ENCE 305 Fundamentals of Engineering Fluids PS #14

Due: Monday, Oct. 6

Assignments are due at the beginning of class (8:00 a.m.). No late homework assignments will be accepted. Show all work on each
problem clearly and concisely (using the Grid Method / Factor Label Method when appropriate), state assumptions, identify sources of
information. Make sure your solutions are neatly assembled and written/typed in a professional manner. Any requested plots should be
done using a professional software package (e.g. Matlab, Microsoft Excel). Any code/spreadsheets you create to compute results should
be well documented and turned in with your solutions. If we cant follow what you did, you wont get credit.
Include the following information at the top of your homework document (the information in brackets is only necessary if you worked
with others):

1. Flow Rate
A river cross section is trapezoidal with top width 40 m, bottom width 35 m, and depth
2 m. Velocity distribution in the river is given by V
x
1.62 0.5pz 1.8q
2
, where V
x
is in m/s, x is the longitudinal direction, and z is elevation measured from the river
bed (bottom) in m. Also, let y be the transverse horizontal direction (perpendicular
to direction of ow). Find the volume ow rate (discharge, Q) through this section.
Sketch the longitudinal velocity prole (in x z plane), sketch the cross-section shape
(y z plane), and write the integral explicitly before solving.
2. Control Volume
The segment of river shown has a rectangular cross-section, with width 50 ft. The
river bed is at angle 10
0
from horizontal. The average velocity is 0.4 m/s at the
upstream end (point 1), and 1 m/s at the downstream end (point 2). The control
sections (boundaries) are vertical. The vertical depths are as follows: Z
1
1.5 m
and Z
2
1.0 m. Fresh water is owing at a temperature of 60
0
F.
(a) Find 9 m

V

A at control sections 1 and 2.
(b) What is the net mass outow from the control volume?
3. Control Volume
A porch is designed with one screened wall facing the ocean. The side walls are glass.
Assume that air passes through the screen with no resistance. The porch is 10 ft wide
(w) and 8 ft high (h). The porch has a roof (not shown). The air temperature over the
water is 65
0
F; assume that this temperature applies as the wind reaches the porch.
Calculate the mass ow rate of air into the porch when
(a) the wind is blowing directly from the ocean (sea breeze) ( 90 degrees)

(b) the wind is blowing at an angle of 60 degrees to the coastline
(c) the wind is blowing parallel to the coastline ( 0 degrees)
In all cases, the wind velocity is constant at 10 ft s

. Write the mass ow rate
dot product explicitly, and interpret the resulting sign, consistent with control volume
convention.
