The children fixed their eyes upon Anne. Anne gazed back, feeling helpless.
"Now, children," began Miss Enderby firly, "you are !ery, !ery lucky this ter

Anne ga!e a watery sile. The $hildren%s faces were uno!ed.
"Miss #acey," repeated Miss Enderby with ephasis. "$an you say that&"
"Miss #acey," chorused the class obediently.
"'erhaps you could say %(ood orning% to your new teacher&" suggested Miss
Enderby in an iperati!e tone.
"(ood orning. Miss #acey," cae the polite chorus.
"(ood orning, children," responded Anne in a !oice which bore no reseblance to
her own.
Miss Enderby otioned to the children to take their seats. ") should gi!e out paper and
coloured pencils," said Miss Enderby, "as soon as you%!e called the register

said the headistress. ".%you hear e, Arnold&"
The little boy addressed, who had been crossing and uncrossing his eyes in an ugly
anner for the en/oyent of his neighbours, looked suitably crest0fallen.
")f ) were you, ) should keep an eye on that boy," urured Miss Enderby. "1roken

Anne looked with fresh interest at Arnold and thought he looked 5uite different fro
what Miss Enderby said about hi. 6ar too innocent and apple0cheeked to ha!e such a
record. 1ut e!en as she looked, she saw his pink face express his scorn of Miss Enderby
who was gi!ing her final essages to the new teacher.
"1reak

-he ade her way to the door and waited before it, eyebrows raised as she turned her
gaze upon the children. They gazed back in soe bewilderent
")s no one going to reeber his anners&" asked Miss Enderby.
9ith a ner!ous start Anne hastened forward to the door, but was wa!ed back by a
o!eent of her headistress%s hand. A dozen or ore children ade a rush to open the
door. A freckled girl with two skinny red plaits was the first to drag open the door. -he

Break is not generally used in uni!ersities and colleges, except in the sense of the 70 to ">0inute break between one class
and the next, because there are usually no other breaks besides the lunch hour.
"Thank you, dear, thank you," said Miss Enderby and sailed a/estically into the
corridor. There cae a faint sigh of relief as the door closed behind her, and the forty0six
tongues which had so far kept unnaturally silent began to wag cheerfully. Anne watched
this change with soe disay. -he reebered with sudden relief soe ad!ice gi!en her
at college in /ust such a situation.
"-tand 5uite still, be 5uite cal, and gradually the children will becoe conscious that
you are waiting. Ne!er, ne!er attept to shout the down."
-o Anne stood her ground waiting for the chattering to subside. 1ut the noise grew in
!olue as con!ersations becae ore aniated. One or two children ran across the
roo to see their distant friends. Two little boys attacked each other. A child with
birthday cards was displaying their beauties to an adiring crowd round her desk. Arnold
had reo!ed his blue pullo!er and was attepting to pull his shirt o!er his head, in order
to show his friends a scar on his shoulderblade.
Aidst growing chaos Anne reained silent. -he looked at the clock which /erked
fro one inute to the next and decided to let it leap once ore before she abandoned
hope.
One crub of cofort, if cofort it could be called, reained with her. This was an
outburst of natural high spirits. 8er presence, she noted, eant nothing at all to the.
A chair fell o!er, soeone yelped with pain, there was a burst of laughter, and Anne
saw the clock /up to another inute. Anne ad!anced into action.
"To your desks4" she roared, "And 5uickly4"
9ith a pleasurable shock she saw her words obeyed. 9ithin a inute order had
returned. Pefreshed by the break the children turned attenti!e eyes upon her.
Anne%s self0estee crept back.
