FANTASY INDEX REDRAFTER
ABOUT THIS PRODUCT:
This Fantasy Index Redrafter contains
rankings based on each players value for
the remainder of the season as if you
were to re-draft from scratch. The Redrafter
is published each Tuesday through the end
of November. We have a brief capsule for
each team. The detailed analysis of each
game (after weve looked at the matchup
more closely) follows in the Fantasy Index
Weekly, published on Wednesday. Thats the
product where the lists of players are based
strictly on how we feel they will perform this
week. Those rankings are adjusted and re-
published on Friday afternoon, after teams
have completed their practices and released
their injury listing.
BIGGEST MOVERS UP:
Donald Brown, Khiry Robinson, Knile Davis,
Davante Adams, Sammy Watkins, Darren
Sproles.
BIGGEST MOVERS DOWN:
Jamaal Charles, Ryan Mathews, Allen Hurns,
Marcedes Lewis, Mark Ingram, Robert Griffin
III, Tavon Austin, Shonn Greene, Riley
Cooper.
ARIZONA:
Carson Palmer was a late scratch on
Sunday. He likely will return for whats sizing
up to be a mega-showdown with the 49ers,
but its not certain. Palmer says doctors
have given him no timetable for how long it
will take a nerve problem in his shoulder to
resolve itself. If healthy, Palmer should be
good. San Franciscos defense isnt what it
used to be, and even last year Palmer had
some success against them (407 and 298
yards in the two games, with 2 TDs each
time).
ATLANTA:
The Falcons have a favorable matchup this
week: home against Tampa Bay. The Bucs
have played credible defense in their first
two games, but both opponents have been
led by backup quarterbacks (and they still
lost both contests). Well likely be high on
Atlantas passing game, although well see if
theyll have Jake Matthews (ankle) back for
it. His absence factored into Matt Ryan
struggling at Cincinnati. This is the Thursday
game, making it less likely Matthews will
return. The Falcons continued to give
snaps to four different running backs against
Cincinnati; tough to consider putting any of
them into a lineup. Roddy White has a
hamstring injury that could limit him this
week (or even keep him out). If White
doesnt play, that would make Harry Douglas
and Devin Hester intriguing Week 3 fill-in
options.
BALTIMORE:
The Ravens seem committed to trying to get
Bernard Pierce going as their starting
tailback. Justin Forsett outplayed him in
Week 1, but the team stuck with Pierce
against Pittsburgh, even while he was
averaging under 3 yards per carry in the first
half. Pierce ended up carrying 22 times for
96 yards, while Forsett got only 8 carries.
Neither one was particularly impressive.
Forsett had a 41-yard run but otherwise
gained only 15 yards. Well expect more of
this kind of mix going forward. Neither back
looks particularly good right now, but the
running game might click in at some point a
few weeks down the road. Baltimore has
problems with short-yardage rushing, to the
point where it used Joe Flacco on four
quarterback sneaks against the Steelers.
Steve Smith looks like the clear No. 1
receiver. Dennis Pitta is the top tight end,
but Owen Daniels will also play, and Daniels
actually caught 2 more passes against
Pittsburgh, with a pair of goal-line flips.
The Ravens have released Ray Rice, and
hes been suspended indefinitely by the
league, but theres still a chance hell play
for somebody at some point this year. The
league suspended him for two games in July,
but it hasnt really given any reason for the
additional suspension, so there are some
double-jeopardy issues. Under the leagues
newly revised domestic violence policy, Rice
would seem to be in line for a six-game
suspension. The league hasnt indicated why
it would feel he merited a longer suspension.
So there are some angles for Rices
attorneys to work. Theres a reasonable
chance hell be cleared to play in 2014; then
its just a matter of if theres a team thats
willing to take on that distraction. Its
possible.
BUFFALO:
Sammy Watkins is evidence that sometimes
its best to be patient, rather than
overreacting to whats happening. Watkins
really didnt do much in the preseason; he
didnt catch many passes, and they werent
getting him downfield. But he had a breakout
game against Miami, catching 8 passes for
117 yards and a touchdown. Watkins also
nearly caught a 45-yard touchdown on the
first series of that game (the defensive back
pulled on his arm to cause the ball to come
loose). Roberts Woods is the teams more
polished receiver, but Watkins is simply a lot
more talented (which is why he was the No.
4 pick overall in the draft).
CAROLINA:
Reports of Cam Newtons demise have been
greatly exaggerated. In the offseason, he
lost three wide receivers from last year and
underwent ankle surgery. Then he broke a rib
in a preseason game. But he looked awfully
strong in the Detroit game. He completed 65
percent of his passes, and he threw for 281
yards more than all but one of his games
last year. Probably because of the ankle and
back, he didnt run as often in the Detroit
game, but Newton definitely is still a viable
fantasy option, and the Panthers are still
players in the NFC South at 2-0, theyre
already ahead of Atlanta and New Orleans.
The Panthers arent running the ball as well
this year, and that might cause them to rely
more on Newton as a passer. As for the
three receivers, Benjamin-Cotchery-Avant
thus far appears to be as good as or better
than Smith-LaFell-Ginn.
CHICAGO:
The Bears managed to wiggle off the hook at
San Francisco, but they have problems right
now. Their two key receivers are both playing
hurt, and the offensive line probably will
again be without two starters on Sunday.
Matt Forte averaged under 2 yards per carry

against the 49ers. With the receiver injuries,
Martellus Bennett should be more involved;
he caught 7 passes at San Francisco. For
this week, the Bears should mostly focus on
passing. The Jets have a great run defense,
while their secondary is weak. Santonio
Holmes, of course, used to play for the Jets,
but he wont appear too high on our Week 3
rankings.
CINCINNATI:
Marvin Lewis says that A.J. Green (toe/foot)
doesnt have a long-term injury, but with the
Bengals having a bye in Week 4, theyll
probably look to hold him out this week. Its
possible hell miss additional time, but the
bye week at least gives him three full weeks
to get healthy before the next contest. In his
absence, Cincinnati will likely use Dane
Sanzenbacher across from Mohamed Sanu;
Brandon Tate will also play. Our suspicion is
the primary beneficiaries (aside from Sanu)
will be Jermaine Gresham and Giovani
Bernard. With Marvin Jones and Tyler Eifert
also sidelined, those guys will see a lot more
passes. Jeremy Hill had a strong
performance against Atlanta; its a
formidable 1-2 punch with him and Bernard.
Hes a better bet for goal-line work, although
note that both scored short touchdowns
against Atlanta. Bernards came from 4
yards out.
CLEVELAND:
Ben Tate left the Week 1 game with a knee
injury that he said wasnt too serious. Then
he was supposed to be out 2-4 games.
Cleveland hosts Baltimore this week, then it
has a bye. Sounds like Tate probably will be
back in Week 5. When he returns, it should
be as part of a time-share. Tate should start
and be the featured guy, but the rookies
(Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell) are
playing well enough that one of them will
probably get a third of the work. The Browns
havent yet ruled out Tate for Sundays
game. With a new drug-testing deal, Josh
Gordon will be allowed to play in the final six
games. Hes at the facility practicing, and
hell be eligible to return in Week 12. Could
give teams a nice boost for the playoffs
probably will be a top-15 receiver in that
closing stretch of the season. Until then,
Andrew Hawkins looks like the No. 1 option;
Hawkins has caught 14 passes in two
games.
DALLAS:
DeMarco Murray is off to a huge start, and it
should continue this week. The Cowboys are
at St. Louis, which couldnt stop Bobby
Rainey (144 yards) last week. Murray has
started two previous games against the
Rams, and hes gone for at least 175 yards
in both of them. The Cowboys Defense is
thin on talent, but its been much better than
expected in the first two games. San
Francisco didnt put up big numbers against
it, and the Titans scored only 10 points in a
home loss. Its definitely a bottom-10 type of
defense, but not one that we can project will
simply get pushed around week in and week
out.
DENVER:
C.J. Anderson should be on a roster in all
fantasy leagues. Hes the No. 2 tailback in
this offense; he seems to have moved
ahead of Ronnie Hillman (who hasnt even
played). And Anderson has outplayed
Montee Ball in both games. Ball averaged
only 2.9 yards per carry against Indianapolis.
If not for a 23-yard run on a third-and-long,
he would have been under 4 yards per carry
against Kansas City. Thats pretty lousy,
considering hes facing nothing but soft
fronts (with opponents more concerned with
stopping Peyton Manning). Anderson,
meanwhile, has averaged over 6 yards per
carry in each game. Julius Thomas has
caught 4 TDs in two games and faces a
Seahawks defense that just let a tight end
(Antonio Gates) catch 3 TDs. Playing at
Seattle is a tough assignment, but Thomas
should be a big part of the game plan.
With a new drug-testing deal getting
approved, Wes Welker should be cleared to
return for this game. Peyton Manning has
finished under 270 passing yards in both
games. Last year he finished under 270 only
twice all year, and one of those games came
in Week 17 when he left at halftime.
DETROIT:
The Lions are using all three of their tight
ends. Brandon Pettigrew is the starter
and the most traditional in-line type of tight
end. But Eric Ebron is playing plenty, and
theyre trying to get him the ball; he had 5
targets at Carolina. Joseph Fauria probably
will play the least of these guys, but when
theyre in the red zone, they like to try to
utilize his 6-foot-7 height and large hands.
The Lions havent been able to run
effectively in either of their games. Theyre
going with a one-two punch of Joique Bell
and Reggie Bush, and neither averages
better than 3.5 per attempt yet. Bell has 10
more carries after two games. Nate
Freese is 0-3 on field goals outside 40
yards. The Lions want to be patient with their
rookie kicker, but they have to be mulling
how many more misses they can take before
they make a change.
GREEN BAY:
The Packers look like theyre ready to
transition from Jarrett Boykin to Davante
Adams. Adams is just a rookie, and the
typical course in Green Bay is bring those
guys along slowly. But Adams played ahead
of Boykin for the vast majority of the Jets
game. Boykin played almost all of the first
quarter, then it was Adams for almost the
entire rest of the game (the team using
three-receiver sets almost full time). Adams
caught 5 passes for 50 yards. Re-watching
this game, we couldnt find any evidence of
Boykin getting hurt or making some kind of
mental error that caused them to bench him.
Maybe they just like Adams more. With his
size and after-the-catch ability, hes a really
nice fit with this offense. He passes the
eyeball test. A year from now, he might be
pretty much interchangeable with Jordy
Nelson and Randall Cobb. Were re-slotting
these receivers as if the Packers are
promoting Adams.
HOUSTON:
Run, run, pass: thats the formula the
Texans will follow in most of their games.
Arian Foster has touched the ball 59 times
in the first two games, and it seems evident
the Texans will keep running it as long as its
effective. Foster is a poor bet to stay healthy
with that kind of workload, but hell be a top
fantasy back until he gets hurt. Bill OBrien
conceded Monday that Fosters touches will
need to managed somewhat, but hes still a
safe bet for in the neighborhood of 20
carries per week. Make sure that Alfred Blue
is on a roster, as hes been the No. 2 and
would likely inherit that featured role if
Foster misses time. DeAndre Hopkins
has scored in each of the first two games.
Its a lesser passing game, though, so tough
to see Hopkins continuing to produce.
INDIANAPOLIS:
Ahmad Bradshaw looks ready to pass Trent
Richardson in significance in the
Indianapolis backfield (if he hasnt already).
Hes better in the passing game, and hes a
better runner. Richardson ran for 79 yards
on Monday (his best game as a Colt) but
Bradshaw ran for only 9 fewer yards with 8
fewer carries. Bradshaw also caught 5
passes, with a pair of touchdowns. This is a
timeshare. Theyll probably split the tailback
job pretty evenly, with Bradshaw probably
doing more damage with his touches.
Andrew Luck passed for 370 yards at
Denver, when the team fell way behind early.
But the MNF loss to Philadelphia served as a
reminder that when games are closer, Pep
Hamilton can be overly conservative as a
play caller. In that one, Luck went 20 of 34
for just 172 yards.
JACKSONVILLE:
Marcedes Lewis has been playing good ball;
he caught a long touchdown at Washington,
and he scored in 4 of his last 5 games in
2013. But he suffered a high ankle sprain at
5 Fantasy Index Redrafter www.fantasyindex.com 206-527-4444 September 16, 2014
Washington, and it will be late October
before hes healthy enough to potentially use
in a fantasy lineup. The Jaguars dont have a
comparable tight end to plug into that role.
Mickey Shuler replaced him on Sunday, but
theyd probably prefer Clay Harbor, who
should return this week. Allen Hurns was
the surprise breakout star of Week 1, but he
left the Washington game with an ankle
injury on their final play. It didnt look
particularly serious, so were guessing hell
be back in Week 3 (or definitely Week 4).
Theres a lot of parity right now in this
receiving corps. Allen Robinson caught 4
passes at Washington. With Marqise Lee
also available and Cecil Shorts III coming
back from a hamstring injury, it will be tough
for any one guy to put up viable numbers.
Since taking a 17-0 lead at Philadelphia, the
Jaguars have been outscored 75-10.
KANSAS CITY:
Jamaal Charles has a high-ankle sprain,
according to Andy Reid. Reid says its not as
serious as most sprains of that nature, but
those injuries need time to heal. Roddy
White proved that last year. Our guess is
Charles will sit out the next three games,
then return after the Week 6 bye. Knile
Davis should be a top-8 back while filling in.
Hes got the same kind of run-catch game,
and hell be a full-time player. The schedule
isnt particularly favorable at Miami, New
England, at San Francisco. Kansas City
might have to think about replacing Cairo
Santos before long. Hes missed field goals
two weeks in a row, and he had a short
kickoff at Denver that was returned 54
yards.
MIAMI:
Knowshon Moreno left the Buffalo game on
his first carry with an elbow injury. He should
be down for about a month. Miami plays
Kansas City and Oakland the next two
weeks, then it has a bye. Moreno might be
able to return for the Week 6 game against
Green Bay (but not necessarily; theres no
timeline yet). Lamar Miller should take on
more of a featured-type role for the next two
games; he left the Buffalo game with an
ankle injury, but it doesnt look that serious.
Damien Williams moves up into the No. 2
role. Mike Wallace is on fire right now.
Theyre really trying to get the ball to him,
and hes making plays. Had a great
touchdown at Buffalo and was open for a
long touchdown but the ball was poorly
thrown. Jarvis Landry appears to have
won the teams No. 3 receiver job.
MINNESOTA:
The Vikings intend to use Adrian Peterson
on Sunday, but its a fluid situation.
Additional charges against Peterson
surfaced on Monday, which could change the
teams thinking. Or the league could step in;
it suspended Ben Roethlisberger for four
games back in 2010, even though
Roethlisberger was never charged with a
crime. Nobody really knows for sure how it
will play out. The decision to reinstate
Peterson Monday could have been an owner
(rather than coach) driven decision, which
further complicates things. Matt Asiata
could end up starting most of the teams
remaining games. The Vikings also have
Jerrick McKinnon, and his role could expand
if Peterson is shelved for an extended
period. McKinnon played almost a third of
Sundays game. Matt Cassel threw 4
interceptions against New England. He might
be just another meltdown game away from
the Vikings sticking Teddy Bridgewater into
the lineup.
NEW ENGLAND:
Tom Brady didnt have to do much against
Minnesota, and that might be the case again
this week. New England is home against
Oakland, which is both soft against the run
and poor on offense. Lots of teams on the
schedule, though, that the Patriots offense
will have to do more against. Cincinnati,
Denver, Indianapolis, San Diego, and the
other three NFC North teams, all of whom
are strong on offense, show up on New
Englands schedule. As long as Stevan
Ridley hangs onto the ball, he should keep
that main running back role. Our sense is
that Ridley will be more productive in games
where the team is playing with a lead, while
Shane Vereen will be busier in more
competitive contests, and matchups where
passing formations are emphasized. Oakland
will probably be a Ridley game.
NEW ORLEANS:
Mark Ingram is down for at least a month
with a broken hand. New Orleans has a
Week 6 bye, so maybe hes able to return for
Week 7. The primary beneficiary figures to be
Khiry Robinson, who should now get most of
the rushing attempts, and probably any goal-
line chances (he and Ingram had been
sharing those). Pierre Thomas will probably
remain in the passing downs back role,
although he could also get a few more
carries. Travaris Cadet could also see a nice
bump in playing time; Cadet saw a few plays
at running back in each of the first two
games. In any case, Robinson now looks like
the most significant player in this backfield.
Kenny Stills is back, and it looks like hell
have a role in the passing game. As a
receiver, Stills is more similar to Marques
Colston and Brandin Cooks than the bit
player guys Meachem, Morgan and Toon.
N.Y. GIANTS:
The Giants keep shooting themselves in the
foot with turnovers and dropped passes, but
its too early to totally bail on this offense.
They host Houston this week, then play five
straight games against teams we think are
soft on defense. In a six-week stretch that
also included their bye, New York will host
Atlanta and Indianapolis, and travel to
Washington, Philadelphia and Dallas. Their
offense could be pretty good in nearly all of
those games. Jerrel Jernigan has a mid-
foot sprain and could be sidelined for a
while. Undrafted Corey Washington or Odell
Beckham would slide into that third receiver
role.
N.Y. JETS:
Eric Decker left the Green Bay game in the
fourth quarter with a hamstring injury. He
might sit out this week. New York will face
a banged-up opponent this week. Chicago
had five defenders hurt in its win at San
Francisco, including three starters. The Jets
could have success pounding away with the
run in this game. Jace Amaro is playing
plenty, but no sign that hes going to make
any kind of meaningful impact before 2015.
OAKLAND:
The Raiders are a disaster on both offense
and defense, and it sounds like it might not
be long before Dennis Allen takes the fall for
his contributions to this mess. Few coaches
could do much with this roster, so we dont
expect the fantasy fortunes to change very
much regardless. Maurice Jones-Drew
(hand surgery) is expected to be down
another game or two, although the Raiders
havent been forthcoming with a timetable.
Oakland has a Week 5 bye, so maybe hell
be held out until after that, leaving Darren
McFadden in a leading role. Latavius Murray
had 3 more kickoff returns (4) than offensive
touches (1) last week, so no indication hes
in line for an expanded role. Rod Streater
(hip) will likely be questionable for this week.
The Raiders signed Vincent Brown on
Monday. He could become a top-3 receiver
at some point for them, but were not sure
hell move past the guys they have Jones,
Moore, Streater, Holmes and Butler.
PHILADELPHIA:
Its apparent now that Darren Sproles will be
a big part of this offense. Hes an
undersized back, but with the kind of system
the Eagles run, its not about trying to grind
yards out between the tackles. Theyre
turning games into a track meet with their
stretch runs and fast-paced play calling. With
the number of plays they run, theres enough
room for a second quality running back in
addition to LeSean McCoy. The Eagles
are doing a great job of getting Zach Ertz
6 Fantasy Index Redrafter www.fantasyindex.com 206-527-4444 September 16, 2014
downfield for big chunks of yardage. Hes got
6 catches over 20 yards in the first two
weeks of the season. Last year, All-World
Jimmy Graham led all tight ends with 19
such receptions. The previous season, Rob
Gronkowski led tight ends with 13. Riley
Cooper doesnt seem to have it this year.
Hes caught only 5 passes for 37 yards in
two games. He dropped a touchdown at
Indianapolis, and hes caught only 5 of the
10 passes thrown his way thats 3.7 yards
per attempt. Cooper is just window dressing
in this offense; theyre trying to get the ball
to their running backs. Cooper definitely
wont be as good as Jeremy Maclin or Ertz, it
seems, and he might not even be as good
as Jordan Matthews.
PITTSBURGH:
LeVeon Bell looks like a top-5 running back.
Hes lost weight, and that makes him a lot
faster. In both games, hes made McCoy-like
cuts, making guys miss that would have
tackled him last week. Hes averaged over 5
yards per carry in both games. Hes also
playing a big role in the passing game 11
catches for 136 yards. Antonio Brown
looks like one of the top half dozen receivers
in the league. He gets open, catches a lot of
passes and makes people miss when the
ball is in his hands. Pittsburgh is at
Carolina this week, and hard to see them
scoring more than about 13 points in that
game.
ST. LOUIS:
Zac Stacy got three times as many carries
as Benny Cunningham against Tampa Bay
(19-6), so his role seems relatively secure.
He lost a fumble in that game, but was more
effective (3.7 yards per carry to 2.5) and
also punched in a short touchdown.
Tavon Austin has a sprained knee and is
expected to be out for at least a couple of
weeks. Austin isnt a big part of the teams
offense anyway. Shaun Hill (thigh) was
active behind Austin Davis but didnt play in
Week 2. Davis played well enough that we
expect Hill will continue to be battling an
injury of some sort until Davis turns in a poor
game. Jeff Fisher says Hill is definitely the
teams starter when healthy. Wide
receiver Stedman Bailey (drug suspension)
rejoins the team this week and looks about
as good as anyone they have short of Brian
Quick. Quick has led the team in receiving in
both games.
SAN DIEGO:
Ryan Mathews should be down for 4-6
games with sprained knee. The Chargers will
respond by elevating Donald Brown into the
starting lineup. He should do pretty much
everything Mathews was doing. Theyve also
got Danny Woodhead, but his role should
remain pretty similar maybe slightly more
touches. Antonio Gates has led the team
in receptions in both games and caught 3
TDs against the Seahawks. As the year
wears on, however, plenty of other players
will have chances to be featured. Definitely
Keenan Allen; he seems to be their No. 1
receiver. Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal are
both capable receivers. Ladarius Green has
caught only 2 passes so far, but hes a
talented, dangerous tight end, and theyll
use him a lot there should be many games
where hes more productive than Gates. And
Woodhead will be productive coming out of
the backfield.
SAN FRANCISCO:
Vernon Davis (ankle) left the Chicago game
and was on crutches afterwards. He could be
down for about a month if its a high-ankle
sprain. Derek Carrier caught 3 passes while
filling in against the Bears. Carrier is
normally their No. 3 tight end, but Vance
McDonald was also out, with a knee injury.
The offense has problems. San Francisco
scored 28 points at Dallas, but it got a
defensive touchdown and another drive was
only 1 yard. Then it finished with only 20
points at home against Chicago. Its not
firing on all cylinders, and Colin Kaepernick
seems to have the same issues as last year
in regards to seeing the field. Frank Gore
played well against Chicago, but hes an
older back whos slowing down. It might not
be long before the 49ers are mulling how to
get Carlos Hyde on the field more often.
SEATTLE:
The Seahawks have used Percy Harvin
extensively as a runner in both games. Hes
had over 40 rushing yards both weeks, with
a touchdown at San Diego (that wasnt really
a touchdown, but whatever). This is an angle
theyll continue to work another way to
keep defenses off balance. Russell
Wilson has been efficient in both games;
hes got a passer rating of 114.7. But they
havent been airing it out much; hes thrown
for only 191 and 202 yards. And his
production has been a little down as a
runner. Wilson has thrown 4 TDs, and
none of them have gone to a starting wide
receiver or tight end. Hes thrown 3 to three
different running backs, and one to situation
receiver Ricardo Lockette. No go-to guy in
this passing game. Pete Carroll says
Marshawn Lynch saw limited playing time
against San Diego because of a back injury.
Lynch has had back problems over the years
(including missing a game) but we dont
suspect its too serious.
TAMPA BAY:
The Buccaneers downplayed the knee injury
that Doug Martin was dealing with last
week, but he was inactive Sunday, while
Bobby Rainey had a big game. When Martin
returns (and it might be this week), our
guess is that the two will operate in some
sort of committee, with Rainey possibly
continuing to start. Weve viewed Martin as
the more talented back, but the coaching
staff seems to also like Rainey. Martin was
able to put in a limited practice on both
Thursday and Friday, so our guess is hell be
available in Week 3. The Bucs are at Atlanta
in the Thursday night game.
TENNESSEE:
The Titans flopped against Dallas, and
things wont be any better this week. Theyre
at Cincinnati, which has one of the leagues
better defenses against both the run and the
pass, and might have a better all-around
offense than Dallas. Tough to see the Titans
doing much in this matchup. Shonn
Greene averaged 8 yards per carry but got
only 5 carries against the Cowboys. Part of
this can be attributed to the Titans falling
behind and abandoning the run, but they are
also committed to using a host of backs.
Their working in four different tailbacks
(including McCluster, Sankey and Leon
Washington) and all of those guys got into
the game on the teams first two series on
Sunday. Things should be better in upcoming
games against lesser offensive teams
(Cleveland and Jacksonville in Week 5 and
6).
WASHINGTON:
Robert Griffin III (dislocated ankle) should
miss at least five games. Washington will be
in no hurry to get him back in the lineup if
Kirk Cousins is playing well. Cousins was
better in the preseason, and he finished with
a 109.4 passer rating against Jacksonville.
DeSean Jackson (sprained shoulder) also
left the Jacksonville game early but hopes to
return this week. As luck would have it, the
game is at Philadelphia this week the team
that released Jackson. Roy Helu (quad)
also left the Jaguars game. Thats why Silas
Redd was in there late to score the final
touchdown. Jordan Reed (hamstring)
potentially could miss another game. If so,
Niles Paul will have to be considered as a
possible Week 3 replacement. Since Reed
got hurt early in the first game, Paul has
caught 12 passes for 185 yards and a
touchdown. Hes the same kind of mobile,
pass-catching tight end (like Reed, really as
much a wide receiver as a tight end). At this
point, Reed looks about 50-50 for this
weeks game.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Off-field concerns
either are having or probably will have a long-
term effect on a couple of defensive linemen.
First, the Panthers deactivated Greg Hardy
for their Week 2 game. Hardy was found guilty
of domestic assault, but is appealing. Thus
far, the league hasnt stepped in, letting the
judicial process play out, but that could
change, and the Panthers concede they dont
know if Hardy will return in Week 3 or not.
Similarly, the 49ers have Ray McDonald,
whos also been accused of domestic assault;
that case is under investigation. So far the
team and the league have declined to
suspend him; McDonald at this point hasnt
even been charged. But tough to say what will
happen going forward. If youre counting on
either of these players, best to come up with a
backup plan. One noteworthy bit of on-field
violence involved Jets lineman Muhammed
Wilkerson, ejected for throwing a punch in
New Yorks loss to the Packers. Well see if
Wilkerson faces further discipline for his
meltdown. If you watched the Houston
game last week, you saw the Texans line up
J.J. Watt at tight end for a goal-line play and
throw him a touchdown. Thats a play that
might show up again. Not that anyone needs a
reason to start Watt, but theres another
boost to his value if your league gives credit
for offensive touchdowns by IDPs. Chris
Long (ankle) was placed on short-term IR by
the Rams. Short-term means he wont be able
to return until Week 10, so if youve got him
on your roster, go ahead and move on.
William Hayes will be the main man at that
spot across from Robert Quinn, but isnt likely
to be a full-time player. Adrian Clayborn
(biceps) is out for the year. Tampa will replace
him with William Gholston. The Bucs on
Sunday also lost Gerald McCoy to a broken
hand. No indication yet on how much time
hell miss (or if hell try to play with a big club
on his hand), but make sure hes available
before counting on him.
LINEBACKERS: The Bucs lost Mason
Foster to a shoulder injury in their game
against the Rams. Foster isnt an elite
defender, but hes a very productive one at
middle linebacker. Sounds like hell miss
some time, but hes worth hanging onto until
we find out how much. The Bucs replaced him
with Dane Fletcher. Mychal
Kendricks (calf) was knocked out of
Philadelphias Monday night game against the
Colts. The lesser replacement is Casey
Matthews, should you need a fill-in in Week 3.
Jerrell Freeman (hamstring) missed that
Colts-Eagles game. Hes a top tackler and its
a sizable step down to Josh McNary. No
indication how much more time Freeman will
miss, but you can probably do better than
McNary if youre in need of a replacement for
Freeman. Two other linebacker injuries. The
Giants may be without Jon Beason, who is
dealing with a toe injury. Mark Herzlich is
the lesser replacement. Dallas is without
Justin Durant (groin), so Anthony
Hitchens fills in. Theres some fantasy value
there, especially for Herzlich at middle
linebacker. Durant (who plays on the weak
side) could miss up to a month. With Beason,
its uncertain if hell be out for an extended
period or not, but hes got an extensive injury
history.
DEFENSIVE BACKS: Louis Delmas
looked like a playmaker when he broke in with
the Lions, but hes not that player anymore.
He was only able to land a one-year deal with
the Dolphins, and theyve now benched him
for Michael Thomas. Not that Thomas is
an elite option; were not even sure hell keep
that job all year. But Delmas can be safely
removed from fantasy rosters. Charles
Tillman is one of the top defensive backs;
very productive in interceptions and forcing
fumbles. When healthy, that is; hes done for
the season after tearing his triceps against
the 49ers. The Bears will get by with Tim
Jennings and rookie Kyle Fuller; they wont
have much of a downgrade except in their
nickel packages. Fuller is a guy who should be
on fantasy rosters. Johnathan Cyprien
(concussion) missed Week 2, and its
apparently a significant injury hes no lock
to be cleared for Week 3. Make sure hes
active before counting on him in your lineup.
Your weekly Tyrann Mathieu update: the
Honey Badger was active and played limited
snaps for the Cardinals last week, coming off
major knee surgery. At the moment, hes not
playing enough to be in starting lineups in IDP
leagues, but that day isnt too far off. Make
sure hes on a roster.
