The Abrahamic Covenant and You

Approximately 4000 years ago, someone decided to go against the wickedness of man.
Mankind had no regard for the consequences of their actions, as long as they were doing
things in their own benefit. Seeing his own kind devoting themselves to idolatry and
witchcraft, he decided to seek and find the true God. And, as always happens to those who are
sincere, he was successful. The Lord revealed Himself to him, giving him a ministry – a calling
- and this is always a challenge.

Understanding Abraham’s calling and the blessings of the Covenant God made with him is
extremely important to us, as this Pact was made with him and his descendants. Although we
may not be Jewish – natural descendants of Abraham –, Galatians 3:.13,14 states that the
Lord’s suffering on the Cross had the primordial mission of bringing to us, the gentiles, the
blessings bestowed upon the patriarch of the Hebrews.

Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will
show you (Genesis 12.1). The commandment was very clear: Abraham should abandon his
relatives and his father’s house, and go to a land that was yet to be shown to him. This land
was a figure of the land that we will inherit in Eternity. As sojourners and pilgrims, we must
abstain from the fleshly lusts which war against the soul, (1 Peter 2:11), until we arrive in
celestial Canaan, where there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying (Revelation
21:4). We will be eternally with the One who created and loved us: In my Father’s house are
many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I
am, there you may also be. (John 14:2,3).

I am sure that the inheritance we will receive will be greater than the Planet Earth, which God
gave to Adam. If he hadn’t sinned, the world would still be like the Garden of Eden, as virgin
as if no one had ever touched it. Although men have acted irrationally for so many centuries,
the Earth still has enormous resources to be explored.

In the text we are examining, there are eight promises made by the Lord to our father in the
faith, which, if understood, can help us a lot:Now the LORD had said to Abraham: "Get out of
your country (…) to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you
and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and
I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be
blessed"(Genesis 12:1-3).

1. I will show you. Abraham had to trust Him. He had to leave and only then, would he see
what God had prepared for him. In our case, the same thing applies. He will show us what
awaits us in eternity, how great our inheritance in Christ is. The Holy Spirit gives us the
following clue: But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into
the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Corinthians
2:9).

2. I will make you a great nation. The Lord doesn’t come into one’s life to diminish us or to
make us weak, but to make us a great blessing. God wants us to develop; He wants us to be
able to enjoy all the things He created. He wants to transform us, spiritually speaking, into a
great nation. He wants us to be a strong people, fearless, holy and obedient to His voice: For I
know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil,
to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

3. I will bless you. God wants each one of us to be blessed. His plan is for the blessing to be
in our hands. Our lives should be filled with accomplishments and not with failures. Abraham
was called to be a life changer. He was anointed with such great power that he would come to
be recognized as the conveyer of blessings. In the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we are anointed
with power to act in the name of Jesus, as His witnesses: "But you shall receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in
allJudea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts1:8).
5. And you shall be a blessing. After having made all these promises to the patriarch
himself, God revealed to him that he should be a blessing, both to the Lord, and to his
fellowmen. Today, the same thing happens to us. He hasn’t given us this beautiful
understanding of what we are in His Kingdom, and of what we can do, nor has he made us
prosper only to live with freedom and abundance. The Lord showed the Apostle Paul the
greatest reason for his salvation: “But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you
for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen
and of the things which I will yet reveal to you to open their eyes, in order to turn them from
darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of
sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me” (Acts 26:16,18).

6. I will bless those who bless you. The Lord reveals Himself as a God who rewards. He
shows that he is aware of everything that happens to us. He sees the slightest gesture of
those who help us and compensates them: "For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in
My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his
reward. (Mark 9:41).

7. And I will curse him who curses you. I pity those who rise up against a child of God;
they immediately become cursed people. That explains why Jesus teaches us to pray for those
who persecute us and to love our enemies: "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those
who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and
persecute you (Matthew 5:44). So the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to
me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods (1 Samuel 17:43). The result
goes without comment.

8. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. This blessing was completely
fulfilled in the seed of Abraham: The Lord Jesus. This is the greatest purpose of our calling, to
extend the blessing He has given us to other people. There will be an eternal reward awaiting
us on the other side: Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and
those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever (Daniel 12:3).

All we have to do is to accept the Lord Jesus as Savior and Lord of our life, and we will be
saved, becoming, immediately, part of God’s covenant with Abraham, as well as an heir of all
the promises that are registered in the Holy Scriptures. Why not accept Him now??
