Using cable strippers, strip off the appropriate amount

of sheathing taking care not to damage any of the
conductors.
Always test strippers on a spare length of the same
wire to reduce conductor damage.

The conductor strands protrude slightly past the end of

the conductor crimp, forming a "conductor brush"
The conductor strands forming the brush are kept
together as a group and not flared out.

State the correct sequence when connecting and
testing the 48v DC power supply from the
customer provided female Molex connector to the
Tellabs 8605 equipment
Understand the demarcation line between
Openreach and customer responsibility with
regard to live DC power working.

DC Power Cable
Colour Code
last modified on 17 August 2010

It is essential that the polarity of the power supply is

maintained at all times. The colour code must be
observed, for 48 volt positive earth installations. The
colour code for the power cable is as follows....
Blue = Positive (earth)

Power
Demarcation and
Supply Problems
last modified on 17 August 2010

Remember:
It is the customers responsibility to provide power
as part of making the site Ready For Install (RFI)
It is not Openreachs responsibility to correct any
problems with the power supply
This course does not provide the Openreach
engineer with full DC Power installation training
If the sites power supply has not been provided
correctly, the job should be sent back as Site not
RFI using the standard Openreach process.

Testing

last modified on 16 August 2010

Testing for Voltage and Polarity

To do this, follow the steps listed below
Using a digital multi-meter set to an appropriate
DC volts range
Plug in the Red and Black test cords insuring the
correct polarity of the leads
Attach insulated test probes to the other end of
the test leads
Insert the probes into the customer supplied
female Molex connector insuring the correct
polarity
RED test lead to the BLUE wire
BLACK test lead to the GREY wire
Switch on the power from the breaker and check
polarity and voltage reading.

10/6/2014

tellabs-8605 - equipment guide

With the test leads correctly inserted in the female

Molex connector and the power switched on note the
voltage measured. As you see from the slide above,
the off load voltage is 52.3 volts, which is well within
the permissible working voltage range of the Tellabs
8605.
If however the multi-meter indicated a (negative)
value e.g. 52.3, the customer supply has been wired
incorrectly and the Tellabs unit MUST NOT be
connected to the supply and the job handed back.
OR
There is no power present when tested, the job is
handed back as not ready.
Remember: this course does not cover you to work on
live DC power systems, therefore, under no
circumstances should any attempt be made to fault
find the customers supply.
