First Baptist Needs You to Lead!
FBC will be electing a slate of officers at the 2015 Annual Business Gathering in January. As the Nominating Committee
begins the process of filling these elected positions, we invite you to pray for the committee and the current leadership as
we prepare for 2015. We have eight Ministries at FBC: Deacons, Evangelism, Facilities, Finance, Missions, Membership,
Spiritual Formation, and Worship. For each of these Ministries, we elect a Chair, a Vice-Chair, and a Steward (or liaison to
the Spiritual Leadership Team.) In addition, there are four officers of the church who are a part of the Spiritual Leader-
ship Team: Moderator, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Clerk. And there are two additional standing committees with
elected leadership: Nominating and Staff Relations. Of course, many of these positions have been filled for the coming
year, but we would invite you to read through this list of Ministries and let us know if you have an interest in serving in an
elected or volunteer capacity in the upcoming year. And again, please pray for the Nominating committee and our church
leadership as we together ask where God is leading us this year and in the years ahead. Please contact Pastor Matt, Dawn
Trent, or Sally Heilman with any interests or questions you might have.
~Nominating Committee, Sally Heilman, Chair

Precious in Gods Sight: Answering the Call
to Protect and Cherish Every Child
October Worship Series

We borrow our October wor-
ship series title from the Chil-
drens Defense Fund, a group
that advocates for the needs
and concerns of children. As
Christians, we believe it is a
significant part of our call to
care for the most vulnerable
among us. But what exactly does that look like? We
will together examine our call to cherish and protect
each child, for as the song goes, they are precious in
his sight. As well, October 19
th
will be our annual
Childrens Sabbath Sunday, when our children lend
their voices to our worship with a significant leadership
role.

October 12: A Voice for the Voiceless
(Exodus 32.1-14)
October 19: Childrens Sabbath
(Matthew 19.13-15)
October 26: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself,
No Matter How Short They Are
(Matthew 22.34-46)
Thanks for inviting me to be
a part of First Baptist Law-
rence at this critical and excit-
ing time in your ministry. As
the Senior Pastor at First Bap-
tist Topeka, I had the oppor-
tunity to know some of your
leaders and to form impressions of your ministry. I was,
and still am, impressed.

During our time together, I have two priorities. 1. To pro-
vide guidance to the ministries of Spiritual Formation and
2. to help to bring to reality your vision of FBC Lawrence
as a teaching congregation particularly with the new min-
istry with Interns and Adjuncts. It is the vision of the
teaching church that drew me to work with you.

The good news is that we are under way. Cody Knapik is
on board and off to a terrific start as an Intern Pastor for
Youth Ministries and Rev. Cheryl Harader is beginning to
shape a ministry with college students as well as exploring
options with Senior Adults. The hopeful news is that
possible candidates for the Intern Ministry with Children
continue to emerge and we expect to find the right person
for that position soon. You are more than invited to say a
prayer or two here.

My primary work days in Lawrence are Tuesday, Wednes-
day and Sunday but the schedule is flexible. Dont hesi-
tate to call if I can be helpful. And again, thanks for this
opportunity to serve with you.
~Joe Kutter
