Why adopt a school, you

Local Government leading the Way
What can we say, the local
Government on koh samui
are in fast track mode, to
establish and create a
Greener koh samui for all to
benefit from.
Check dams, tree planting,
flood drains, beach clean ups
and support for the various
organizations on koh samui is
growing from strength to
strength from the Tessban,
They will establish a first on
Samui their own recycling
centre right at their doors

Reef Watch May 2009
GIDOA members recently did a Reef Survey on
Chaweng Reef to monitor the condition of the
coral and the amount of marine life. We did the
survey using the Green Fins Reef Watch project
guidelines. We were looking at:
Reef type:
 whether it is dense coral, patchy or a
rocky reef.
 The Percentage cover of live hard
coral, dead coral rock, soft coral or
sea fan
 Coral types: boulder corals, branching
corals, or any other kinds
 Amount of certain types of Ma-
rine life that indicate the
healthiness of the reef
 Causes of any damage to the
reef: nets, fishing gear, spear
fishing, diving, shell collecting,
stepping/holding on corals, oil
slick, anchor on coral, sediment,
sewage
 Visibility, temperature of water
and sea flow.
We also use color charts to establish
coral healthiness.
The survey on Chaweng reef showed
that the majority of the reef is made
up of live hard coral which are in a
fairly good condition.
Although not in big numbers, the reef
fish that were there indicated that
there is plenty of life on the reef for
them to stay.
One thing that was very obvious was
that most of the damage was caused
by extensive sediment covering the
reef, and there were also signs of
damage caused by people stepping
or holding onto the reef.

Samui Regatta, THA & Blue water school hit the beaches
In conjunction with the Samui
regatta on 4th June, Bluewa-
ter International school set up
a major beach clean up on
Bangrak beach.
Yes once again this beach
has been cleaned four times
this year, this shows you the
amount of garbage we all
leave behind.
Over 200 participants came
along, the yaughties, THA
members, local community,
school children, samui rescue,
