Speedster Development Kit SDK60

PRODUCT BRIEF
The Speedster Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)
from Achronix are the worlds fastest programmable logic
devices, with up to 1.5 GHz fabric performance suitable
for a wide range of uses in networking, telecommunica-
tions, video, digital signal processing, high-performance
computing, imaging, industrial and military applications.
The Speedster Development Kit for the SPD60 (SDK60)
offers practical implementations of Speedster performance
and IP on a development board so you can quickly begin
the evaluation and design process. With SDK60, you can
exercise the full performance of the device, run prepared
demos provided with the kit, confgure the device with a
new design, and debug that design on a common platform.
Development tools are provided, along with a collection of
standard reference designs.

Access
All fundamental high-performance Speedster features
are available including logic, RAMs, multipliers, SerDes,
programmable I/Os and Achronixs patented picoPIPE
acceleration technology with a rich selection of on-board
memories and data interfaces. The board can operate stand-
alone or as a PCI Express plug-in card.
Substantial memory is provided on the SDK60 in a variety
of ways. The SPD60 FPGA device contains both large
(18 Kb) and small (128 bit) embedded RAMs more than
3.3 Mb total. In addition, four types of external memory are
provided: a DDR2 module (128M 72), DDR3 (128M 8),
QDRII+ (4M 18), and RLDRAM (16M 18). This richness
of memory resources serves not only as ample local storage
for user applications, but also to demonstrate the variety of
interfaces that Speedster devices support.
A number of dedicated datapath interfaces are provided.
These include two Gigabit Ethernet ports, two 10 Gbps
optical ports (an X2 module and a SFF module), and two PCI
Express connectors (x1 socket and x8 socket). In addition
to these dedicated interfaces, a generous set of expansion
ports can be used to implement a broad range of interfaces
and ports. Three high-speed extension headers (96 pins
each) can be used as single-ended or differential busses to
daughter-cards for various signal-processing, video, telecom,
and storage interfaces. PMC and AMC connectors enable the
use of off-the-shelf daughter cards for similar purposes. (The
SerDes-based AMC extension is especially useful for high-
performance interfaces.) Finally, direct access to SerDes is
provided by a set of SMA connectors. This direct access can
be used either for additional high-speed expansion ports or
for signal-integrity testing (across a backplane, for example).
An ample supply of smaller headers, DIP switches, push-button
switches, and LEDs are available for low-level control and status.
Multiple clock signals are required in order to provide timing for
the various interfaces (memory and datapath) used in a typical
application. On-board crystals and oscillators, supplemented
by connectors for injection of external clocks, are the frst
layer of the clock generation capability. Flexible mapping and
synthesis circuits both on-board and on-chip distribute
these clock sources to the user circuits that need them.
Three mechanisms for device confguration are provided.
The SPD60 JTAG port is the most basic access point for
confguration. A fash memory, which can be programmed in
place and can then source a confguration bitstream to the
SPD60, is also provided. Finally, a header with an 8-bit parallel
path enables faster confguration from an external CPU.
Reference Designs
A set of reference designs is provided as part of the SDK.
Each reference design features and demonstrates a specifc
aspect of the device capability SerDes, embedded RAM,
multipliers, and full-rate (1.5 GHz) fabric performance.
The reference designs also refect a range of application
categories networking, video, signal processing, high-
performance computing, and instrumentation all of which
signifcantly beneft from the performance offered by Achronix
picoPIPE acceleration technology. A clean, intuitive Windows-
based user interface is provided for these reference designs.
Summary
The SDK60 puts the full power of the Speedster archi-
tecture in your hands. Real high-performance functionality
exercising logic, multipliers, memory, and SerDes is
available immediately upon opening the shipping box. With
SDK60 you can quickly experience the unprecedented perfor-
mance of Speedster and immediately begin the evaluation
and design process.
