Sentence Structure
Transforming armative statements into negative statements,
positive questions and negative questions is a very systematic process.
entences are used for many purposes. They
S
may tell that something is the case about
somebody or something. They may as well say
that something is not the case with somebody. They
may ask a question (seek information) about
something, and that too in a positive way or in a
negative way. For example:
Mustafa is a doctor.
Mustafa is not a doctor.
Is Mustafa a doctor?
Is Mustafa not a doctor?
Sara takes tea in the evening.
Sara does not take tea in the evening.
Does Sara take tea in the evening?
Does Sara not take tea in the evening?
(i) of both the examples are armative statements.
(ii) of both the examples are negative statements (i.e. they
negate being doctor and taking tea of the subjects Mustafa
and Sara.)
(iii) of both the examples are positive questions (i.e. they ask
if something is true about the subjects)
(iv) of both the examples are negative questions (i.e. they
ask if something is not the case about the subjects.

Auxiliary Verbs
are used to make
negative statements and
questions.
Some commonly used auxiliary verbs
are BE (is/am/are/was/were);
HAS/HAVE; DO/DOES
and WILL/WOULD
NEGATIVE STATEMENT
Negative statements are formed by adding not after the
auxiliary verb. For Example (in X is Y sentences):
Musa is a god student. Musa is not a good student.
NOTE: We do not need to provide an auxiliary because it is
already there.
But, if the auxiliary is not present (SVO: Simple Present and
Simple Past), we have to provide an auxiliary before the
main verb. (We can only provide DO/DOES). For
Example:
Raza eats apples. Raza does not eat apples.
POSITIVE QUESTIONS
Positive questions (YES-NO) are formed from the positive
statement by shifting the auxiliary to the start. For example:
Musa is a god student. Is Musa a good student?
NOTE: We do not need to provide an auxiliary because it is
already there.
But, if the auxiliary is not present (SVO: Simple Present and
Simple Past), we have to provide an auxiliary in the start of
the sentence (We can only provide DO/DOES). For
Example:
Raza eats apples. Does Raza eat apples?
NEGATIVE QUESTIONS
Negative questions (YES-NO) are formed from the
negative statement by shifting the auxiliary to the
start. For example:
Musa is not a god student. Is Musa not a good student?
NOTE: We do not need to provide an auxiliary because it is
already there.
But, if the auxiliary is not present (SVO: Simple Present and
Simple Past), we have to provide an auxiliary in the start of
the sentence (We can only provide DO/DOES). For Example:
Raza does not eat apples. Does Raza not eat apples?
WH-QUESTIONS
WH-questions are formed from the YES-NO
questions by adding the WH-question word before
the YES-NO question.
Is he in the room? Where is he?
NOTE: WH-word eliminates the information it seeks (in the
room in the above example): It would be absurd to ask
Where is he in the room?
