Message from AFA General Secretariat
AFA is pleased to issue Health, Safety and Environment
Performance Indicators (HSE KPI) to all its members. AFA
would like to convey its thanks and appreciation to AFA HSE
Committee Members for their efort and support and special
thanks to Mr. Mejbel Al Shammeri HSE Manager PIC-
Kuwait for his valuable eforts in preparing and fnalizing this
valuable booklet.
Introduction
Based on AFA HSE committee commitment towards HSE and
for the sake of continuous improvement of HSE performance
among Arab fertilizers companies by applying stricter control
on all HSE activities in line with international HSE best practice,
the committee decide to develop unifed HSE KPIs for AFA
members, this will help us to know the current performance
of AFA members, what can we do to improve and how we can
prevent danger from our employees and assets.

Defnitions
SAFETY FOR THE WORK PLACE KPLs
1. Fatalities
Fatality is the death of accompany employee, contractor
or visitor due to industrial accident happened within the
premises of the company.
2. Industrial Disabling Incidents IDIs
Industrial Disabling Incidents work related incidents or illness
that prevent the employee or contractor to do his work the
day after the incident / injury
3. Industrial Non-Disabling Incidents INDIs
Industrial Non-Disabling Incidents are accidents/injury that
do not result in any lost work days, this includes frst aid,
medical treatment and restrict work accidents.
4. Number of site inspections (audits) conducted
Number of safety audits conducted in the plant to indicate
unsafe conditions UC, unsafe acts UA, housekeeping HK and
safety role violations SRV per planned number within one
month.
5. Number of near-misses
Incidents causing no personal injury, material loss, equipment
damage or production loss

6. Occupational Injury
An injury or disease resulted from exposure to the work
environment, like hazard materials, chemicals, noise,
vibration ..etc that can cause short or long disability .
7. Company Employee
Any employed person and on the pay roll of the company
including corporate and management personnel.
8. Contractor
An individual or organization performing work for the
company including long term and short term contracts or
subcontracts.

Environmental KPIs
9. Spills
Any containment loss to fresh water, sea or land of process
material, oil, hazardous chemicals or fnished products more
than one barrel.
10. Hazardous waste
Any waste substance that can cause present or future threat
for human , wild life or environment .
11. Non Hazardous waste
Any waste resulted from industrial process or civil activities
which have no harm for environment, it can be recycled.
12. Medical waste
Any waste generated from the medical center due to medical
treatment of employees, diagnosis of diseases or annual
medical checks.
13. Emissions of gases
Emissions of CO, CO
2
, Sox, NOx, H

S and VOC to atmosphere
that exceeds EPA limits.
14. Effuent water
Waste water resulted from plant process, have trace of metals,
treated and released into the sea.

Benchmarking the organizations safety performance on
semi-annual or annual basis with other organizations of
similar processes and products.
Percentage of materials used that are recycled input
materials. The recycled materials and wastes are used in
the production of potash, nitrogen or phosphate products,
except recovered sulfur (a byproduct of oil refning or
natural gas production) in producing phosphoric acid.
Total energy saved due to conservation and efciency
