Curriculum

At DBF, we will offer an enriched EYFS programme, designed to meet the unique and diverse
educational and developmental needs of the international and multi-cultural student population of
Dubai. The National Curriculum for England is divided into Key Stages with The Early Years Foundation
Stage is followed by Key Stage 1 and 2.

Early Years Foundation Stage (https://www.gov.uk/early-years-foundation-stage)
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of
children from birth to 5 years old.

Assessments
A detailed base line assessment occurs when your child is first admitted to the school, whether entering
at FS 1 or FS2.
Entry to DBF is dependent upon an assessment of your childs readiness for school. All parents are given
an appointment for their child to attend for assessment, once an online application has been made and
the application fee has been paid.
The assessment of your child is conducted by an Early Years specialist and the information gathered,
forms an important part of the initial base line assessment process.
All assessments are carried out in an enjoyable, play-based and fun manner, with an emphasis upon
interacting with your child and recoding observations.
At the discretion of the Principal, some parents may be permitted to be present during the assessment.
This can be extremely helpful, especially if your childs first language is not English.
Once your child is admitted to the school, there will be ongoing assessments made of your childs
progress, based on the observations of the specialist staff who work with your child.
At the end of their time at DBF, we will have a detailed picture of your childs progress and attainment
across the Foundation Stage.
A detailed record of your childs learning journey, identifying developmental milestones achieved, is
shared with parents and used to aid a smooth transition into Year 1 of Primary School.
Effective assessment is achieved through skilful observation and assessment for learning (A4L)
procedures rather than formal testing, in keeping with appropriate early years methodology and best
practice.

The EYFS concentrates on 7 areas of learning, defined as prime and specific areas of learning.
The prime areas of learning are:
o personal, social and emotional development
o communication and language
o physical development

The specific areas of learning are:
o literacy
o mathematics
o understanding the world
o expressive arts and design
Learning is frequently developed through play based activities, centered around a range of child friendly
topics or themes.

All of the above seven areas of learning are interrelated and are not taught in isolation, but in a cross-
curricular fashion.
This ensures a well-rounded education for your child and learning with understanding and enjoyment.

Early Years Foundation Stage Profile
At the end of the academic year when a child turns 5, the practitioner records each childs development
by watching the child playing and in the classroom. The completed assessment is known as the early
years foundation stage profile. This is used to help the year 1 teacher plan lessons for the children.

DBF Language Philosophy
Cultural awareness and true internationalism are vital for todays children to aid development of
effective communication tools. At DBF our language of instruction will be English, with exposure to
Arabic also. An important school aim is to encourage children to enjoy and appreciate a variety of
languages from an early age.
