Book Arts Roundup

Rocky Mountain Chapter
Guild of BookWorkers Volume 16, Number 4 December, 2010
DENVER AREA
In this frst post-Standards newsletter issue, I hope all at-
tendees at Standards this year had an educational, infor-
mative and inspiring gathering! Its always great to con-
nect with fellow members from across the country at this
event, and I hope all of our Rocky Mountain attendees
found themselves enthused and energized after attending.

The chapter is excited to be bringing Shawn Sheehy to
Denver area, April 16 & 17, for a workshop titled The
Language of Pop-Ups. Participants will produce a bound
collection of 10 to15 pop-up structures over the weekend
workshop. See the detailed advertisement in this issue for
more information.
The Denver region is also in discussions with Don Glaist-
er, Director of the American Academy of Bookbinding,
regarding a spring workshop, and with wandering book
artist Peter Thomas regarding a spring talk. Look to this
newsletter and email announcements for updates as those
details are fnalized.

Finally, as we welcome the holiday season, I hope every-
one has creative, happy, and safe holidays.

- Ginny Kilander, Co-Chair
SALT LAKE CITY AREA

The Utah half of the Rocky Mountain Chapter will
be holding a book gathering at the Marriott library, Rare
Book and the Bookarts studio on Tuesday, January 25th,
starting at 6:30 extending to a possible 9:30.
The Guild Standards of Excellence in Tucson went
off without a hitch. At the annual guild business meeting
several items were discussed, among them were:
1. Membership numbers. The incoming President,
Andrew Huot, urged each of us to invite potential
members to join GBW, as this is a signifcant source of
funding for our organization and will keep it vibrant.
2. The new annual journal was revealed to much applause
and I hope that you have received yours.
3. The next location of Standards in Boston is now being
planned, and in 2012 it will be in Salt Lake City! Yes, it
was here in 2000, but it will have been 12 years.
I hope to see you in January at the book gathering and
to discuss these events and more.
- Ethan Ensign, Co-Chair

The Language of Pop-Ups
As the course title suggests, this workshop will explore techniques for
building noun-like pop-ups (formal structures) and verb-like pop-ups
(movement and/or animation for those structures). Participants will begin
by learning basic techniques and quickly move on to building a variety of
versatile forms and lifts. Eventually, participants will produce a bound
collection of 10-15 samples that can be used for further study and practice.
Throughout the workshop, secrets of professional pop-up engineers will be
revealed through examination of commercial books.
Beginners are welcome.
About the instructor: Shawn Sheehy
Shawn Sheehy combines paper engineering and paper making with an
interest in biology and science to produce sculptural pop-up books. Shawn
has taught workshops at PBI, Penland and the Centers for Book Arts in
Chicago and New York. His commercial pop-up clients include the Ameri-
can Girl Company and American Greetings.
GBW members have priority registration through January 31,2011; after that, registration is
