    THE PROBLEM
    When constructing bridge abutments, impermeable soil layers can
    trap water and create hydrostatic pressure against the structural
    wall. Saturated soils, excessive water run-off from road surfaces
    and freeze / thaw cycles in colder climates make proper drainage
    a critical design consideration. Improper drainage design can
    compromise the structure by creating leaks that require
    expensive repairs and/or maintenance.
    When proper drainage is unavailable, the wall must be designed
    to handle heavier loads, resulting in higher construction costs.
    Vertical drainage using stone is not a practical or efficient long
    term solution due to installation challenges and long term soil
    fines that can eventually clog the stone.

    THE SOLUTION
