on a set of 20 data and performance
indicators. These indicators make up the Special
Education Profile (SPP) for our school.
Our 2013-2014 determination reflects data
from the 2012-2013 school year. Schools can get
one of four determinations -- Meets Requirements, Needs Assistance, Needs Intervention, or
Needs Substantial Intervention. Wayne Trace
achieved the Meets Requirements determination
with a perfect score.
In addition, there was an IDEA Audit, in which
there were no findings.
For questions about preschool, the special
education determination, or special education
topic or related services, you can contact me at
419-587-3414 (Grover Hill Office), or 419-3004711 (Western Buckeye Office), or at my email
address: delongl@wt.k12.oh.us
21st Century Community Learning
Western Buckeye Educational Service Center in
partnership with Wayne Trace Local Schools is
pleased to announce it was awarded a continuation grant for year three of our 21st Century
Community Learning Center. Our program will
continue to focus on increasing math and reading
achievement, enhancing positive youth development and encouraging parent and family engagement. The staff have been working diligently and
are looking forward to continuing a collaborative
relationship with administration and staff to
effectively serve the students at Wayne Trace Jr./
Sr. High School.
The program will be held from 2:45-4:45 p.m.,
Monday-Thursday. There is no cost to you for
this program. We are able to provide transportation back to the neighboring villages of Latty,
Payne, Haviland and Grover Hill.
If you any questions or would like an application for your child to enroll please contact Ashley
Shepherd at 419-399-4711 or email ashepherd@wb.noacsc.org.

MESSAGES FROM THE PRINCIPALS

WT PAYNE ELEMENTARY
Jody L. Dunham, Principal
Wow! Its hard to believe that the first nine
weeks of school will be completed on October
17. Staff and students have worked extremely
hard to meet all of the beginning of year state
requirements.
Our fall AIMSweb and ODE Diagnostic assessments have been completed. The data collected
from this process will guide specific targeted
instruction to meet the needs of all students. It
will also give us data for monitoring on-going
improvement of skills. Ohios new Third Grade
Reading Guarantee directs schools to identify
which students in kindergarten through grade
three are having trouble reading and then give
the students extra reading help right away. The
goal is to get these boys and girls caught up in
reading as soon as possible.
We look forward to a wide assortment of learning activities in October. The most important
activity will be the third grade students taking the
required fall administration of the reading
subtest for the Ohio Achievement Assessment on
Tuesday, October 7. The assessment will be
administered in the morning. Please plan doctor
and dentist appointments outside of the assessment time.
The sixth grade class will be heading to the
Pleasant Valley golf course on October 8. This
field trip will support the Fuel Up/Play 60
program. Physical education teacher Mrs. Mohr
and a golf professional at Pleasant Valley will
spend time instructing students about this lifelong sport. Other field trips will include the
preschool and kindergarten classes heading to
Lincoln Ridge to enjoy their fall displays.
Learning assemblies this month will be a
concert by Mustards Retreat on October 9. This
folk music group will be the opening act for Peter
Yarrow at the Van Wert NPAC that same evening.

On October 21, the third grade class will be

visited by the Kids on the Block program. This is
a program that teaches compassion for those
who have physical, mental and emotional challenges in life.
The kindergarten class will celebrate Grandparents Day on October 24. Grandparents are
invited for lunch and a classroom activity. Thank
you to all of our Grandparents who were able to
come and join us for our Grandparent Day on
September 26. It is always fun for the students
to have their Grandparents come to school.
The building-wide Halloween Parade will be at
1:30 on October 24. Please come and line the
streets of Payne to cheer the students on!
Finally, we look forward to our upcoming
Parent Teacher Conferences. Please mark your
calendar for 5:00-8:30 p.m. on October 29 and
1:00-8:00 p.m. on October 30. We value this
time of collaboration between teachers and families. Please watch for information to come home
with your child to schedule your conference.
WT GROVER HILL ELEMENTARY
Kevin Wilson, Principa
Since the first quarter ends on October 17, it
fits that we schedule a time for parents and
teachers to sit down and discuss student progress. Parent/Teacher conferences will be on
Wednesday, October 29, from 5:30 to 8:30 and
again on Thursday, October 30 from 1:00 to 8:00.
The WTGH goal for this year is 100% parent participation so we would like to encourage all parents to take some time to schedule a conference.
The month of October also indicated the beginning of the state assessments. This year the only
OAA given is the Reading OAA for third graders.
The third-grade class will take the Reading OAA
test on October 7. There has been a change in
the state assessment schedule. This year those
students who received a score of 400 on this OAA
Reading will not take the spring Reading OAA,
but instead they will take the PARCC assessments
in Reading in the spring. There are other changes
to the spring testing schedule that will be
explained in future Newsletters.
The PTO fundraiser was very successful again
this year. The PTO uses the funds raised during
this fundraiser to pay for assemblies, field trips,
and many other items for the Grover Hill
students. At this time, the staff and I would like
to take this time to THANK the PTO for all that
they do for WTGH students and staff. Also, on
behalf of the PTO, I would like to thank the
WTGH community members for their support.
WT JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL
Greg Leeth, Principal
We are over half way through the first grading
period at the junior/senior high school, and
students and teachers are adapting well to the
implementation of laptop computers for delivering instruction and assessing student learning.
Recently, I informally polled an English class
about the use of their laptops. Students in the
class claimed to be using their computers to complete 75% of their homework. The benefits they
spoke of include the ease of use and the efficiency the laptop provides to complete assignments. I am excited to see students developing
real 21st century skills that will serve them well
after the graduate from high school.
Please be reminded that the laptop computers
are school issued and must be well cared for.
Four students have had cracked screens replaced
on their laptops. Screens will crack if students
close the laptop lid when objects are on the keyboard. Students should be careful not to close
lids on earbuds or headphones and should not
stuff papers under the lid of the laptop.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held
October 29th and 30th. Please be sure to take
advantage of this scheduled time by scheduling
conferences with your childs teachers. Of
course, I always encourage parents and teachers
to communicate with each other throughout the
school year, dont hesitate to call or email your
childs teacher if you have questions or concerns.
Juniors who are interested in taking the PSAT, a
standardized test cosponsored by the College
Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, should contact the guidance counselors
office to sign up. The test, which provides students scholarship opportunities and provides
feedback on college readiness, costs $14 and will
be administered on October 15th.
The fall testing window for junior and senior
students who have not passed one or more
sections of the OGT begins October 27. Current
10th-12th graders must pass all five sections of the
test to graduate from high school. Students who
do not pass the fall test will have additional
opportunities to take the test in the spring and
summer.
Lastly, I want to thank the community for the
tremendously positive start to the school year.
We have much to be proud of at Wayne Trace
Local Schools, and you are an integral part of our
success!

Music Department News

Thanks to everyone who supported our bands

and choirs during our recent fundraiser. We
appreciate the generosity of our community!
INSTRUMENTS NEEDED!
If you have an instrument sitting in your closet
collecting dust, we would like to encourage you
to donate it to the HS Music Department or bring
it in to see if we can work out a purchase deal. It
is our desire to get instruments into the hands of
any 5th grade students wishing to be in band, or
anyone else who needs an instrument. If you
have an instrument you think we could use,
please give us a call!
2nd Annual Fine Arts Festival
We are excited to again bring an evening of
food, music and art to everyone! Mark your
calendar for Saturday, November 8th! We will
offer the soup, appetizer and dessert buffet at
5:30 and concert at 7:00. Tickets are $10 for
supper and concert, or $5 for the concert only.
All tickets for the supper are presale only and will
be available starting October 20th from the music
department or any HS band student.
Athletic Department News
In an effort to make the evening more special
for our seniors Parents Night has been changed
to Senior Night. We will honor our senior football, cheerleaders, band, golf, and cross country
athletes and parents on Friday, October 24,
during the home football game with
Tinora. Volleyball Senior Night will be on
Monday, October 6, at the home game with
Delphos Jefferson. Letters will be sent home

Paulding County Progress-Weekly Reminder - 5

ANTWERP LOCAL SCHOOLS

October 2014 Newsletter
SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE
The start of the school year has been very busy,
with many activities throughout the district. I
hope you have had the opportunity to attend one
of the extracurricular events this fall. Did you
know that residents of our school district who are
at least 65 years old are eligible for a free allsports pass? This is one of the many ways we
thank our senior residents for their support of our
school system. If you have not received a pass
yet, see Mr. Altimus in the Athletic Directors
office. He is usually available from 12:00-2:00
each afternoon. The pass is good for admission
to all home junior high and high school athletic
events. We will also be thanking our Senior Citizens in December with a Breakfast on December
11. Mark your calendar and check the November
newsletter for more details and reservation information.
The circle drive for student drop-off and pick-up
has been congested at times, but we can make it
better with your help. Please follow the directions of the aides supervising the circle drive and
pull ahead as far as possible prior to letting your
child out of the vehicle or picking up your child.
Using the entire circle drive will allow us to unload and load children more efficiently. If possible, have your child get in and out of the car on
the sidewalk side. I have noticed some parents
dropping students off or picking them up in the
parking lot instead of the circle drive. If you do
not use the circle drive, please park your car and
come up on the sidewalk with your child in the
morning or to meet them at the sidewalk in the
afternoon. Elementary students are not allowed
to walk through the parking lot by themselves to
get into a waiting car. The police have informed
us that they will be ticketing cars parked or pulling into the designated handicapped spaces to
drop off students, if the vehicle does not have the
proper permit. I urge all parents to use the circle
drive for drop-off and pick-up. The extra time it
takes to wait in the circle drive is worth the safety
of our children.
Our first quarter will be ending on October 17. I
encourage all parents or guardians to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences. This year we will be
having Parent-Teacher Conferences on October
28 and November 4 from 4:00-7:30. We will
also be having conferences in the spring. Communication between school and home is vital for
the success of our students.
If you would like to receive this newsletter and
the menu by email, you may sign up electronically by sending an email to the following address:
newsletter-subscribe@antwerpschools.org. Your
email should be blank; no message is necessary.
You will get a reply with simple instructions to
complete your registration.
