INTRODUCTION
On the job training or OJT is one method by which students is given a chance to
apply the theories and computations that they have learned from the school. It also
helps the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by performing in actual work
setting. Colleges and universities require their students to undergo such training within a
specific number of hours as part of the curriculum.
For the students, an OJT or internship program provides opportunities to go
through the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipments and
documents. In effect, the workplace becomes a development venue for a student
trainee to learn more about his chosen field and practice what he has learn from
academy.
On the other hand, an effective OJT program also benefits the companies who
accept trainees. First OJT or intern provides additional manpower for a lesser labor cost
than a regular employee. Most of them are all eager to learn the ropes so chances are
high that they will cooperate.
Employers can use this internship strategy as a method in recruiting new
employees. Since the trainer or the supervisor can follow the trainees progress, he can
gauge based on performance, behavior and attitude if the trainee will make a good
recruit after the completion of his internship.

2

OJTs can bring fresh ideas into the organization. Given the opportunity to speak
their minds freely and without fear, they maybe able to contribute significantly in
brainstorming sessions or research and eventually help improve the organizations
productivity. While training the interns, employers are in fact also teaching their
employees to process of guiding the trainees stretches their patience, develops
teaching skills and makes them more sensitive to the needs and mind set of the
younger generation. The course of supervision also teaches them how to share what
they know and be receptive to questions. Hence, the internship also becomes an
avenue in training for future managers of the company.
Accommodating on-the-job trainees can truly be beneficial not only to the
trainees but also to the companies that provide opportunities for this type of learning.
There is wisdom in the front lines. Such training can be an investment that will be
valuable to the company later on. This is also why trainees should take their internship
seriously as it can become a powerful tool and possibly even a source of
recommendation when they take that big lift from being students to career
professionals.

CHAPTER I
PERSONAL PROFILE
This chapter presents the personal data of the student-trainee highlighting the
college of her origin, as well as her field of specialization.
CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE
The Camarines Norte State College has originated from the Camarines Norte High
School which was established in 1920. On June 23, 1973 Parliamentary Bill No. 2378 was
approved and signed into law converting Camarines Norte High School to Camarines Norte
National High School (CNNHS). It was on the 23rd day of July 1991 when former Congressman
Renato M. Unico introduced House Bill No. 31647 in the House of Representatives during its
fifth Regular Session. After it was finally passed by the Senate and the House of
Representatives, the Bill was signed into Law by Former President Corazon C. Aquino on April
2, 1992 as Republic Act No. 7352 also known as "An Act Converting the present Camarines
Norte National High School in Municipality of Daet into a State College to be known as the
Camarines Norte State College integrating for the purpose the Aba&ntildeo Pilot Elementary
School in Daet, Mercedes School of Fisheries in Mercedes, Camarines Norte National
Agricultural School in Labo, and the Camarines Norte School of Arts and Trades in Jose
Panganiban all in the province of Camarines Norte and appropriating funds thereof."
The institutions task is primarily to provide higher technological and professional
instruction and training in the fields of economics, agriculture, health, engineering,
education, management, finance, accounting, forest research and conservation,
business and public administration as well as short-term technical and vocational

4

courses, provide and promote research and extension services, advance studies and
progressive leadership in all areas of discipline and responsibilities.
The Camarines Norte National High School, now Main Campus, has an area of
8.4213 hectares within which includes the Eco Athletic Field. It houses the
administration, College of Education, College of Administration, Graduate School,
College of Arts and Sciences, Information Technology Center, College of Engineering
and Industrial Technology, Extension and the Main Library.
The former Camarines Norte School of Arts and Trade, now the College of
Engineering and Industrial Technology located in the town proper of Jose Panganiban,
also of this province was organized during the early part of 1970 to develop manpower
skills and to produce highly trained professionals in the fields of arts and trades. It has a
land area of 8.8960 hectares.
By virtue of Republic Act 7352, the governing body of the Camarines Norte State
College was vested in the Board of Regents chaired by Hon. Armand V. Fabella, the
Secretary of Education, Culture and Sports. The chair was represented by DECS
regional Director for NCR Dr. Nilo S. Rosas, who presided over all meetings of the
Board from 1992 to 1994. The first two years of existence as a State College were the
most memorable and tumultuous experience on the part of the faculty and staff who
were affected by the transformation of a secondary school into a higher educational
institution. It was in 1994 when the new DECS Secretary, Hon. Ricardo Gloria assumed
the post as chair of the Board of Regents. He was instrumental in making the CNSC
5

grow from infancy, stand by itself and move towards the realization of its constituents
dreams and aspirations.
In order to achieve a more coordinated and integrated system of higher
education; to render them more effective in the formulation and implementation of
policies on higher education; to provide for more relevant direction in their governance
and ensure the enjoyment of academic freedom as guaranteed by the Constitution, the
composition of the governing board was modified. This change in the CNSC
governance was in consonance with Republic Act No. 8292, otherwise known as "The
Higher Education Modernization Act of 1997" signed into law by President Fidel V.
Ramos. The Act is a consolidation of Senate Bill No. 1721 and House Bill No. 4525,
passed by the Senate and House of Representatives on June 3, 1997 and May 29,
1997, respectively. It is aimed to provide "for the uniform composition and powers of the
Governing Boards, the manner of appointment and term of office of the president of
chartered State Universities and Colleges and for other purposes". By virtue of this Act,
the governing Board was renamed to Board of Trustees from Board of Regents.
Dr. Angel C. Alcala, Chair of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), was
named first Chair of the Board of Trustees until his retirement. He was replaced by the
incumbent Chair of the CHED, Dr. Esther Albano-Garcia. As Chair and Presiding Officer
of the Board of Trustees, she was represented by one of the CHED Commissioners, Dr.
Mona Dumlao-Valisno. When Dr. Mona Valisno retired on September 2001, Dr. Cristina
Damasco-Padolina took over the Chairmanship of the Board.
6

The administration of the Camarines Norte State College was first vested in its
officer-in-charge, Dr. Emma Canuto-Avellana, until the appointment of its first president,
Dr. Lourdes Apuya-Cortez on July 11, 1994. During her incumbency, the institution was
guided in the pursuit of its vision of turning the College into a center for education and
research, true to the ideals of the Commission of Higher Education. The College has
assumed the task of providing students with knowledge and skills and develop them into
more responsive and competitive individuals capable of promoting changes for their
own welfare and belong to the world community as "Globally-competitive Filipinos."
The appointment of its second president, Dr. Floria Palacio-Tagarino in mid-July
2000, marked a new milestone in the history of Camarines Norte State College. Her
assumption to the presidency saw the re-visioning for the State College, research
orientation and capability-building for the faculty and staff were undertaken,
strengthening of extension services was given emphasis and the establishments of the
production department motivated every member of the academic community.
The 3rd president of CNSC was vested to Dr. Wenifredo T. O&ntildeate, when he
was elected by the BOT on August 5, 2004 and was sworn into office on August 16,
2004. His vision of CNSC is to make it a premiere academic, research, extension and
entrepreneurial institution anchored to the needs of the society by producing
development-oriented graduates, equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in
utilizing locally developed but globally competitive mature technologies geared towards
the upliftment of peoples lives.

CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the
design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment,
including works like bridges, roads, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the
oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it was defined to distinguish
non-military engineering from military engineering. It is traditionally broken into several
sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering,
structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering,
water resource engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and
construction engineering. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector
from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from
individual homeowners through to international companies.

Civil Engineering Coursework
Civil Engineering programs generally cover the same fundamental subjects.
Universities in the United States offering accredited programs in civil engineering are
required to offer several major subjects of study. This is to ensure a minimum level of
competence among graduating engineers and to inspire confidence in the engineering
profession as a whole. The specific courses required to graduate may differ from
program to program however. Universities will often combine multiple subjects into a
single class or split a subject into multiple classes, depending on the faculty available
9

and the University's major area(s) of research. Fundamental subjects of civil
engineering include:
Building Wiring, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry and Construction Painting
Differential, Integral Calculus and Differential Equation
Physics, Static and Dynamics of Rigid Bodies and Mechanics of Deformable
Bodies
Elementary and Higher Surveying, Engineering Survey, Highway Engineering
and Transportation Engineering
Environmental and Safety Engineering
Construction Materials and Testing
Mechanics of Fluids, Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resource Engineering
Structural Theory, Reinforced Concrete Design, Timber and Structural Steel
Design
Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering

Sub disciplines
In general, civil engineering is concerned with the overall interface of human
created fixed projects with the greater world. General civil engineers work closely with
surveyors and specialized civil engineers to fit and serve fixed projects within their given
site, community and terrain by designing grading, drainage, pavement, water supply,
sewer service, electric and communications supply, and land divisions. General
engineers spend much of their time visiting project sites, developing community
consensus, and preparing construction plans. General civil engineering is also referred
to as site engineering, a branch of civil engineering that primarily focuses on converting
a tract of land from one usage to another. Civil engineers typically apply the principles of
geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering,
transportation engineering and construction engineering to residential, commercial, and
industrial and public works projects of all sizes and levels of construction.

CHAPTER II
COMPANY PROFILE
Company
The Ortiz Iron Works with its 12 years of experience both in Industrial Building
and Billboards Construction, the officers and staffs of the company can claim its modest
contribution to the nations construction industry. Despite the ever-changing economic
and political situation in the country, the Ortiz Iron Works has survived the competitive
field, and remains as one of the more durable contracting firms in the Philippines.
Various construction contracts, both in the government and private sectors, have
been successfully completed by the company, to the satisfaction of the clients. It
subscribes to the tenet that there is no small or big job which cannot be tackled, as long
as there is the mutual determination and willingness on both the client and the
contractor to finish the task.
The man Behind Ortiz Iron Works
Mr. Emilio P. Ortiz has a long and fruitful experience in building construction
which he inevitably gained from his 12 years exposure both in vertical and horizontal
building construction. He started in this field way back 1990 as a lead man for welding
works for AEGIS, Integrated Structure Corporation. During this time he was also a
college student taking up Draftsman and Construction Methodology at Rizal
Technological University (undergraduate). However, given this fact that he was working

14

while studying, he have shown excellence in his work leading him to deserve a
promotion. In 1992, he was promoted as a foreman and then after awhile in 1996, he
was again promoted as the General Construction Foreman. The experiences and formal
education that he had acquired have honored him into an efficient and reliable person in
the field of construction. In 2002, He left AEGIS, Integrated Structure Corporation and
decided to put up his own Steel Construction/Subcontracting Company which gave birth
to ORTIZ IRON WORKS.
Workplace Health and Safety
It is a policy of the Ortiz Iron Woks to strive for the highest safety standard on
their projects. Safety does not occur by chance. It is the result of careful attention to all
company operations by those who are directly and indirectly involved. Employees at all
level must work diligently to execute the companys policy of maintaining workplace and
safety.
The workplace and safety program has been developed to assure compliance
with relevant legislation and appropriate code of practice within these laws and
guidelines and to implement the rules and regulations contained therein on projects
under theirs protection.
A safe operation is organized, clean and efficient. If every employee view
accidents in the same way the company consider all other aspects of the operations,
the company will be in a better position not only to control accidents, but also to improve
the total performance of the company. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that all
15

CHAPTER III
ON THE JOB TRAINING ACTIVITIES
This chapter narrates the activities that the student trainees had gone through
during the training. This also includes the observation, participation, interaction and
challenges during their training.
This discusses its place as a development tool and how it was delivered
effectively by the company. On the job training is an important way in which students
acquire relevant knowledge and skills at work.
Narrative Experience
April 12, 2011 was the date that the trainee started an on-the-job training in the
Ortiz Iron Works owned by Mr. Emilio P. Ortiz. The company is a single proprietorship
business specializes in industrial building construction and billboard construction. The
company was referred by a fellow civil engineering classmate that will also undergo the
same on-the-job training. The trainee and three (3) of her classmates applied for that
company. Mr. Ortiz willingly accepted our application as a trainee on that same date.
The company has a branch office located at Paracale, Camarines Norte. Mr.
Ortiz along with the other company staff is currently constructing a small warehouse for
his business. The training started immediately, for Mr. Ortiz needs more assistance for a
rapid construction of the warehouse.

17

Mr. Ortiz himself started at the bottom as he worked his way up to the top. The
same concept goes for all of his trainees. The trainees were assigned at the labor
department which is lowest department in the construction. This department serves as
the man power that mixes cements, carry baggage and forms of scaffoldings. Training
supervisor provides PPEs for the trainees on the first day. PPE stands for personal
protective equipment which consists of helmet, safety goggle and gloves.
The trainee started at the labor department. Carrying pails of water to mix for the
concrete mixture was the first job. The trainee then helped at sieving of sand for
separating finer sand for plasters and course sand for mortars. Moving on, mixing
cement and sand for concrete mortar then assisting in layering of concrete hollow
blocks (CHB) and also filling it with the cement-sand mixture mortar. After four (4) days
of exhaustion at the labor department, the trainee was then transferred to the plumbing
department.
The trainee started at the plumbing department. The project engineer presented
the complete layout of the water line. The warehouses water line was not that
complicated for it consist only of a single comfort room, a kitchenette and maintenance
faucets therefore understanding it was easy. The trainee then assisted at measuring
and cutting G.I. pipes for the waterline then threading it. Then, applying of Teflon tape
on threaded pipes then installing of pipe fixtures. After four (4) days of accustomed job
at the plumbing department, the trainee was then transferred to the masonry
department.
18

The trainee started at the masonry department. The job was to mix cement
plaster then applying it unto the layered CHB and columns. Right proportion and
amount of mixture is needed in the process of creating cement plaster. It takes skill and
mastery of the work in applying cement plaster for finishing. The trainee was challenged
but with the help of the expert workers the challenge was overcame. But the trainee still
needs more training in order to attain the level of perfection on the aspect of cement
plastering. After four (4) days of fruitful experience at the masonry department, the
trainee was then transferred to the welding department.
The trainee started at the welding department. This department includes the
measuring and cutting of angle bars, riveting and welding of connections and
assembling of roof steel truss. The trainee assisted in measuring and cutting. Riveting
and welding of steel bars was first demonstrated then the trainee assisted in the welding
part. A face protective shield is required in the process for safety measures. Caution is a
must when welding a steel bar. Painting the steel bars was part of the trainees work.
Assisting on the installation of the assembled truss was the last of the job at
department. After three (3) days of productive knowledge at the welding department, the
construction was yet to be completed but the job end there.
The training in the warehouse construction lasted for three (3) weeks
approximately fifteen (15) days for the working days requires only from Mondays to
Fridays. Mr. Ortiz was to travel to Cavite for another project and then suggested for the
trainees to accompany him and continue the on-the-job training there. Without
hesitation the trainees then traveled to Cavite. After a whole night of travel, the trainees
19

arrived at the construction site. Mr. Ortiz introduced the trainees to his team then a
quick briefing of the project was conducted. The project was a large construction
warehouse made up of steel frames instead of the usual concrete beams and columns.
The construction of the project was already put into action before the trainees arrive. It
is considered almost half finished. The trainees first job was to draft the plan on
AutoCAD format. After finishing the drafted plan, the trainee was then assigned to do
some leveling and setting in the construction.
Mr. Ortiz shared to the trainee a technique in troubleshooting of an unleveled or
sagged steel beam. The beam is to be heated at the opposite side for it to straighten.
Such technique is important in a construction especially in a steel frame construction.
Time flies by and the project was already finished but the working hours of the trainee
was still incomplete, so Mr. Ortiz decided that the continuation of the training is to be
done at his main office at brgy. Baranka Mandaluyong City, Manila.
The job at the main office was mostly estimates and AutoCAD drafting of finished
billboard construction. It was the first time the trainee encountered a billboard
construction project. It involves all steel design some trusses were composed of the
usual angle bars, some are double angle bars and some consists of G.I. pipes for
trusses. A billboard steel truss design is much more complicated than simple roof truss
designs.

20

The company has a contract for billboard maintenance all around manila. The job
was to help in the maintenance. During the maintenance the job was to remove first the
tarpaulin then scrapping off rusts and the repainting of the steel bars. G.I. pipe is a
better frame rather that angle bars for it has smooth round edges so the tarpaulin fits
perfectly and it has less percentage of a rupture to occur. Then the training shifted to
Mr. Ortizs office branch in Novaliches where his office was currently undergoing
renovations. The trainee helped in some repairs and some repainting of walls. The
trainee acquired new knowledge in understanding all this field of work with the help of
Mr. Ortiz and his team. They willingly shared their knowledge not only by the book but
also though personal experiences with the trainees.

21

CHAPTER IV
PERSONAL EVALUATION, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
This chapter presents the entire training period with the activities done by the
trainees. This shows the accomplishments and skills being enhanced during the
internship period that gave them the best training ground as a beginner.
Accomplishment and Contribution
The trainees contribution to the company was mostly in assisting with the
construction and drafting of AutoCAD plans. She was able help the regular employee in
the warehouse construction. Such would help them to minimize their work and finished
it for a short period of time and with high quality. The trainee also did some
housekeeping on the times that there is no work. Cleaning the barracks can be a simple
way to minimize accidents.
The trainee also shared with them new knowledge such as conversion of units
and basic formulas. It would help them to compare the values using different units and
to get values in a simple but accurate way.
Competencies Gained
The training inside the company is learning experience each day. The trainee
learned to appreciate the lessons studied in school. She was able to realize the
importance of theories and formulas that was discussed inside the classroom. And also

22

to understand that everything that was thought inside the school can be a tool that can
be used in future career.
As the trainee was working as a trainee at the Ortiz Iron Works, she learned to
become a hard-working person. Time to complete the output product is not important,
but the quality. She also learned to follow the instructions as what the superiors said
and to accept opinion that they suggested.
At the school, being late is better than absent. But as what the trainee learned at
the Ortiz Iron Works, being absent is better than being late. Being absent can be a
cause of emergency situations like sickness, unpredicted travels and phenomena,
while, being late is a cause of misbehavior and unable to manage the time.
Lastly, the trainee learned that on-the-job training is not just only a subject to be
passed or a requirement to be completed but on-the-job training is an opportunity to
show what skills, talents and techniques that the student learned from the school and
also an opportunity to experience the life outside the campus; serving companies like a
professional on the field of the students specialization.
Projects/Output
At the end of the trainees OJT, she was able to be a part of the team that built a
structural steel frame warehouse.

23

Impact to Field of Specialization
The training served as the stepping stone of the trainees to the real life of an
engineer. It served as the beginning the real life of being an employee. The trainees
have realized that learning is a lifetime commitment that is continues even you already
have a job. The training gave the students more initiative to their chosen career. The
students were more encouraged to pursue the Civil Engineering course. The training
inspired the trainees to enhance their skills and knowledge in the field of mechanical
engineering. The trainees were given some ideas what could be the feeling or situation
being an employee. The training enriched their individuality as a beginner and created
the foundation of being a good worker. The best thing that the trainees have gained
inside the company was the good orientation of the person having the higher positions.
As a civil engineering student, the OJT made me realize the importance of the
course that I am taking. It made me realize the essential role of a civil engineer in a
company. Civil engineering can take the work of electrical and civil engineering, but, no
other course can takes place the work of civil engineer in a company. To be a
competent one, not only an engineer must understand the process and the underlying
principles but also be knowledgeable of the operation of construction that carry out the
process. An engineer must also possess good communication and leadership skill.

24

Conclusion
The students have undergone a good training. The task given to them was an
application of design Drafting, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), Building Design,
Reinforcing Bars Details, Earthquake Design, Structural Theory, Reinforced Concrete
Design, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry and Construction Painting of their course. The
mixing of cements and aggregates to form a concrete mixture and the painting of walls
has a great in connection to the subjects. The drafting of plans using AutoCAD deals
with the study of Drafting and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) itself. Materials and the
construction of the small warehouse and also the structural steel warehouse were
exactly related to what was discussed inside the classroom. The trainees were
technically given actual problems that have a main concern with the civil engineering
subjects. The nature of the career course was the main focus of the training. The
training of students will be useful if the nature of their training have the major concern
for their chosen career. The trainees would able to use the experiences they have gone
through during the training whenever they are already in the field of specialization.
