STRATHMORE
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
A new program has come to Strathmore
thats meant to help encourage healthy eat-
ing while making it an affordable option.
The Community Kitchens Program of Cal-
gary, in conjunction with Strathmore FCSS
and Wheatland FCSS, has brought the Good
Food Box program to the area.
We have programs all over Strathmore
on healthy eating and all the TV shows,
everywhere you go everyone is talking
about healthy eating, healthy kids and yet
our produce is so expensive. So this is one
way to help families eat healthy and have it
be affordable for them as well. Thats why
we wanted to bring this program to Strath-
more, said Dahrlyne Knaus, FCSS program-
mer.
This was our rst time placing an order.
We got 29 orders for the boxes which was
very exciting, I was hopeful we would get
10. We already have eight orders for our
next order, so thats fabulous.
The boxes can be purchased in three dif-
ferent sizes, small, which is $20 for 25-30lbs
of food, medium for $25 and is 35-40lbs
of food, or large which is 45-50lbs for $30.
Each box contains the same main staples,
potatoes, carrots, onion, apples and orang-
es, and then is lled with whatever other
fruits and vegetables available at the best
price that week.
The program is available to anyone who
is interested in taking part, with no cutoff
on how many people can order each time.
If some people need two boxes, thats also
an option, though courtesy would be to not
order more than what you would need.
The program is made possible because
Community Kitchens bypass retailers, go-
ing strictly to the importers and the pro-
duce handlers in the province, said Marilyn
Gunn, Chief Executive Ofcer and Found-
er of Community Kitchens of Calgary. The
Produce Marketing Association then helps
them get in touch with the different sup-
pliers.
We started it because the rst thing peo-
ple leave out of their grocery order when
theyre struggling nancially is usually pro-
duce, said Gunn.
She had rst found out about the program
being run in Toronto and in 99 she ew
down to nd out more.

That year Calgarys rst Good Food Boxes were delivered.
A route has been set up for the program and will see boxes
delivered to Chestermere, Strathmore, and Wheatland Coun-
ty and soon to Siksika.
Once you set up a route and youre on the road you want
to reach as many people as you can because you know there
is issues in trying to get fresh produce, especially with the
cost right now, its raised so high, its very difcult, especially
in the rural areas it gets even costlier because of transporta-
tion, said Gunn.
Community Kitchens also does a monthly comparison at
the supermarkets in Calgary, and each week when shopping
for their produce they also do a cost comparison with the
suppliers to ensure they always get the best prices.
There are only a few more delivery dates available for the
2014 calendar, and orders must be placed and paid for ap-
proximately 10 days prior to delivery. Remaining times and
pick up dates can be found on Page 4 in the Town of Strath-
more ad, or by calling either Strathmore FCSS, 403-934-9090
or Wheatland FCSS at 403-934-5335. The program starts
again in January, with the dates to be determined.

more prevalent than it was back in Foxs day, with nearly everyone being impacted by it in some way.

THE CAPTIVE
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Two Strathmore teens that were look-
ing to play in a couple ball tournaments
this summer eventually decided to cre-
ate their own, and raise money for the
Canadian Diabetes Association in the
process.
We joined a slo-pitch team in the
league here in Strathmore. We were
kind of looking around for tourna-
ments and there wasnt really a whole
bunch at that time of the year so we
thought, instead of spending a bunch
of time looking for tournaments, we
might as well just make one, said Jason
Hobson, 16.
Then I talked to him about it (Shawn
Fraser, 16) and he has diabetes so then
we thought, were not just going to take
all this money from people, we might
as well donate all of the prots to an or-
ganization and we gured diabetes was
a good one to start out with.
The boys then got to work; they be-
gan collecting rafes prizes from fam-
ily, businesses and different organiza-
tions. They got 12 teams registered,
and two weeks before the tournament,
they were in Hussar working on getting
the diamonds ready, which was a little
more than they had anticipated.
It took both of them on mowers
about three hours and a half hours
just to cut the grass down. The whole
thing looked like a grass eld inside of
a fence, said Hobson, and they trans-
formed it back into a beautiful looking
ball eld. The night before the tourna-
ment, which was held Aug. 15-17, it
rained and Frasers dad had gone in
and pumped out the water from the
diamonds.
In the end, the event was more suc-
cessful than either teen could have an-
ticipated.
It was better than we expected prob-
ably for the rst year, and we would just
like to thank everyone who showed up
and donated, its a real appreciation for
that, said Fraser.
Its amazing actually, I was quite
pleased when I got the e-mail saying
that you guys had organized the event.
Its always fascinating when you nd
communities get together and pull of a
fundraiser like this, especially someone
in high school because its not some-
thing that most people in high school
are thinking about, said Jason Demers,
manager of Mission Funding for Alber-
ta/NWT with the Canadian Diabetes As-
sociation.
To do all the work that you guys did,
especially knowing that you guys did
the diamonds as well, thats impressive.
Alot of people would have given up
the fact that you guys persevered and
raised the money that you did is amaz-
ing.
Without these events we wouldnt
be able to put on the services that we
do, because we rely fully on the money
that is raised by donors, its not coming
from government.
The boys managed to raise $5,970 for
diabetes research and are already mak-
ing plans for next years event, which
will possibly be to raise funds for the
Heart and Stroke Foundation.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Whereas Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian
women and is a serious disease that will affect 24,400
women, 210 men and their families this year; and
Whereas It is a great importance that money be raised to fund
breast cancer research projects and community programs;
and
Whereas The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation strives to be an
effective advocate, a trusted leader, a respectful partner
and a resourceful catalyst in creating a future without
breast cancer.
Therefore, I, Mayor Michael Ell, proclaim the month of
October 2014 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Town of
Strathmore, Alberta this 1st day of October 2014.
Every year countless pumpkins are carved across North America to help get people
in the spirit for Halloween, but as we turn the calendar over to November many people
no longer have a use for that jack-o-lantern that was sitting on their front step. This
year Strathmore FCSS and the Youth Club of Strathmore have found an innovative
and unique resolution to that issue Our 2nd Annual Pumpkins in the Park.
This is a great way for families to interact and enjoy this season. On November 1st,
2014 we are hoping that all residents of Strathmore that have carved pumpkins will
drop them off at Kinsman Park before 4:00 pm. Volunteers will set them up throughout
the park and light them for a festive evening spectacular.
For two hours you and your family can wander the park and enjoy the festivities. The
event begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. Hot Chocolate will be available to help
keep you warm and music will ll the air.
Anyone taking in the event is encouraged to bring along a non-perishable food item,
new unwrapped toy or cash donation for the Good Food Box Program.
If you would like to extend the life-span of your jack-o-lantern this Halloween season
and you want everyone to enjoy your jack-o-lantern as well, all you have to do is
drop off your carved pumpkin at Kinsman Park on Saturday, November 1st, 2014 by

The creative process of art is a form of therapy that
involves self-expression and can help resolve conicts,
reduce stress as well as increase self-esteem.
The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective, in partnership with the Town of Strathmore, held their second
annual Arts & Sounds in the Park Festival on Sept. 26-27. The Friday evening concert took place in
Kinsmen Park - the weather was chilly, but coffee and hot chocolate were on hand. The crowd enjoyed
performances from The Dearhearts and Jenn Beaupre, who was accompanied by Angus Wilson and
Lewis Frere. Unfortunately the tents that were to be used for the Saturday Art Festival suffered severe
damage on Friday afternoon. A last minute venue change to the Strathmore Ag Grounds proved to
be the festivals biggest challenge. Despite the major setback, the Festival took place while visitors
strolled around wonderful art displays and were entertained on the main stage by various artists.

Protecting your hearing is very important. Even a

Some tobacco manufacturers are lowering their

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

Last Monday, as Parliament opened, Prime Minister
Stephen Harper delivered a barn-burner of a speech about
the work to be accomplished this year. Prime Minister Harper
outlined our Governments priorities: balancing the budget,
creating jobs and opportunities, providing further tax relief
for Canadian families, supporting and protecting Canadian
communities, and continuing to stand up for Canadian
values abroad.
I want to underline for you some of the highlights of Prime
Minister Harpers speech. If youd like to read the entire
speech, it is posted on my website.
He began his speech by declaring, We are excited and
we should be excited to be able to take our agenda farther
and faster than ever before - excited to get things done for
Canadians!
He reminded us that, our plan is not complicated. Were
here to create jobs and lower taxes. Were here to help
Canadian families. And we are here for Canada - a prosperous
Canada, a secure Canada, a strong Canada - a Canada that
truly is, and must remain, the best country in the world.
We have emerged from the worst global economic
downturn since the Great Depression with an economy
that is, make no mistake, the envy of the world. Even as
other countries have stagnated - or worse, Canada has
created nearly 1.1 million jobs and these are overwhelmingly
private-sector, full-time, high-paying jobs. There are still
significant challenges in our labour market but there are also
opportunities.
And as Conservatives, we know Canadians work hard to
make ends meet. Thats why weve lowered taxes for families
and job-creating businesses, by tens of billions of dollars. Its
why we cut the GST, why we introduced Tax-Free Savings
Accounts, why we created The Universal Child Care Benefit,
why we established Income-splitting for our pensioners.
These have been big wins for Canadians and we must never
allow anyone to take them away, he reinforced.
Tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, care givers, transit
users, childrens arts and sports programs. All this adds up to
money in peoples pockets - nearly three and a half thousand
dollars, every year, for the average Canadian family. We have
Prime Minister Harper opens autumn parliamentary session
accomplished all this while keeping our budget on
track, and headed back into balance, on schedule,
as we promised.
When we took office in this era of global
markets, Canada had free trade agreements with
only five other countries. The previous government
had taken us virtually out of the game of trade
negotiations. Now, with free-trade agreements
with 43 countries, Canada will have one of the
greatest trading networks in the world.
This fall we will do more. We will move to
speed the removal of foreign criminals from our
shores. We will end automatic early parole for
serious, repeat offenders. We will make sure that
a life sentence means what its supposed to mean,
prison for life.
Were also here to stand up for Canada in
the world as I said at the outset, not just a
risky world, but an increasingly dangerous one.
Canadians have wanted us to pursue a foreign
policy that is rooted in protecting our interests
and projecting our values not as our critics have
long advocated, to just go along to get along. And
let me tell you, in the councils of the world, there
is no ambiguity as to where Canada stands.

FROM THE OFFICE OF
JASON HALE

Strathmore-Brooks MLA Ja-
son Hale sent a letter outlining
local issues to Richard Starke,
the MLA assigned to conduct a
review on rural health care on
Sept. 25.
In the letter, Hale outlines
the need for expansion of the
Strathmore Hospital, and high-
lights that the Hospital has the
second busiest rural emergency
room in the province.
I am happy to see that this
government is taking rural
health care seriously, as it has
largely been ignored, Hale
states. However, these are not
new issues and I believe that
this is just another report that
is slowing down progress. I
have been advocating for this
expansion since I took ofce in
2012, and it has been on both
the Calgary Health Authoritys
and AHS priority lists since
2006. While I have asked for a
meeting to ensure our issues
are taken seriously, this govern-
ment is already fully aware of
the issue.
Hale will be seeking a meet-
ing with MLA Starke, to discuss
this and other issues in the re-
gion. Attached is a copy of the
letter sent.
Dear Dr. Starke
In light of your recent ap-
pointment to Chair the Review
Panel on Rural Healthcare, I
would like to bring to your
attention some of the issues,
which I have been continuously
advocating for and have raised
to the former Minister of Health.
The Town of Strathmore is
a community of over 12,000
people, with one hospital re-
sponsible for serving a large
surrounding area. Since a 2006
study, authored by the Calgary
Regional Health Authority,
plans for the expansion of the
Strathmore Hospital have been
on the priority list. This has also
made the AHS infrastructure
list as the number two priority
within the Calgary Region, and
despite promises this project
has yet to be undertaken.
As you may now, the Strath-
more Hospital has the second
busiest rural emergency room
in the province. Since construct-
ed in 1985 the hospital has not
been modied or expanded. In
fact the hospital has actually
lost space in 2013 with the clo-
sure of the long-term care wing.
I would appreciate a meeting
with you to discuss this matter
and other health concerns with-
in the Town of Strathmore.

Applications are available for Strathmore FCSSs
2015 grant funding.
The amount being allocated for the year has
not been determined yet, but it has been around
$20,000 to $30,000 over the past couple of years.
The maximum amount a group can apply for is
$5,000 and the reasoning must meet the mandate
of FCSS.
If the programs dont need $5,000 then they
can apply for $2,000, or a $1,000 whatever, said
Catherine Walsh, FCSS coordinator.
Basically FCSSs focus is on preventative initia-
tives, and thats straight across the province, the
communitys design and deliver social programs
that are preventative in nature to promote and en-
hance well being among individuals, families, and
communities. So as long as the programs apply-
ing meet that, that would be a main focus of our
boards decisions.
It also depends on what the community needs.
Its up to the discretion of the board, and the board
is made up of different community members.
In the past Growing Families Opportunity,
Golden Hills School Division, ROE, 5forLife, Step
One Housing, Community Crisis Shelter, and Ac-
credited Supports to the Community, to name a
few, have been granted funds. New projects are
also encouraged to come forward with their ap-
plications.
The application deadline is Oct. 16, and the
form can either be picked up at the FCSS ofce,
or printed from the Town of Strathmore website at
www.strathmore.ca.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
To the Editor
For sometime the needs of the Strathmore Hospital
have been largely ignored by the provincial govern-
ment, and more specically by Alberta Health. This
hospital is 30 years old and was built to serve a popu-
lation much smaller than what we have today.
Clients come from the town, the county, and areas
such as Langdon, Chestermere, Airdrie and the east-
ern edge of Calgary.
M.L.A. Jason Hale took our concerns to the Legis-
lature in late 2013, and these concerns were largely
dismissed by Minister Drysdale and then Health Min-
ister, Fred Horn. This may be the time to again remind
the provincial government of the need for funding to
improve this health facility and to make use of the
empty space at the Strathmore Hospital.
Those people using this facility are urged to write,
e-mail or fax Premier Jim Prentice and Health Minister
Steven Mandel.
This hospital is a vital part of the community and it
serves many of us, whether for blood tests, emergen-
cy services, x-rays, home care, respiratory services,
physiotherapy, or in the area of patient care.
With a new premier and health minister, now is a
good time to alert them to our needs. Perhaps there
is a small light at the end of the tunnel with the an-
nouncement of the expansion of lab services in the
phlebotomy area which will provide two sites for
drawing blood and thus shorten the wait time for cli-
ents needing the service, and the undertaking of yet
another rural health study. We can only hope!

The Land Use Bylaw (LUB),
a lengthy document that many
residents wont face until they
want to build or demolish some-
thing, was brought to council
on Sept. 17 to be rescinded and
the new one adopted.
The bylaw, created in 1989,
had seen over 100 amendments
and didnt include the annexed
lands or other changes that have
happened.
So this reects some new
legislation, some new direc-
tions as well as consolidating
all of the past amendments that
have happened, said Pat Malo-
ney, a contract planner with the
Town of Strathmore. Land Use
Bylaw divides the municipality
into districts. The bylaw does in-
clude the method of making de-
cisions, the density and all the
regulations for development.
It does regulate the subdivi-
sion design standards, the size,
height and area of buildings,
the amount of land to be pro-
vided around the buildings, the
set-backs, the landscaping, the
height, location, maintenance of
fences and walls, establish and
maintenance of parking of load-
ing facilities, design and charac-
ter and appearance of buildings,
location and amount of access
to lots and roads, making sure
that theres appropriate access,
lighting of land, signage, exca-
vation, lling of land, wetlands
and other regulated uses, and
overall density of population.
The goal for the LUB is to
create a document that is cur-
rent, consolidated, relevant,
user friendly, easy-to-read, ex-
ible while setting clear regula-
tions and one that meets all of
the regulatory requirements,
said Maloney.
Some of the changes in the
document include increased
density, the Calgary Metropoli-
tan Plan requires its partners try
to achieve 8-10 units per acre
density.
One recommendation is that
the R3 district now be called
high density district. High den-
sity isnt always an apartment
form, said Maloney, it could be
townhouse, or a stacked town-
house. It doesnt have to be tra-
ditional apartment building.
One of the things adminis-
tration looked at in the down-
town is (in the R3 district) the
overlay you can actually go to
six stories. However, the density
wouldnt have allowed that, so
raising the density to 100 units
per hectare would allow a de-
veloper to build a six story unit
if they want to and if they meet
all of the other requirements.
Parking was another issue
brought forward. Parking for a
one bedroom unit will be one
space, two bedroom 1.5, three
bedroom units will be 1.75 and
then .15 parking per unit for
visitors.
When its development in the
downtown, were saying one
space per unit regardless of size
to encourage walking and
we think there could be shared
parking arrangements in the
downtown, said Maloney.
Councillor Denise Peterson
worries having two bedroom
units with 1.5 parking stalls
could become problematic in
high density areas where trafc
is already an issue.
She would like to see a limit
to the 1.5 parking stalls depen-
dent on the area, something she
thinks should be considered in
areas with limited parking.
Secondary suites have been
listed as a discretionary use in
all single family and duplex res-
ident districts. It will still be dif-
cult for people with an exist-
ing home to turn their basement
into a secondary suite because
of building code regulations;
however, any of the builders
building new homes can ensure
theyre built appropriately at
the time if the buyer so wishes.
They will have to apply for a
development permit for discre-
tionary use when doing so.
Licensed medical marijuana
facilities have also been includ-
ed under the LUB.
This is something that the
federal government has ap-
proved and if you dont stipu-
late where they are not allowed
they could basically be overrid-
den by the federal government
and put anywhere, said Malo-
ney.
Theyre not near schools, or
low density residential and will
be properly signed and fenced.
Councillor Bob Sobol brought
forward questions, concerns
and recommendations about
the proposed bylaw. One of the
guidelines of the LUB states that
liquor stores cannot be within
150 metres of a school, but So-
bol questioned why locations
selling tobacco products are
not included in that. Tobacco
products are sold in many more
places, and means any of the
gas bars backing onto residen-
tial wouldnt be allowed to sell
cigarettes, something the town
doesnt regulate, said Maloney.
Sobol questioned grandfa-
thering the current stores sell-
ing tobacco near schools, stat-
ing it wouldnt affect any of the
present stores.
I agree 100 per cent, but I am
just not sure I have ever seen a
Land Use Bylaw regulate ciga-
rette sales. One of the problems
with that is we do try and en-
courage the reintroduction of
convenience stores back into
residential areas and they all
sell cigarettes, said Maloney.
If we do put it in, and even
if we say its grandfathered, its
not really grandfathered, what
youre making then is youre
making the existing conve-
nience stores and gas bars non-
conforming. If they burnt down
they couldnt sell cigarettes if
they built up again.
It will limit the types of stores
that will come into community
areas because tobacco sales
are an important part to many
convenience store sales. Ma-
loney said she couldnt say it
would stop them from building
or opening, but that it will be
a unique restriction. The possi-
bility of adding that regulation
to the bylaw will be researched
and brought back for councils
consideration.
The LUB was passed with
Peterson voting opposed. She
wanted more time to go over
the document before casting a
favourable vote.
New Land Use Bylaw approved

ATCO signed a three-year partnership with Siksika Nation
Community Cadet Corps on Sept. 23.
The program is a community-based initiative for at-risk
youth and ATCO has come on board to support this youth
plan.
Constable Todd Depagie of the Gleichen RCMP, who is
the commanding ofcer with the Cadet Corps, could not be
more thrilled to see ATCO donate to community organiza-
tion such as this one.
Just for a brief history of the what the Cadet Corps is,
its part of the Alberta Community Cadet Corps group, said
Depagie. The initial one started in 2005 in Hobbema and
they started the program there to combat gang activity.
Gangs were recruiting young kids, the RCMP started up a
cadet program there and started getting the kids into ca-
dets.
Once that was underway they were able to brag hey
were the biggest gang in Hobbema now. They had over 100
cadets show up on a weekly basis and over 1,000 registered
at one point.
The Siksika Nation started their Cadet Corps last year and
really want youth to get involved as it will boost ones self
esteem and discipline.
Cpl. Pascal Richard was doing some of the background
on that. He heard about the Cadet Corp success that hap-
pened up in Hobbema and so he started meeting and part-
nered with Siksika Justice, said Depagie. Then I came in
here just in May of last year and along with Pascal we got
the Cadet Corps up and running.
Depagie has really embraced the kind of support the Sik-
sika community has been able to give to the Cadet Corps.
So far its been great, the support from the community is
outstanding. Were going to be forming our formal society
very shortly kids seem to love it, it gives them a place to
be (it is) just tremendous here, said Depagie.
The age group for Cadet Corps is from 11-17, but if you
are older, there is the possibility of being recruited to be-
come a leader.

REMEMBERING
SUMMER FUN!
It was a beautiful day to sit
outside and relax; the sun was
hot, the air was calm. I could
hear children a few doors
down playing in the yard.
Although I could not see the
action I knew there was water
involved I pictured a pool.
I could hear much splashing
about and I sensed the energy
and enthusiasm of youth.
Needless to say, they were
using their outside voices.
What a perfect summer day!
Then mom came out and rep-
rimanded them. The volume
did go down a notch as did
the energy of the game.
I was thinking, the children
were having such fun as
only children do in a backyard
in summer with water. In a
few short years they may no
longer want to play at home
enjoy them mom. The moment
will pass all too quickly.
I got to thinking how easy it
is for us to get caught up in
the moment. We have to take
an intentional step back and
pause to even get a glimpse at
the big picture. We get caught
up in the day-to-day grind
cooking, cleaning, disci-
plining, guiding, producing
the list goes on. I think that is
one of the blessings of being
a grandparent by position
you are a step back. That step
allows a wider eld of vision
and you are able to see a
bigger picture.
The big picture. It is a blessing
when you are able to see
more than the moment. That
is why a friend that is a good
listener is so wonderful they
are able to listen to your woes
and troubles a step removed
and as such may offer a wise
word.
Friends are not always avail-
able to listen when you need
an ear so it is a great comfort
to know that God, the ultimate
big picture visionary, is always
there, 24/7 to hear whatever
you need to say. Trusting that
God is loving and will be with
you whatever befalls, in the
moment and in the long run, is
a gift worth receiving.

We are geared towards 11 to 17 year
olds, however once they hit 18 we do
still want to retain them as a leader,
said Depagie. If there are people that
are 18 and older that are interested
in the program then we want to train
them as a leader and its a way for them
not only to be involved in youth but to
give back in some way.
When the Cadet Corps meet, you can
see them working on drills, which is
a very important part of the program
because it shows teamwork.
Mike Buxton, General Manger of
Calgarys ATCO Northeast division was
very pleased to be on hand to com-
mence the partnership.
Well we look at the communities
and see where we are the best t and
we want to benet the entire commu-
nity, not just the smaller groups with-
in, said Buxton. We feel this is just a
fantastic group benet (for) the whole
community, so our support is going
where we feel its utilized.
ATCO gets involved with many First
Nation Community Corps and when
the Siksika Cadet corps came about
last year, the decision was easy to get
involved with this one too.
Were supporting Cadet Corps in
other rst nation communities as well
and we became aware of this one that
started up last year, so were like hey lets get involved with
this one too, said Buxton.
It was a nancial donation that went towards the corps
program, but the total could not be released because ATCO
is working with other First Nations Communities with these
donations.
Siksika Cadet Corps meets from 4:30-7 p.m. every Tuesday
at Chief Old Sun Elementary in Siksika Nation.

The Strathmore Cubs are a
group that is taught about their
natural surroundings. The group
got to experience that when they
went on a tour of the Eagle Lake
Nurseries on Sept. 27.
So were here at Eagle Lake
Nurseries to learn a little bit
more about our environment
and some of our local business-
es that deal with environmental
things such as growing trees,
said Allison Israels, Cubs Leader.
One of the key factors of being
a Cub is knowing all about your
environment because you play a
factor whether its a positive one
or a negative one.
The visit to the nursery was all
a bout how trees and plants play
a role in the Cubs lives.
The leaders want to teach the
kids how leave a piece of nature
the way it is without disturbing
its surroundings.
We want to leave an area
the way we left it, said Israels.
So if you walked into a forest,
you dont want to be taking out
stones, animals or any kind of
object because we want to walk
in, appreciate our environment
and then walk and leave it for
somebody else to enjoy.
A normal Cubs meeting can be
different each time as there are
a wide variety of activities that
occur.
Our normal meetings are
anywhere from games to skits,
learning songs, doing art proj-
ects, environmental studies,
said Israels.
Cubs meet on Tuesday nights
from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Quon-
set behind the Strathmore Civic
Centre. The age for Cubs is for
boys and girls ages 7-10.

After nearly 10 years of owning the
local Ford dealership, Byron Smith is
looking forward to a new chapter in
his life.
Even though the auto industry is in
his blood, the 54-year-old Smith sold
his prized company to the Kaizen Au-
tomotive Group, effective Oct. 1.
I would say that it
has been a very fruit-
ful 25 years (in the
automotive business)
it has been heart-
warming, said Smith.
It has allowed me to
pursue goals and ac-
tions that have taken
me to all seven con-
tinents, that have al-
lowed me to embrace
different cultures and geography.
Ive grown and gone on through dif-
ferent phases of my life in the automo-
tive industry.
On his way up in his career, includ-
ing roles as a parts manager and gen-
eral sales manager, Smith purchased
his rst dealership on Sept. 1, 1989 in
Vulcan, before buying the local Ford
dealership on Jan. 15, 2005.
It was a goal of his to own a dealer-
ship before he was 30 years old and
with a lot of hard work, he achieved
that goal a year early.
Im most proud of the professional-
ism (at this dealership), he said. When
a customer comes in here, they can re-
ally feel there is trust and a relation-
ship that will matter to them. We take
pride in how we handle their (needs).
According to Smith, it was tough to
make the decision to nally step aside.
I was approached many, many times
from people to purchase Strathmores
(dealership) from me in the last num-
ber of years alone, Ive had at least 20
people calling me and every time I said
no, said Smith. In the last year, Ive
had to take a really a hard look at it
and recognize that half of my life has
been in this business.
This is the best time to sell a Ford
dealership our prod-
uct is amazing, weve
done the renovation
on the facility, we
have a good reputa-
tion and we have a
very good staff. I had
to look at it pragmati-
cally, I had to look at
it long-term and un-
derstand this oppor-
tunity doesnt come
around everyday.
With his business knowledge and be-
ing in a rare group that has climbed
Mount Everest, Smith will now focus
his time on his motivational speaking
business. He also plans to write a book
in the near future. He is looking for-
ward to spending time with family and
friends, particularly his son, Zach.
According to Smith, while it is tough
to leave, he assures customers that they
will remain in good hands as the staff
assembled at the dealership is second-
to-none. He is condent that the new
ownership group will continue the suc-
cessful tradition he helped create.
Im proud of our growth (as a busi-
ness) in this community, said Smith.
We take a lot of pride in giving back
to the community of Strathmore and
Wheatland County.
Looking for a new challenge

Shelf Genie, an innovative way of
utilizing all the space in your cabinets,
has made its way to Western Canada
and is available to all Strathmore and
area residents.
I was looking into the kind of busi-
ness I wanted to run for myself and I
was looking at all different ones that
were out there. I kind of had my own
set of requirements and in amongst
things as most important to me is to
kind of do things in the way where I
can look at myself in the mirror every
morning and feel good about it, said
Greg Billson, who had spent 30 years
as an IT tech.
A common problem almost every
home owner or renter can relate to is
having shelves that cant be utilized
100 per cent, or ones where you have
to get down on your hands and knees
just to try and pull something out of it.
Cabinets are typically designed to
look really, really nice but theyre not
necessarily designed to function really
well and so normally the insides are
maybe a bit bare, said Billson.
Shelf Genie provides almost the best
of both worlds because they can look
nice on the outside but actually also
function on the inside too.
Its also less physically straining.
The interesting thing is quite of-
ten they get more space rather than
less, said Billson. The reason for that
is when we kind of look in a typical
pantry what youre going to nd is a
whole pile of air that isnt doing any-
thing. The reason that air is there not
doing anything is because you need to
be able to reach in, youve got to have
space for your hands to get in and out.

It was a surreal moment for Carse-
land native Jordan Ostrom on Sept. 25
when she found out she was the win-
ner of the ATB All Albertan Song Writ-
ing Contest. Ostrom, who goes by the
name Sykamore professionally, won
$10,000 with the title,
with her track Heaven
in the Pines.
It was pretty surre-
al when we found out
that I was rst, said
Ostrom.
I was with my
mom in a hotel in
Nashville and we had
to tune in to CKUA on
the internet, I had to
go to the website, it
was a total nail-biter.
I was in the Top 2 with T. Buckley and
the online voting was really close so it
was impossible to tell who was going
to win.
This was the fourth year for the con-
test, which encourages local songwrit-
ers to write and record a song about
Alberta and being an Albertan.
Ostrom was at Winos in downtown
Calgary with her manager when one
of his friends, who had joined them,
mentioned the ATB contest after nd-
ing out she writes her own music.
That was about a month before
the deadline. She had then forgotten
about it until one day she was home
and it crossed her mind. She thought
maybe she would try
and write something,
what did she have
to lose? After mak-
ing sure the deadline
hadnt passed, she got
to work.
So I wrote the song
on the Friday, and
then I went to my
parents house and re-
corded it in my closet
on the Saturday and I
sent it off to be mixed
and mastered. I had the nal product
back to me the afternoon that I was
supposed to submit it, said Ostrom.
The idea for the song and the title
came from a driving trip she had taken
to Seattle in May with a friend.
I just remember that glorious mo-
ment when we crossed over the bor-
der back into Canada and I was just
so happy. It was partly because of
technology, (not relying on WiFi any-
more) but it was also because theres
something about crossing the border,
the landscape just gets that much more
beautiful. I dont know what it is, may-
be its just familiarity or whatever but
my friend and I were just really excit-
ed, said Ostrom.
On the way back to Calgary they
stopped in Longview, pulling over to
take pictures, and she remembered the
phrase, Heaven in the pines running
through her head. She had logged it
away thinking it would be useful for a
song one day. That trip and the memo-
ry of it is what inspired the song, said
Ostrom. Heaven in the Pines is about
that feeling and excitement you get
when youve been outside of Alberta,
or Canada, missing it, and you know
youre getting close to home.
The money Ostrom won will be used
towards her career for things like re-
cording, tours and other expenses
as they come down the road. If you
havent heard anything by Sykamore,
be sure to check out her Facebook
page where you can nds links to her
songs, including Heaven in the Pines.
Local musician Sykamore wins $10K
which means things can be spaced just
far enough apart that it can all t with
just the right amount of space in be-
tween because you dont need space
to put your hand in any more, you can
just slide the drawer out.
Barb Fath, a Strathmore resident, and
her husband moved into a home in the
Ranch and found they had two blind
corner cabinets that they were having
problems using.
My husband and I, we looked every-
where to gure out how we could put
something in ourselves, and then we
went to one of the home shows and
met Greg and he just had the perfect
solution for it, said Fath.

The Wheatland Warriors put in two
very honest road efforts this past week-
end.
They punished a weaker opponent
in the Crowsnest Pass 12-1 on Sept. 27,
but the next day, they were up against
a much stiffer opponent in Cranbrook,
where they lost 6-2.
The game in Crowsnest Pass saw
the local double-A bantam team play a
full 60 minutes, but the focus lacked at
points in the game because of the blow-
out.
Denitely a weaker team, we kind of
came out at footed for the rst period.
(We) werent getting many pucks out
and not generating much offense. After
that, we talked to the guys after the rst
period and they came out and the in-
tensity was up and started scoring goals
because of it , said Warriors assistant
coach Justin Fraser.
The coaches preached that even
though it was a weaker team to keep
pushing and dont stand back.
I just told them because its a weak-
er team, you dont want to take a night
off, said Fraser. It just creates bad hab-
its for the guys and you can get some

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings
hosted the Stettler Lightning in their
home opener on Sept. 27 at the
Strathmore Family Centre. On hand
for the ceremonial faceoff were Stet-
tler Lightning Captain Mark Dietz (l-
r), Strathmore Minor Hockey League
President Blair Wilson, Strathmore
Mayor Michael Ell and Strathmore
Wheatland Kings Captain Blake Bish-
op. The Kings defeated Stettler 8-3,
improving to 3-0 on the season.
The excitement was felt in the crowd
right from the player introduction to
the nal buzzer.
Head coach Jeremy Blumes really
liked what he saw from his team, but
admits there were times where the fo-
cus was too much on the extra circu-
lars on the ice.
For the rst home game I thought
for the rst period we were focused
and I thought the second period we
got distracted with things that were
out of our control, said Blumes. I
think in the third period we got closer
to what were capable of.
The Wheatland Kings jumped out to
the early lead just 1:14 into the game
when Matt Thomson opens the scor-
ing. Then a short time later, Sebastian
Turgeon made it 2-0 and then Stettler
was able to get one back. Local prod-
ucts Lucas Jones and Cody Willis add-
ed back-to-back markers and Jay Man-
ning added another one to make it 5-1
Kings at the end of one.
Blumes and his staff had talked to
the team at the intermissions about the
things that they can control and things
that are out of their grasps and for the
leaders to step up and settle the team
down
We talked about just focusing on
things we can control versus things we
cant, said Blumes. I also think our
leadership group did a good job of set-
tling those guys down and Lucas is a
big part of that.
The Kings did get into some penal-
ty trouble including killing off a sev-
en-minute penalty in the middle frame.
It was huge, I thought we did a
good job working on this in practice
on special teams and the boys did a
good job on stopping and starting, get-
ting their sticks in the lane and your
best penalty killer is always youre
goalie, said Blumes.
He also added that it was encourag-
ing to see the team cheer each other
on despite all the penalties.
Stettler was able to get two in in
the second before the Kings Brett Du-
maine replied with a shorthanded tal-
ly, which made it 6-3 Kings after two.
In the third, Justin Kostiuk notched a
power play marker and Willis was able
to wrap up the scoring with his second
of the night.
Strathmore product Lucas Jones
could not have been more excited to
play in front of the hometown crowd,
as it added some extra motivation to
play well.
Im from Strathmore and this is
my rst home game in two and a half
years since midget, said Jones. Its
denitely very exciting and you could
feel it around the town the last couple
of weeks. Its even nicer to pull out the
two points against a team like Stettler.
Jones believed that the team motiva-
tion was from the home crowd.
Its unreal and I really think it
helped us pull out the two points, he
said I think our rst period was great
and that also came from our home
opener, from the fans too being there
for us.
The next game for the Kings is Fri-
day, Oct. 3, when they take on the
Mountainview Colts on the road be-
fore their next home game on Oct. 4
(8 p.m.) versus the Okotoks Bisons at
the Strathmore Family Centre.
points do it while you can because
every team is not going to be like that.
Everybody after the rst period picked
up their game.
Hassan Akl had three goals and Jared
Farmer had two goals. Singles were add-
ed by Connor Bertamini, Jayden Hen-
dricks, Majid Kaddoura, Ryan Conroy,
Tarun Fizer, Jase Westgard and Tyler
Skehar.
On Sunday in Cranbrook, it was a
whole different game as the team fell
behind and could not climb back.
The effort was there as opposed to
Saturday. The guys came out ying Sun-
day, we had a rst good shift from every-
body, said Fraser. I kind of thought we
had a period off in the second and they
ended getting up 4-0. After that, it was
hard for the guys to battle back. You
cant expect to give up six if youre go-
ing to win against those guys.
Jordan Hansen and Jayden Hendricks
supplied the goals in Cranbrook.
Next up for the Warriors is a road
game in Airdrie against the Lightning on
Oct. 4 (1:45 p.m.).
The Wheatland Braves opened up
their season with a 4-2 win over the
Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sept. 28. The
local double-A peewee team will have
their home opener on Oct. 4 (1:30 p.m.)
versus Red Deer at the Strathmore Fam-
ily Centre.
The Wheatland Chiefs, the local dou-
ble-A midget team, will open their sea-
son in Cranbrook on Oct. 4 before play-
ing in Lethbridge on Oct. 5.

The Strathmore Spartans high school
junior varsity girls showed some signs
of improvement in their home tourna-
ment on Sept. 26-27.
Volleyball coach Carrie Westgard was
thrilled to see her team, who were split
into a Pool A and Pool B team, go out
on the court and compete and play to
the systems.
The Pool A team placed eighth and
the B team nished fourth.
The Pool A (team) played really
well, it didnt show on paper because
they came eighth, but their improve-
ment of learning the game was so im-
mense that there was not a thought at
where they nished, it was such a good
weekend, said Westgard.
This was the girls second tourna-
ment this season and Westgard was
able to sit back and observe more rath-
er than telling the players what to do
after every play.
This is there second tournament
this year, said Westgard. I think we
had one practice before the rst tour-
nament essentially this is their rst
real tournament where theyve had
some practices in and communication
of what they are supposed to do. Im
so happy with how they played, it was
really good.
The B team was able to progress
through each match with positive at-
titudes and played a total team effort.
The B team were essentially super
positive and really fought through ev-
ery point and lot of communication,
said Westgard. Their strengths was
that they were playing as a real unit.
The A team had tougher competition,
but was able to sustain condence with
each game.
The A team started off a little slow,
but I think it was because they had an
extra player and they took a little lon-
ger to gel, said Westgard. They played
such tough competition that it was a
little harder to see for them it was
a good game even though maybe they
were being beat.
Their big adjustment was that you
do not have to win, you have to fo-
cus on how youre playing. Once they
gured out how to do that, then they
were playing really well. Fundamental-
ly, they were in their positions and they
were making the right choices.
The highlights for the split teams
were their overall performance on the
court and sticking to the basics.
We didnt focus on the outcome of
the tournament, we wanted to focus on
how we played and how we learned
our positions, said Westgard.
Westgard believes that her team will
have quicker starts and later in the sea-
son will be a contender for zones.
The team will be united once again
in Brooks this upcoming weekend,
Oct. 3-4, for another tournament.

The Holy Cross Col-
legiate Hawks boys and
girls junior A volleyball
teams showed strong
team performances at
their home tournaments
on Sept. 26-27.
First-year girls coach
Elise Tanguay thought
her team showed signs
of strong teamwork on
the court.
I think it went re-
ally well and it was re-
ally nice to see the dy-
namic build in the group
because it really was
their rst time playing a
bunch of games togeth-
er. It was nice to see the
evolution from the rst
game to the last game,
said Tanguay.
We didnt win any
games, but we did win
some sets.
Even though the girl
Hawks did not win any
games, the attitude was
positive throughout and
that is what got them
through most of the
games.
I think for me, espe-
cially with younger girls
its like you need to keep
that attitude positive, as
soon as it goes down on
the court then it only
takes that one person to
have a negative attitude
and then everyone goes
down. So if you miss
that serve then get out
of there with a silly face
and shake it off, said
Tanguay.
The tournament was a
great bonding time for
the team and to make
new friendships.
Our biggest challenge
was working together as
a team instead of individ-
uals on the court. I feel
like were getting there
after this tournament,
they have a way bet-
ter friendship between
them, said Tanguay.
The girls closest game
was the consolation
game where virtually all
their sets were tied.
It was the girls rst
tournament of the sea-
son and they are excited
for the next one in Vul-
can this weekend on
Oct. 3-4.
As for the boys, signs
of leadership and com-
munication were evident
on the playing eld.
The boys did a great
job at learning how to
communicate and there
is some real leadership
on the team and the
team denitely knows
where its going,said
Josh Jalbert, HCC athletic
director.
I know they could
have hit the ball bet-
ter during the weekend
and be more aggressive
when theyre playing
and not sit back and wait
as much. They did very
well and they nished
second and played some
tough competition. This
experience will denite-
ly help them along the
rest of the way.
They lost to Bert
Church of Airdrie in the
nal.

The UFA Bisons split a pair of games
to open the 2014-2015 season this past
weekend at the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre.
The local triple-A midget team edged
the Calgary Royals 5-3 in their home
opener on Sept. 26. The nearly sold-out
crowd was treated to a gritty, entertain-
ing performance, as the Bisons were
able to use their size to produce offence
and push back at Royals with physical
play.
Head coach Dan MacDonald was
pleased with his teams rst win of the
season and admits it was a step in the
right direction in growing as players
The players worked real hard since
weve started here right from the begin-
ning, said MacDonald. We were hop-
ing thats what wed kind of get is a
hardworking effort and I thought thats
what we had and when you work hard,
good things happen.
He thought puck possession would be
a work in progress as the passes were
not as sharp as they could be.
I dont think its where we want to be
obviously, it wasnt as nesse with puck
the way we like but effort was rst so I
was happy with that, said MacDonald.
The keys to victory was that the Bi-
sons were able to drive the net effective-
ly and putting pressure on the Royals.
Well the biggest thing is that we want
to drive the net real hard and pressure
them. Thats the type of game we want
to play and I thought we did that re-
ally well all periods, said MacDonald.
We had a couple of let downs, where
three penalties in a row will do that (to
you), where you cant pressure. Thats
just a part of growing up in this league
because you got to be careful what you
do.
The Bisons did take some penalties,
but were fortunate to kill them at crucial
parts of the game, including a double
minor in the later stages.
(We) seemed to take penalties when
we pressured the puck and sometimes I
think that your going hard on the puck
so right now were not gonna worry
too much, said MacDonald.
On Friday night, Cameron Shorrock
and Austin Cameron led the way of-
fensively with two goals apiece, while
Hayden Gary added a single goal to
round out the scoring.
On Sunday afternoon versus Red
Deer, the game was tight and neither
team was giving up any room, but the
Bisons ended up on the wrong end of
a 4-2 defeat.
What we saw with Red Deer is a team
that we can compete against certainly in
the year. We have a few things to work
on and we think that when we work on
those things, were going to be a better
team, said Dave Attwood, Bisons assis-
tant coach.
The Bisons are hoping for a different
outcome against Red Deer later in the
season, but once some more systems are
in place, they will be ready next time.
We have a really good group of boys
that are working really hard and once
we have some time to teach them what
we want to teach them, its going to look
a lot different we hope, said Attwood
The loss was not a real indication of
how the game went for the Bisons, as
they just could not capitalize on their
chances.
It was pretty close because we looked
at the shots on goal, both goalies played
really well and had some chances in
there that we didnt bury and I think

The UFA Bisons split a pair of games
to open the 2014-2015 season this past
weekend at the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre.
The local triple-A midget team edged
the Calgary Royals 5-3 in their home
opener on Sept. 26. The nearly sold-out
crowd was treated to a gritty, entertain-
ing performance, as the Bisons were
able to use their size to produce offence
and push back at Royals with physical
play.
Head coach Dan MacDonald was
pleased with his teams rst win of the
season and admits it was a step in the
right direction in growing as players
The players worked real hard since
weve started here right from the begin-
ning, said MacDonald. We were hop-
ing thats what wed kind of get is a
hardworking effort and I thought thats
what we had and when you work hard,
good things happen.
He thought puck possession would be
a work in progress as the passes were
not as sharp as they could be.
I dont think its where we want to be
obviously, it wasnt as nesse with puck
the way we like but effort was rst so I
was happy with that, said MacDonald.
The keys to victory was that the Bi-
sons were able to drive the net effective-
ly and putting pressure on the Royals.
Well the biggest thing is that we want
to drive the net real hard and pressure
them. Thats the type of game we want
to play and I thought we did that re-
ally well all periods, said MacDonald.
We had a couple of let downs, where
three penalties in a row will do that (to
you), where you cant pressure. Thats
just a part of growing up in this league
because you got to be careful what you
do.
The Bisons did take some penalties,
but were fortunate to kill them at crucial
parts of the game, including a double
minor in the later stages.
(We) seemed to take penalties when
we pressured the puck and sometimes I
think that your going hard on the puck
so right now were not gonna worry
too much, said MacDonald.
On Friday night, Cameron Shorrock

Its been a year since you went away
Still feels like it was yesterday
Tere is still a big emptiness in my heart
Lots of days I still fall apart
Youre always in my thoughts
I cherish all the memories that we had together.
Its so hard to put into words
How much I miss your laughter,
Your smile, your love, your strength,
And thoughtfulness.
We miss you always and love you forever.

Anyone looking to get involved with
the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games is be-
ing encouraged to sign up now for a
chance to do so.
There are a number of different activi-
ties that those interested can take part
in.
They range from Scrabble and Eu-
chre and a lot of the indoor games to
hockey and curling and some of the
winter sports as well. Its a good variety
of options available, said Joss Binns, ac-
tivity director for Strathmores 55 Plus
Summer Games coming in 2015.
Generally were trying to increase the
awareness and participation of winter
and summer sports in this Golden Hills,
County of Wheatland area because we
havent had great participation in these
activities in previous years, so were just
trying to encourage everybody to give
it a go.
Binns is personally hoping to qualify
for the Winter Games, but he is also
attending to see how things are orga-
nized since both the summer and winter
games are run under the same head or-
ganization.
The goal behind Alberta 55 Plus is to
encourage people to either get active
and/or continue to participate in life
long sports.
Its an opportunity to get a low-cost
activity, because it doesnt cost you very
much to enter the games. You just have
to have a Plus 55 membership for $30
and then you get all of your food and ac-
commodations paid for when you qual-
ify for the Lethbridge Winter Games. So
its a fairly cheap way to participate in
those winter sports that are offered,
said Binns.
The rst opportunity to play is Oct.
25 in Drumheller for pool-snooker. Reg-
istration for each event must happen a
minimum of seven days before the event.
For the Oct. 25 event you can register by
calling Linda Traquir at 403-823-8460, or
