Personal Protective Equipment
Day Operations: Safety footwear, hearing protection, high visibility shirt or vest, hard hat.
Provide UV sun protection where required, (broad brimmed hat, UV rated clothing, SPF 30+sunscreen, tinted safety glasses with adequate UV protection).
Night Operations: As above but with a safety vest or shirt suitable for night work (i.e. Rated D/N with reflective strips).
Ensure all PPE meets relevant Australian Standards. Inspect, and replace PPE as needed.
Foot Protection Hearing Protection Head Protection Eye Protection Hand Protection Protective Clothing Breathing Protection
Safety Notes The quality of PPW is important as join failure can lead to major leaks with potentially catastrophic outcomes (water, gas etc). Care must be taken to ensure safety of persons conducting PPW as they are often required to enter confined spaces and work in trenches.
Main hazards include: - trench failure - heating plate burns - pressurised fluid escape - gas leaks, fire/explosion - soil contamination - electric shock/electrocution - atmospheric contamination (confined spaces)

Task Breakdown Possible Safety or Environmental Hazards RB Control Measures to Reduce risk RA Responsible Officer NOTE: RB =Risk Rating before controls implemented - RA =Risk Rating after controls are implemented. Planning (work environment) Personal Injury: - crushing - exposure to atmospheric contaminants - exposure to chemicals - fire/explosion
If Trench required. Check: - previous excavations in area - moisture content of soil - water table - faults - possibility of flooding
If Confined Space entry required. Check Permit system in place
Ensure: - weather protection provided (such as tent) if required - adequate lighting - adequate communication systems (especially for remote locations) - location is signed and barricaded - traffic management plan in place - Safety Data Sheets are available (for cleaning chemicals)
Develop and implement specific SWMS, as required: - trench operations - confined space entry - tag out/lock out

Legislation Beach 4A Follow manufacturers instructions to determine: - times - pressures - temperatures For each diameter of pipe.
Develop specific methodology. Include type of butt welding machine (manual, semi or fully automated) and ensure machine is appropriate for diameter of pipe.
Seek approval from competent person (such as an Engineer).
Note: Test welds should be carried out using same pipe diameter, methodology, equipment and operator before work begins.
2M Personnel Personal Injury: - crushing - exposure to atmospheric contaminants - exposure to chemicals - fire/explosion
Legislation Beach 4A All persons using Polyethylene Pipe Welding (PPW) equipment must have attended an accredited training course and hold current accreditation.
All operators should read and understand manufacturers instruction.
Training should include (where relevant) - trenching - confined spaces - emergency/rescue procedures

Preparation/Set-up Personal Injury: - crushing - fire/explosion - electric shock - high pressure fluid - laceration
Legislation Beach 3H Inspect equipment. Check: - Butt welding machine positioned on stable, flat ground. - Butt welding machine is not placed in water or wet conditions - Electric cord is undamaged and within test timeframe (check test tag) - Heating plate is clean and free of defects - End facing blades are undamaged and sharpened/replaced where required. - Pressure gauges, valves etc are present and in worker order - No fluid leaks/pressure drops - PPE is supplied/worn 2M Operation Personal Injury: - crushing - exposure to atmospheric contaminants - exposure to chemicals - fire/explosion
Ensure pipe ends are clean, dry and free of foreign materials. Follow safety precautions in Safety Data Sheet for any cleaning chemicals used. Place pipe ends into machine and clamp to secure
Shave (face) pipe ends ensure smooth, notch free ends with acceptable gap size. Do not touch pipe ends.
Note: Never attempt to remove shavings while facer is running. Disconnect power from the facer, and remove the facer blades before attempting any maintenance or adjustment
Ensure correct pipe alignment. Keep body parts clear of hydraulic jaws check alignment with straight edge (level) not fingers. 2M
