Essay On "Science - A Blessing Or A

Curse"
Manish Rajkoomar
Essay
Everything in the universe has its uses and abuses. The same applies to science. Science
has revolutionized the human existence. It has made mans li!e happier and more
com!ortable.
Electricity is one o! the greatest "onders o! modern science. The gro"th o! !ast modes o!
transport and communication has changed the "orld into global village. In the !ield o!
agriculture# science has helped in increasing the crop production and improving $uality.
Science has enabled man to diagnose and treat many dangerous diseases. In!ormation
technology and computers have revolutionized our li!e%styles. &ut# the boon o! science# in
many cases# has been turned into bane because o! its misuse. Science has posed a threat
to the very existence o! mankind "ith "eapons%nuclear# biological# atomic# chemical etc.
'yber crime is the latest addition to crimes list. Misapplication o! science has brought
mankind to the path o! destruction. (e should use science to get its blessings and not
misuse it to make it a curse.
Science has revolutionized the human existence. Much o! the progress that mankind has
made in di!!erent !ields right !rom the stone age to the modern age is due to the progress
made in the !ield o! science. )ot only material progress but also the mental outlook o!
man has been in!luenced by it. It has made mans li!e happier and more com!ortable.
*griculture# business# transport# communication and medicine to name a !e" are all
highly indebted to the "onders# science has produced. (e have become scienti!ically
more advanced !rom our ancestors. This is because the "orld has undergone a
tremendous change because o! the rapid strides made by the science and technology.
Electricity is one o! the greatest "onders o! modern science. It is a source o! energy. It
can run any type o! machinery. (ith the help o! electricity# "e can light our rooms# run
buses and trains# and li!t "ater !or irrigation.
The discovery and development o! a large number o! po"er!ul energy sources%coal#
petroleum# natural gas# electricity etc. have enabled humanity to con$uer the barriers o!
nature. *ll this has !acilitated the gro"th o! !ast modes o! transport and communication#
"hich in turn has changed the "orld into a global village. Science has given man the
means o! traveling%cars# trains# aero%planes# ships etc. man has even traveled to the moon.
Science is a help in the agriculture !ield too. The !ood production levels and $uality have
improved by multiple !actors. Soil analysis# hybrid varieties o! crops giving higher yield#
!ertilizers# pesticides# advanced tools and machinery# irrigation e$uipments# etc. have
increased the production o! crops.
Today# "e have scores o! meteorological satellites in outer space sending data# pictures to
earth stations helping agriculture scientists !ind and analyze soil patterns. They also help
them trace progress o! rains# "inds and even locusts that endanger crops.
Satellites even !ore"arn about natural calamities# like hurricanes "hich cause mass
destruction. Science has enabled man to diagnose and treat many dangerous diseases.
+pen heart surgeries# organ transplants etc. have all become possible. * number o! killer
diseases are no" curable. ,iseases such as smallpox# polio# plague# malaria etc. have no"
almost been eradicated. -idden diseases in the body can be diagnosed easily "ith the
help o! .%rays. Scientists have succeeded in cloning animals. The methods o! diagnosis#
prevention and treatment have developed "ith a rapid speed. *s a result o! this much
progress in medical science# man !inds himsel! more sa!e# secure and his average age has
lengthened.
Man# "ith the help o! science# has been able to increase longevity# arrest the gradual
decay o! human body and control the spread o! lethal diseases by making extraordinary
li!e prolonging drugs and medicines. Science has provided us "ith many means o!
education and entertainment. The television# video# radio# computer# internet etc. have
enabled the human race to enrich its kno"ledge about various places# persons# birds#
animals etc.
In!ormation technology and computers have revolutionized our li!e%styles. *utomation in
banks and rail"ay stations have provided relie! to the public and sta!! alike. Ticketing and
reservation have become more e!!icient and convenient. In medical diagnosis# computers
are being used to locate and investigate accurately and precisely any abnormalities or
diseases. Internet has some very use!ul applications in our day%to%day li!e. Mobile phones
are outcome o! in!ormation technology. &ut at the same time it cannot be denied that the
boon in many cases# has turned to be bane. There are innumerous examples "hich prove
that science%a blessing has been turned into a curse.
Sir *l!red )obel experimented "ith dynamite to clear huge mountains to turn it into
productive land. but modern man is using it to kill his !ello" human beings and destroy
nature. The destructive potential o! atomic energy "as "itnessed in *ugust /012# "hen
the 3nited States dropped atom booms on the 4apanese cities o! -iroshima and )agasaki.
Those "ho survived the nuclear bombing su!!ered !rom its a!termath. It is a horrible !act
that much o! the national income o! even a developing country is spent on ac$uiring
latest "eapons# bombs and missiles. 5uns# revolvers# tanks and !ighter planes#
explosives# nuclear bombs etc. "ere invented to develop a strong security system to
protect the innocent masses# but their misuse is no" crushing humanity. *part !rom
atomic "eapons# man has also started stockpiling biological and chemical "eapons.
These "eapons are also extremely dangerous.
&iotechnology is a great boon !or !ighting the diseases. &ut along "ith medicines lethal
biological "eapons have also been developed. 5erms are deliberately released into the air
to spread diseases. *nthrax envelopes are used !or spreading terrorism.
The negative e!!ects o! the excessive use o! !ertilizers and pesticides# used to increase
yield# are no" evident. soil salinity has increased. Traces o! ,,T are !ound in plants.
Establishment and expansion o! !actories has resulted in all round pollution. Motor
vehicles emit a lot o! poisonous material into the atmosphere. This has led to the
depletion o! the ozone layer and global "arming.
Television# a good source o! entertainment# education and in!ormation# has its negative
e!!ects too. There are many programmes "hich promote violence and vulgarity# and
teenagers are more interested in "atching these programmes. *ggressiveness and
violence at an early age have lead to shocking crimes. Sometimes# even the nature people
learn and apply di!!erent methods o! crime by "atching serials and movies.
The po"er o! the internet is being abused by the "idespread use o! pornographic
material. 6ots o! people spend their time in chat rooms !or obscene discussions.
Science has t"o !aces%good and bad. It depends on us "hich !ace "e "ant to see. I! "e
use the gi!ts o! science in positive direction "ith positive intention then it "ill provide us
"ith s"eet results but i! "e use it in the "rong "ay the results "ill de!initely be bitter. To
save ourselves and the "orld as a "hole !rom destruction# "e should !ollo" the right "ay
to use the gi!ts o! science so that it appears as a blessing and not as a curse.
