1. Alchemy is protosains that combines elements of chemistry, physics, astrology, art,
semiotics, metallurgy, medicine, mysticism, and religion. Alchemy can be regarded as a
forerunner of modern chemistry prior to the formulation of the scientific method.
The difference is alchemy relies much on the spiritual connection to the earth and
minerals and has a philosophical basis, while modern science is much more logical and
based on facts.
2. I dont know
3. Are there any famous alchemists you know ?

Antoine Laurent Lavoisier
Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac
Irving Langmuir
4. Read the following article. What do the words in bold mean ?
Medieval : the time when the ancient
Elements : class of atoms which have the same number protons in the nucleus.
Precious metals : precious metals are metals that are resistant to corrosion and oxidation. Examples of
precious metals are gold, silver and platinum.
To cure : make recovery.
Prolong : something to make into a short to long
Seeking to : an effort made
Hydrochloric acid : Hydrochloric acid is a substance or solution is highly corrosive, which is kind of a
strong acid hydrogen chloride (HCI).
Nitric acid : Nitric acid is a corrosive liquid toxic acid and colorless which is used to make fertilizers, dyes,
explosives, and other chemicals.
Potash : Potassium carbonate is a monoclinic, a white powder, small round or granular crystal ball. It is
used as a raw material in the manufacture of electrical tube
Sodium carbonate : white crystalline water-soluble, which is widely used in the food industry / biscuit
(as baking powder).
Arsenic : known toxic metalloid material and has three forms alotropik; yellow, black, and gray.
Antimony : is a toxic chemical element with symbol Sb and atomic number 51. A lustrous gray metalloid,
it is found in nature mainly as the sulfide mineral stibnite (Sb

).
Bismuth : a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Bi and atomic number 83. With
crystalline trivalent metal has chemical properties similar to arsenic and antimony.
Laid the foundation : basic theory.
5. Philosophers stone : The philosopher's stone (Latin: lapis philosophorum) is a legendary
alchemical substance said to be capable of turning base metals (lead, for example) into gold
(chrysopoeia) or silver. It was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for
rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. For many centuries, it was the most sought-
after goal in Western alchemy. The philosopher's stone was the central symbol of the mystical
terminology of alchemy, symbolizing perfection at its finest, enlightenment, and heavenly bliss.
Efforts to discover the philosopher's stone were known as the Magnum Opus.
Elixir of immortality : is a legendary/mythical potion, or drink, that grants the drinker eternal
life and/or eternal youth. Many practitioners of alchemy pursued it. The elixir of life was also
said to be able to create life. It is related to the myths of Thoth, and Hermes Trismegistus, all of
whom in various tales are said to have drunk "the white drops" (liquid gold) and thus achieved
immortality. It is mentioned in one of the Nag Hammadi texts.
[1]
As water is a very important
resource in our lives it is known as the elixir of life.
Turn leads into gold : transmutation of lead ((atomic number 82) into gold (atomic number
79).
6. Turning base metals into gold or silver precious metal and creating drugs - panacea
7. To know the composition of matter: to learn what elements are present in a given sample
and the percentage setting. This type of research is known as analysis. The second
objective is to create new substances that mimic or are different from those found in
nature.

b. Earth - Alchemy Symbol

c. Fire - Alchemy Symbol

d. Mercury - Alchemical Symbol

e. Silver Alchemy Symbol

f. Tin Alchemy Symbol

9. Elements in midlle ages there were only four elements: fire, earth, water, air.
In midlle ages the relative atomic mass is used to distinguish one element from another
element. while the current list is based on the elements of an atomic electron
configuration for the element. Elements with similar electron configurations have
chemical properties that are similar. So nothing to do with the nature of the elements
electron configuration.
10. Nowadays we used periodic table which arranged by atomic number and aphabetical
symbol. For Example, Mg for Magnesium, Ar for Argon, Xe for Xenon, etc. There is 113
elements on periodic tab
