Genre Vampires

The first ever Vampire themed movie was released in the early 1800s
called The Vampyre by John Polidori, albeit the movie wasnt as
famously known, it was still successful and sparked a vampire craze
across the continent. The eminently known genre is still popular today.
The first ever notable vampire film was called Nosferatu: Eine
Symphonie des Gravens. Till this day the silent film is still popular
among the vampire crazed fans however, the genre of the movie can
be debateable. Of course the movie was made on the terms to be a
horror, nevertheless most people can argue on the fact as to some
people just find the movie can be outright hilarious to them however
some still do find the eeriness of the movie to be scary.

The very first scene of the opening of the movie shows a clock striking
12:00am which is just about visible to the viewers as the moonlight is
illuminated of it meanwhile the background is still pitch black. This
gives of the chilling effect as the only thing noticeable is a large clock,
adding to the fact that its completely silent and the only diagetic
sound heard is of the clock, thereby increasing the disturbing effect.
Accumulating that with the non-diagetic music played in the
background which is quite gothic just builds up the hair-raising effect
for the viewers. The movie generates a smoke and mirrors effect
alluding people into believing in the concept of vampires in the 1900s
and that they were harmful creatures, however in the modern era
vampires are more associated with something out of a romance
movie rather than a horror. Perceiving peoples beliefs to think that
theyre no longer something used to scare away kids to bed or
bloodsucking monsters but rather something worth to acknowledge
and admire.

You can see the contrast of the 2 films and how the genre of vampires
has evolved throughout time. The iconography related to vampire is
normally about them being ominous creatures of the un-dead and how
theyre only defeated by crosses and holy water. Nevertheless the
perception of it all is so different in the modern day that theyre now
related with love and romance. This genre remains popular
particularly because the notion of it all is so appealing to young girls
who fantasize about the concept of never ending love and putting the
whole thing on an unnecessary pedestal, unlike before where people
were essentially scared about watching vampire films. This is because,
before, the movies often featured dark, gloomy locations and used
graveyards to illustrate that theyre creatures of the dead as well as
using spine-chilling sound effects however, now, its all changed and
contemporary idea of them turning into ash has changed into them
sparkling like diamonds in the sun. This now comparing the 2 entirely
different themes, connected with the same genre is quite laughable.
