Assignment observation intership

I went to visit some lessons : piano and clarinet for children. I came to the music school
around 18.00 and it was a nice day. The door was already open, so I just came without
problems. I analysed the building: a ground floor where it was a big table with some
chairs where people were sit down reading or waiting for the net lesson. There was
also some coffee machine and fresh machine as well. In the same floor there was also
the reception room. !y first impression about the building was o". There was silent
and everything in order. #o noise, no dirty. !aybe, a bit small but it was comfortable at
the same time. I went up by weed stairs and I arrived to the first floor. I could notice the
floor was not stable and everybody was ma"ing noise while they wal"ed. !aybe
something it would be necessary to change. The doors were not good enough because I
could hear all the instruments noise from the outside of the room. $o I thin" it%s not
suitable enough for music education in this aspect. &owever the space is used well, the
rooms are not big but either small. There is space enough for the piano instruments and
for some people wor"ing together at the same time. To conclude I would say that it%s a
bit old building but not in bad conditions. 'nyway, I would change some things as I said
before to improve the general behaviour of the building.
(hen I came to the first lesson and also to the second the teacher received me very
enthusiastic. )oth women were good dressed and they were good loo"ing.
*nce I was listening to the first lesson, I observed the teacher carefully. I got fied
because of her big patience with the children. (hile the little girl was playing a nice
song, the teacher was writing down about the progress and also about the problems the
girl had had. (hen the girl finished, the teacher loo"ed enthusiastic and happy. 'lways
in a formal way she tal"ed to the pupils eplaining everything so I could appreciate she
was self+assured with herself. ,verything she did was with patience and totally relaed.
#o stress at all, no authoritarian words, but really concentrate on the pupils wor".
Tal"ing about the pupil, there was three of them, but I will tal" about the best one. $he
was around eleven years old. )efore she played she was already motivated, she really
wanted to play in the lesson. I saw she was talented in a way because she played fast,
and with no many problems. 'lso she was able to listen to the music and to follow the
melody lines. $he was really motivated. (hen she finished playing, the teacher smiled
to her. I could see the relation they had was really nice.
'fter that, the teacher started eplaining about some things that the pupil forgot about
the piece. $ome dynamics, some fingering, about the pedal, about rhythms-
The pupil was listening carefully to the teacher and understanding everything. Then she
played again and was able to correct some mista"es. &owever the rhythm was still not
clear for her. The teacher immediately had something to fi.. Then she suggested
something to the other children to help the pupil: the children clapped with their hands
when the difficult rhythm appeared on the left hand of the pupil. /inally, a problem
solved.
These are some eamples about what I saw during the lesson.
The lesson starts with some tal"ing going on. The teacher as"s some funny 0uestions to
the pupil before start wor"ing.
/irst, they start wor"ing with some theoretical 1name of the notes, scales2. $econd, the
sing together the song they are going to play. Third, the sit on the piano and the teacher
give the pulse. The children are already playing. 'fter that, some 0uestions from the
teacher but also from the pupils side. The teacher clarifies everything to them. This has
been the structure of the lesson. In my opinion, is 0uite good because they practise and
learn different things in a different ways. 'lso the children have fun and don%t get bored.
There is space for many different things.
I couldn%t feel stressed in any moment or hearing noise from the children or getting bad
feelings. The behaviour was perfect. #ot silence but not noise.
The relation between the children and the teacher was really good. The pupils enjoy
during the lesson and the also learn from each other. If one of them does a mista"e the
other already "nows where is the false accent or which note is not right.

'lso because the play together or separate but in the same lesson they seem to be more
stimulated, they really want to ma"e music and to have fun together so I thin" it%s an
important step to start learning music.
In general, my impression of the lesson has been good. $tructured, in order, good
behaviour, good feelings, there was place to wor" and place to have fun, time to play
and time to listen advices or suggestions between them.
