Topic: Multiplying Decimals Grade Level: 6th

Goals/Focus: The focus of this lesson is to review the concept of multiplication of decimals. Also to assess how students work through
multiplication problems, and explain the steps they took verbally. Lastly, a goal is to be able to use mathematical terms.

______Concept Development ______Solidify ___X____ Practice (check one).

State Core/Standard:

Standard 1: Students will expand number sense to include operations with rational numbers.

Objective 6: Demonstrate proficiency with the four operations, with positive rational numbers, and with addition and subtraction of integers.

a. Multiply and divide a multi-digit number by a two-digit number, including decimals.

What questions will I ask?

Task How will I assess?
I will remind students of the
expectations. Including talking,
making sure to be listening.

Today we are going to be going to the movies. We are going to be using Multiplication and I will be walking around watching the
division of decimals to figure out problems and help us review for the test. So we decided to different students to see how they
go to a matinee movie since they are cheaper. So you are going with 4 other friends, so there solve this problem.

all of you to get into the movies.

Students will individually solve the above problem. Once the students have solved the I will be listening to the pairs as they

As a class we will be focusing on the process of the way the problems are set up and how they

understanding the concept and see
their work.
Is there another way you can solve if they make connections or if they

What mathematical issue will we discuss as a whole group / what generalization do I hope they make?:
We will discuss the way that you need to set up problems that include decimals; we will also go over the definitions and the parts of the
problem.

Exit Slip (one or two questions to assess what students took to independence): The students will have to figure out how much it
would cost to purchase 1 jumbo popcorn, 2 large drinks, and 1 candy. Then they will figure out how much the snacks cost per person.
They will turn this in at the end of class so that I can check if they understand the concepts.
