Erie Middle School, Pre AP Focus School
Todd Bissell, Principal
Dr. Rachel Heide, Assistant Principal

Dear SVVSD Parents and Guardians:
The Colorado Department of Education has identified Wednesday,
October 1 as the official statewide October Count Day for the 2014-
2015 school year. To comply with this state mandate and ensure maxi-
mum attendance, St. Vrain Valley Schools will have a full day of school
with a normal start time on Wednesday, October 1 in place of the pre-
viously scheduled late start time.
Please make every effort to have your student arrive to school at the
normal start time on Wednesday, October 1. Your assistance in this
important state requirement is greatly appreciated as state funding for
St. Vrain Schools is directly impacted by the October 1 attendance
numbers. For more information, please contact the school office.
Thank you again for your ongoing support for our students and
schools.

A Note From the Health Clerks Desk

Just a reminder that when students are feeling ill or are injured, we would like them to stop by
the Health Office before texting or calling to go home. Thank you in advance for your
assistance in this matter.

Child Health Day
Monday, October 6th, 2014

On Child Health Day, the emphasis is to help raise an awareness and a commitment
to teaching children the benefits of good health and teaching parents how they can help
and protect their children with good nutrition, year round fitness and exercise.
The day was proclamated in 1928 by Calvin Coolidge to increase awareness of health
issues facing the children in the U.S. including health issues, healthy eating, fitness,
child's development, immunizations, preventing injuries, and more.
Box Tops Contest as easy as 1, 2, 3!
For a chance to win an AMC gift card just follow these three steps: Clip your Box Tops, attach
box tops to the attached collection sheet, and turn completed collection sheets in at the front
office by 10/25!
COUNSELING CORNER

I dont have any homework tonight. Sound familiar? Many middle school students say this to their
parents in hopes of spending their evening playing video games or talking on the phone.

Recent studies have shown that childrens success in school depends as much on their parents as on their
teachers. As a parent you are their most important teacher. As they grow your children constantly look up to
you as a role model and for guidance. Your role as a teacher should never end especially when they enter
school.

Some parents have made this rule: Theres no such thing as no homework. If there truly isnt an
assignment from school, these parents create one. Some parents ask their student to do some research on a
topic of interest. Then, have him or her report back one thing they have learned. Others ask their student to
read or journal for an hour before commencing with play time. Parents have found that when their student
understands that they mean business, their student often remembers that he or she does have some homework
after all.
Parent tips to help their students:
-Help your student develop goals
-Be available to aid them when they need your help
-Advise them and give them your support
-Praise your children when they have done something well
-Help them visualize success and acknowledge their progress

Counseling News

The week of Oct. 27th is Red Ribbon week. This is a great time for students and parents to pledge
themselves to a drug/alcohol/tobacco free life style. Red Ribbon Celebration brings millions of people
together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention,
early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign
observed annually in the United States.

Sixth Grade
Lillian Christensen is a good example of what it looks like to ROAR in 6th grade. Her teachers
appreciate her hard work and leadership qualities in the classroom. Lillian is a student who is on task
and also finding time to be kind and helpful to others.

Owen TeVelde pushes himself to do quality work in all his classes. He is a quiet leader who shows
others how to be a successful 6th grade student. Keep up the good work, Owen!

Seventh Grade
Nyah Sanchez ROARS at Erie Middle School. Nyah works hard, stays organized, and is respectful to
her teachers. She also exhibits kindness and compassion to her Tiger classmates. Keep being
awesome, Nyah!
Gavin Mendoza is the 7th grade boy student of the month. This year, Gavin showed up to school on
Day 1 ready to learn and be involved at EMS. From the get-go, he has been nothing but a positive
team player! Gavin brings his best ideas and efforts to class, always adding his thoughts in a
respectful manner, helping others with plenty of contagious enthusiasm. He takes his responsibility as
a student and class member seriously and is a solid role model for others to look to. Way to go,
Gavin!

Eighth Grade
Alex Nielsen has consistently demonstrated excellence in the classroom. His diligence, attention to
detail, and strong work ethic are recognized by his classmates, and appreciated by his teachers. He is
polite, attentive, and always prepared to do his best in class. We thoroughly enjoy having Alex as a
student here at Erie Middle; great job, Alex!
Alison McNeal is an outstanding representative for student of the month. Alison produces quality
work and expects only the best from herself. Alison is on task, gives her best effort consistently, and is
always willing to help others. Alison has a smile on her face throughout school days and comes in to
class with a positive attitude ready to go. Alison is a student who personifies ROARing at Erie Middle
School and leads by example. Congratulations Alison - well done!!

These students will have their picture displayed in the main office and receive a large one topping pizza for
lunch the last Friday of the month.
