Five Questions
with Sally Rippin
Q1: Where did the inspiration for
the character of Billie B. Brown
come from?
A: Almost everything Billie B Brown does is something
I did as a little girl. I was just like Billie B Brown, but she
looks just like Aki, the illustrator!
Q2: What is your favourite Billie B. Brown book?
A: Oh, its hard to pick a favourite, but I do love The
Big Sister when we get to meet baby Noah for the rst
time.
Q3: What is the best part about creating the world
that Billie B. Brown lives in?
A: Everything! I have such fun writing the stories and
seeing them come to life in Akis illustrations. But Id
have to say my favourite part is meeting Billie fans.
Q4: When you were young, what was your favourite
book?
A: Oh, thats hard to choose, too. But it would be a
toss-up between Charlottes Web, Storm Boy and The
Magic Finger by Roald Dahl.
Q5: What advice do you have for Billie B. Brown fans
who want to become writers?
A: Use your own experience. Think of things that have
happened to you and how that made you feel. The
stories might seem ordinary to you, but they could be
extraordinary to someone else.

Q & A with
Jane Jolly and
Robert Ingpen
JAne JollY
Q. What gave you the inspiration for the idea of Tea and
Sugar Christmas?
A. The Tea and Sugar train had been running from Pt
Augusta to Kalgoorlie since 1915 and I had heard about it as a
child and was fascinated by the idea of buying your groceries
from a train. In 1983 I worked on Commonwealth Hill Station
as governess for the year, and Tarcoola was the local (96km
away) town. This is the town which I have roughly based
the story in. I heard lots of anecdotes about the train but
when I heard that Father Christmas travelled on the train in
December each year, and I saw images of him walking along
the train track, I knew that it would make a wonderful story.
Q. Did you draw on your own experience for the story?
A. I never actually used the Tea and Sugar train. The closest I
came to it was to see it in Tarcoola and to hear about it and
the characters who worked and travelled on it.
RoBeRt InGPen
Q. What attracted you to this story?
A. The story of the service to railway families across the
outback by using a regular train supply service was new to
me and I wanted to know more. Tea and Sugar Christmas
allowed me to become involved as a picture-maker to inform
and entertain children with this delightful story.

Q & A with A. F. Harrold
Q: Tell us a bit about your new book
The Imaginary?
A: The Imaginary tells the story of Rudger, whos the
imaginary friend of Amanda, and Amanda whos the real friend
of Rudger. One day Amanda gets knocked down by a car and
Rudger is left on his own, which is tricky since hes imaginary. He
has to nd someone to imagine him, and is helped in this by a
cat called Zinzan. Theres also a rather unpleasant chap, called
Mr Bunting, who is out there hunting imaginary friends and
eating them.
Q: What inspired you to write The Imaginary?
A: Once upon a time I had two pictures appear in my head.
The rst was an imaginary friend stood at the side of the road,
wondering what to do next, now their real friend was gone, and
the other was of a canteen, a proper greasy spoon looking caff,
full of big blokes with string vests and tattoos and cigarettes.
That was the rst inkling of the Agency of Imaginary Friends,
which changed a lot by the time the book got written. But thats
where it started. Two mental pictures, colliding.
Q: Did you ever have your own imaginary friend?
A: Not that I remember. I had a real one once though.
Q: How did you come up with the character Mr Bunting?
A: Mr Bunting appeared knocking at Amandas door one day
when I knew there needed to be a villain, but I didnt know who
or what it would be.
Q: How do you keep your beard so beautiful ?
A: Laziness and oils.
Q: Do you ever turn to the back of a book to read the end rst?
A: I sometimes read the last page of my own books out at
readings, because Im proud of some of my endings, but I prefer
to know nothing at all about a book before I read it.

Authorillustrator
Judith Rossell and
ABC Books childrens
publisher Chren Byng
on Withering-by-Sea
Judith says: Withering-by-Sea began with an image in my
head, of a young girl hiding in a shadowy conservatory,
tracing a path through the Amazon jungle in an Atlas.
Peering through the dripping, wet ferns, she sees something
she shouldnt have.
When I began writing, Stella Montgomery emerged as a
brave heroine, living in the Hotel Majestic, with her three
dreadful Aunts, in the coastal town of Withering-by-Sea.
Stellas world is a fantastical Victorian England, and I enjoyed
lling it with a dancing girls and singing cats, a murderous
stage magician and other fantastical characters.
I love Victoriana, and I think this story is a bit like a Victorian
plum cake, stuffed full of candied gs and brandy, and
articial cherries laced with arsenic.
Chren says: A few years ago, Melbourne illustrator Judith
Rossell visited our ofces to show us what shed been up
to. Her portfolio was full of gorgeous illustrations, but right
at the back were a few very special creations: pictures that
showed a Victorian-era girl and her fascinating world.
Jude told us that the drawings were to accompany a novel
she was writing The pictures were stunning but what
were the chances her words would be as wonderful as her
drawings?
I am positively giddy about publishing Withering-by-Sea. Its
a book weve been lavishing with love and attention over the
last year. Enjoy!

Whilst there have been many books
written about Gallipoli and its battles,
Jackie wanted to write a book about
the place, from peace to devastation
during the months of April to December
1915, and then the slow recovery from shattered dirt
to scrub, from brush to remembrance.
As Jackie says: Pa Jack Sullivan fought at Gallipoli. He
was my father-in-law.
The beach had been beautiful ; a sandy shermans
cove with bright owers on the cliffs. The war created
a place of horror. This is the story of the place, not
just the men; about what is destroyed in war, but also,
what grows back.
Bruce loved working on this book and spent many
hours researching in the War Memorial.
As he said: I approached this project as a
documentary in the form of a picture book.
The more I researched, the more I realised I had
to base my illustrations on the actual historical data
as much as possible the original images were far
stronger than anything I could have imagined or
created from scratch.
It was a privilege to be asked to work on this book.
