MOTI F XF V 1. 50 =
GUI TAR SOUNDS
USI NG AMP-MODELI NG
PART 3 = RECORDI NG TO EXI STI NG BACKI NG TRACKS
The previous episodes of this workshop
focused on the use of the new Guitar Efx
insert effects (which are introduced with
the MOTIF XF firmware version 1.50) in
Performances and in the Song Mixing
mode. Moreover, the recording of backing
tracks for guitar using the Performance
Recording function was described.
This third and final episode finally describes, how the
Integrated Sampling mode is used to record the guitar
to audio tracks alongside the existing backing tracks, so
that backing tracks (MIDI) and guitar tracks (Audio) are
combined to a song.
By the way: On the occasion of the firmware update
to version 1.5 (which features the new guitar effects)
the electric guitar is the focus of this three-part series.
However, the technical process of the Integrated Sampling,
the recording of the audio input signal in the song context,
is also applicable to other instruments or vocals. So do not
pass up the know-how of this series, even if you are not
particularly interested in guitars.
YAMAHA.COM 4
MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE 06|2014
Even MOTIF XS users can benefit partially from the know-
how of this episode - whether with or without interest in
guitar sounds. While the MOTIF XS does not have the
new guitar effects, AmpSim or distortion effects can
alternatively be used for a connected electric guitar.
And the process of the sampling is applicable to other
instruments or vocals.
I NTEGRATED SAMPLI NG
Integrated Sampling is one of the most important
features of the MOTIF XF and means that samples can
directly and immediately be integrated in all modes.
Immediately after the sampling procedure, the sample is
playable in the desired mode, without having to program
Waveforms, Voices, or Performances. In the MOTIF XF the
Integrated Sampling mode is is a sub-mode of the Voice /
Performance / Song / Pattern modes.
Among others Integrated Sampling offers the opportunity
to play another instrument (eg guitar) to a pre-recorded
playback or backing track and record its audio signal
directly into a sequencer track as a sample.
This is a similar process as recording to an audio track
of a sequencer software ("Digital Audio Workstation").
However, on the MOTIF XF there is an important difference:
The audio recording is not directly written to the track, but
handled as a Sample Voice that is automatically assigned
to the selected track. Sample Voices are - like the other
Voices - controlled by MIDI note events. These MIDI notes
are - also automatically - generated during recording.
So, as a result you can use the same approach as in a
recording with an audio sequencer. Only the playback
and management of the generated sample file in the form
of a Sample Voice is different.
The Sample Voices are assigned to the track of a Song or
Pattern right before the recording and are usable in this
track immediately after the recording process without any
additional settings.
The Mixing settings are made automatically, too. The track
can be played back immediately after the recording.
Tracks that includie Sample Voices are called "Audio
Tracks" and are marked with a wave symbol. Unlike
conventional audio tracks, these tracks can be edited in
the MOTIF XF with extensive sound parameters, or are
even handled like a Mix Voice.
SETTI NG UP THE A/D PART
Before you start recording guitars in the Integrated
Sampling mode, you should double-check whether the
settings of the A/D Part, that were described in detail in the
last episode, are done or not. Here's a brief summarisation
of the most important things:
If you want to use the Insert Effects of the A/D Part in the
Song or Pattern mode, you first have to enable it in the
Insertion Switch display. This is true even if the settings of
the A/D Part were transferred to the Song Mixing by using
the Performance Recording function.
In a new Song, the maximum number of eight Insert
Effects are initially activated for the Parts 1 - 8. So you
need to disable the Insert Effect for one of those eight
Parts in order to enable it for the A/D Part.

end of the Category list.
RECORDI NG FROM THE A/D
I NPUT I N THE SONG MODE
Here is a step by step description of the recording from the
audio input in a Song context.
It is irrelevant whether you record a guitar, another
instrument, or a microphone.
Select a Song in which you have recorded a backing
track with Performance Recording
Activate the Insert Effect for the A/D Part (see above)
Select track 5 for recording your guitar. The first four
tracks are already occupied by the music from the
Performance Recording session
Press INTEGRATED SAMPLING - F6 Rec
Set "Sample + note" as the Recording Type. The required
Input Source "A/D Input" is already selected
Confirm the settings with SF1 Confirm
Press F5 Start. The message "WAITING"
is displayed
Start the Song with the PLAY button
At the beginning of the third bar the message
"RECORDING" appears on the display. Now start
playing the guitar

Press F6 Standby
Check the input level indicated in the display. You may
need to readjust the GAIN control. If the signal is weak
or dull, it may be that the Insertion Switch of the A/D
Part is not enabled (see above)
Select the Trigger Mode meas
Use the parameter "Punch In/Out" to set the desired
recording section, for example 001 - 017 for a 16-bar

After bar 16 the message "Executing ..." appears briefly
in the display, followed by "FINISHED". The recording is
automatically terminated
Press SONG - EDIT. You will see that a program
change (PC) and a C3 note, extending over 16 bars,
was created to trigger the Sample Voice
In Part 5 of the Song Mixing, the name of the new
Sample Voice is shown, for example, "Waveform USR
0001"
If you do not like the recording, you can execute SONG

Press ENTER to confirm the recording
Press EXIT to exit the recording mode. In the SAMPLE
Select display the new recording is displayed at the top
as "New Waveform ... "
Press F3 Normalize and confirm with SF4 Apply.
The level of the recording is thus raised to an optimum
level
Confirm with ENTER and then press EXIT
Press SONG and reset the sequencer to
the starting position
Start the Song by pressing the PLAY button and
listen to your guitar recording together with the
backing track
MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE 06|2014
YAMAHA.COM 7
The Sample Voice assigned to Part 5 is deleted if the
corresponding option is selected, but not the Waveform.
That can be done in the Integrated Sampling mode
using the JOB - F2 Waveform - 02 Delete
You can add even more recordings to the first recording
in other sections of the same track. Each time you record,
a new Sample Voice is generated. In the track a program
change is inserted at the beginning of the recording,
followed by the trigger note that starts the sample.
After you have finished your recordings, you have to
store the sequence and mix data in the Song with SONG
STORE.
Then a backup with the File Type "all" or "all-song" onto a
USB device is required.
RECORDI NG WI TH OR
WI THOUT EFFECTS?
When recording from the A/D input according to the
above description, the recorded signal is processed by the
Insertion Effects. After the recording the Insert Effects for
the A/D Part are no longer active for the recorded track,
since these only affect the input signal of the A/D input.
The Guitar Efx's are already incorporated in the audio
recording.
If you or your guitarist want to have a reverb or delay
effect in addition to the Guitar Efx while recording, you
can set this in the Insert Effect B ("Ins B") of the A/D
Part. This is then, however, also included in the recorded
signal. Usually it is advisable to use System Effects such
as chorus, delay, or reverb only on the playback of the
recorded tracks.
The following alternative recording process is also
conceivable:
Record the A/D Part without any Insert Effects. Simply
record the pure, unamplified guitar signal. Only after the
recording to the audio track the Guitar Efx is assigned as
an Insert Effect to that track.
For this purpose select the appropriate Mix Part and press
"F6 - VceConv". Press ENTER to save a new Mix Voice.
You can then edit the Mix Voice containing the recorded
sample of the guitar by selecting "F6 VceEdit" and adjust -
among other things - the Insert Effects, if "Insertion Switch"
is set to ON for that track.
The advantage is that the Guitar Efx remain flexible. You
can test several settings in the song context. However, the
clear disadvantage is that only the pure guitar signal is
heard while recording, what is perhaps less inspiring for
playing guitar.
THE END
Thus, our three-part workshop comes to an end.
We hope you had fun and a boost for your creativity.
If you can show own results now - backings with guitar
recordings -, feel free to send us a link. We would definitely
like to check it out!

A wireless adapter called UD-WL01 is
recently available from Yamaha. This
allows the MOTF XF to be integrated into a
wireless network.
The firmware (OS) version 1.20 is required for the
MOTIF XF to be able to connect to a wireless network.
The current OS 1.50, however, is highly recommended
of course, since it includes new effects algorithms. We
have widely reported about that firmware in the Music
Production Guide 01-2014.
The integration of a MOTIF XF in a network gives very
diverse opportunities. Essentially, four applications are
possible:
A computer can directly access a disk that is connected
to the MOTIF
The MOTIF File mode can directly access the hard disk
of a computer
MIDI data exchange with a computer over the network
Working with iPad apps
For the first three variants the "Infrastructure Mode"
and good to very good networking skills are required.
Moreover, the structure of each individually designed
network is to be considered. A detailed description would
be too extensive for this workshop. Therefore, I will only
dicuss the direct "Ad Hoc" connection between the MOTIF
and an iPad.
Due to the "40th Anniversary Yamaha Synthesizer" the
following apps are available for free since July ,17th 2014:
Cloud Audio Recorder for MOTIF XF
Multi Editor Essential
Performance Editor Essential
Voice Editor Essential
Faders & XY Pad
Set List Organizer
So for many users it becomes more interesting to consider
a wireless connection between the MOTIF XF and an iPad.

worth considering to save multiple ALL files with your own
network settings, if you regularly work with networking.
ON THE OTHER
SI DE OF
THE NET
On the iPad there are also some
settings required to connect it to the MOTIF. Please
open the program "Settings", select [WiFi], and start the
connection by tapping on the entry "MOTIF_XF ...".
Now start the app that you want to work with (in my
example "Multi Editor Essential"). Again, small adjustments
to the connection configuration are required. Please tap
on the gear symbol in the top right of the display to enter
the settings menu.
The further steps and settings are as follows:
MIDI Type: wireless
Model Select: MOTIF XF...
Wireless MIDI Port: MOTIF XF
If the pairing is successful, a hook will appear right next
to the Port name and the MIDI IN LED at the top right of
the screen begins to flash green. You can now begin the
actual work in the app. If you want to work with multiple
apps and already have configured the connection settings
in each of them, you can simply toggle between apps. The
Wi-Fi connection is automatically established whenever
the app is started. Here's a tip for a fast switching
between applications: By doing a "double click" on the
home button, you get an overview of all the apps that are
currently used and standby in the background. The last
used application is always on the far left. So you can use
the doubleclick and the selection of the icons to toggle
very quickly between two or more programs.
Another tip at the end: You can also use a USB hub (USB
signal distributor) to eg access a USB disk in addition to
the UD-WL01.
Have fun with the new UD-WL01 and always an
uninterrupted wireless connection.

YAMAHA DTX
E-DRUM WORKSHOP
DTX562K & GARAGE BAND I PAD APP
In this workshop I would like to show you
how to connect your e-drum module with
an iPad via USB cable to control the app
"GarageBand". This results in many new
amazing ways to use e-drums.
THE APP
Those who own a Mac certainly know the software
"GarageBand". There is also a great app version for iOS,
which can easily be downloaded and installed from the
App Store. When you start the app you can choose a
instrument. Since I choose Drums a "Classic Studio Kit" is
displayed for me.
MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE 06|2014
YAMAHA.COM 14
CONNECTI ON TO THE
MODULE
The DTX502 module features a USB port. To connect the
module with an iPad you could be using a Yamaha iUX
cable or an Apple "Camera Connection Kit".
CHANGI NG THE NOTE
NUMBERS
First, I choose a User Kit and store it under the name
"Garage Band".
Then I press the buttons Shift and Menu simultaneously
to enter the main menu. Using the dial I select the second
menu "Kit Voice" and press the right cursor button nine
times. Here, the note number is shown. If I hit a Zone or
a Pad, I am able to directly change its note number. So
So I connect both devices with a cable of my choice and
connect a pair of headphones to the iPad, because I really
like to hear the sounds of the app.
THE MI DI MAP
When I hit the Pads now, some of them or some of their
Zones don' t trigger a sound. This is quite normal and is
related to the so-called MIDI Map. This map is slightly
different for each drum manufacturer - but the app can
not know which e-drum is connected. Each Pad/Zone is
assigned to a MIDI note number, and our task now is to
adjust them manually and store the result. That's easy and
can be saved for each User Kit.
for example I hit the tom Pad 2 and set the number to 45.
Instantly the app triggers its sound for tom 2. Since the
crash and ride cymbals feature three Zones, you have to
make some changes here, too. But you are totally free with
you assignments, so it's your choice what kind of sound
you prefer.
For the snare, tom 1, bass drum, and some cymbal Zones
the settings fit already. I have made the following changes:
Tom 2 note number 45
Tom 3 note number 41
Ride Edge Zone note number 51
Open Hi-Hat all note numbers to 46
Closed Hi-Hat all note numbers to 42
Crash all note numbers to 49
TI P: DON' T FORGET TO STORE YOUR EDI TS! !

YAMAHA.COM 15
PLAYI NG AND RECORDI NG
A DRUM TRACK
Now that you've made all the settings the kit plays great.
When you tap on "Classic Studio Kit", you can purchase
new kits for a few bucks. I did that and can now select
the "Live Rock Kit". In the top bar of the app there are
buttons for record, stop and alike. Tap on record and after
a count-in you can record eight bars. This works perfectly
well. Stop to play after the eight bars, for your recording is
then played back in a loop.
CONCLUSI ON
The MIDI Map can be changed on all Yamaha electronic
drum modules. Therefore, you always have the option to
set them accurately to various apps and music programs.
"GarageBand" really is a lot of fun, and you can easily
record your own drum tracks.
Check it out for yourself!
Until next workshop
Your Ralf Mersch
When you tap on the multitrack view button, the app
displays an overview of the recorded tracks. You can add
more tracks with other instruments. Doing so you can
create a complete song.
MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE 06|2014
YAMAHA.COM 16
In the autumn of this year, Apple will
release the operating system 10.10 with
the name "Yosemite". For several years
now, various Yamaha instruments have a
version of Cubase AI included. The software
producer, Steinberg Media Technologies
GmbH, has detected a problem with the
installer of the software while testing it
with the beta version of the new Apple
operating system. We would like to address
the very laudable information policy and
also set you in knowledge on the current
status as part of our Music Production
Guide.
The identified problem actually does not relate to the
software itself, but the installation program. So, for
example, already installed software is not affected.
Experienced Mac users know the options available for the
update of an operating system. During an upgrade the
new operating system is installed over the existing one.
The advantage is that installed software, various system
settings, and user configurations are unchanged. You can
immediately continue to work in a familiar environment
after the upgrade. In this case there is no problem with
Steinberg software that was already installed before the
sytem update.
If this update procedure, however, is carried out over
several years and versions, even a Mac will develop an
increasingly slower operating system due to accumulated
"baggage". It may well be useful to occasionally make a
complete reinstall. But: Then all user settings have to be
re-configured and all the software must be reinstalled.
In this case, it is not possible to install, for example,
your existing version of Cubase from the supplied DVD.
However, Steinberg has already released a small software
tool that fixes the problem with the installer on an interim
basis.
With this tool and its accompanying information you are
able to install your existing Steinberg software on a freshly
installed operating system Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite.
The current software portfolio in the Steinberg shop is
changed gradually to the new installer version. For the
currently available Yamaha synthesizers it can certainly
take some time to have the newest installation DVDs
included with the instruments. The official opinion of
Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH, which itself contains
a direct link to the software tool, is available here:
ht t p://www. st ei nber g. net/en/newsandevent s/
news/newsdetail/article/official-letter-on-yosemite-
update-2837.html
Last but not least, some recommendations from practice.
If you want or need to rely on a working production
environment, it is highly advisable to actually update
an operating system only if the respective software
manufacturers announce compatibility with the current
version. This policy can save you some depressive hours.
Especially on a Mac, it is also very easy to set up a partition
on the hard drive with a fresh operating system. In this
system you have the possibility to install your existing
software on a test basis or successively move to the new
system according to the compatibility of your software.
The existing system environment serves as a working basis
and may be used in parallel over a longer period of time
- until the last program is stable on the new operating
system. It's only a matter of two mouse clicks in the Mac
System Preferences to select which system partition the
computer should start from.

DTX-MULTI 12 SOUNDSET:
ORI ENTAL PERCUSSI ON
The DTX Electronic Percussion Pad MULTI-12 uses many of the high-end features and sounds
from the DTX and MOTIF series and provides an optimum tool for live drumming, productions
or rehearsals.
With over 1,200 high-class sounds - including newly-developed drum, percussion and keyboard sounds - the DTX-12 MULTI
enriches any musical situation. Up to 200 User Sets can be programmed and added with effects to get ready for every
conceivable musical style with the best sounds around. In addition, the large 64MB Flash-ROM Wave-Memory can be filled
with additional samples which then can be assigned to the Pads.
Now the soundset Oriental Percussion for the DTX-MULTI 12 is available for registered users. It is provided by EASY
SOUNDS on behalf of Yamaha Music Europe - free of charge.
The download package includes the following:
50 Patterns
24 Kits
132 User Waves (18 MB Samples)
The soundset has been designed primarily for traditional and modern Turkish music. Its based on authentic samples of
oriental percussion instruments.
The oriental instruments are however well suited for use in other music styles such as Pop, World, Chill Out, Ambient, etc.
Oriental Percussion was programmed by the Turkish musician and producer Mert Topel.
Since 1990 Mert Topel is working as a musician with nationally and internationally known pop and rock stars such as
Tarkan (1993-2008) and many others. Mert recorded several albums as a producer of jazz, fusion, rock bands, and singers
like Kirac, Mor ve Otesi, Glden Goksen, Grizu etc. He also has his own jazz-rock band Fenomen, which published its
first album in 2006 - with very good response from jazz lovers. Another project is a collaboration with Alper Maral in the
production of an electro-acoustic-oriented album called The Voltage Control Project, which appeared in 2010.
The DTX-12 MULTI Patterns produced by Mert Topel should inspire the musician in the first place and serve as basis for his
own music productions.
This free soundset can be requested by sending an e-mail containing the keyword DTX-M12 Oriental to:
