That s me with my be ar picture d o n the right. The picture was
take n abo ut 40 ye ars ago at my pare nts ho me at the co rne r o f

Ive ce rtainly change d ove r the ye ars, and so has o ur busine ss.
Im pro ud to say that we re mo re succe ssful than we ve eve r be e n.
We re making gre at guitars, and the de mand fo r o ur instrume nts is
asto unding. In particular, many o f o ur newly intro duce d instrume nts
are providing gre at so unding guitars at a ve ry re aso nable price , a
tre nd that is e spe cially po pular with yo unge r, up-and-co ming gui-
tarists.
Spe aking o f new, we re ve ry pro ud to be intro ducing the Jo hnny
Cash D-42JC Signature Mo de l. It s no surprise that this guitar is
black. It is also strikingly be autiful. The challe nge , naturally, was to
cre ate an instrume nt with as much inte grit y as the man. Thats what
we did!
We had so me fun with the Arlo Guthrie / Alice s Re staurant 30th
Annive rsary Editio n o f 6- and 12-string mo de ls. The scrimshawe d
mo the r-o f-pe arl church o n the he adsto ck lo o ks spe ctacular and o f
co urse the circle s and arrows! As with all o f o ur limite d e ditio n pro j-
e cts, we have trie d to do so me go o d by se tting aside a po rtio n o f
the pro ce e ds fo r charit y.
Abo ut a ye ar ago , To m Humphrey gave me a call and aske d
whe the r we co uld he lp him me e t the ove rwhe lming de mand fo r his
unique ly de signe d classical guitars. Lo ts o f discussio n, ne go tiatio n,
and swe at cre ate d the Martin/ Humphrey Classic. To ms de sign is a
fairly radical de parture fro m traditio n, but the fact is that it pe rfo rms
be tte r than the o ld de signs do , bo th in playabilit y and to ne . We
think we have a winne r with this o ne .

De ar Mr. Martin,
I picke d up a se t o f Martin SP
strings at the Anahe im NAMM Show,
but it was no t until just re ce ntly that I
put the m o n my 000-21. By the way, I
be lieve I have the o nly so lid he ad 000-
21 eve r made by Martin.
In any case , I usually go thro ugh
strings in o ne se t, but I use d the SPs fo r
fo ur se ts ove r a thre e -day pe rio d. I do
lo ts o f Ce ltic ballads and it happe ne d to
be St. Patrick's Day. The strings actually
laste d thro ugh all o f that! Now, two
we e ks late r, I'm still using the m at ho me
and the strings are still go o d.

I cant unde rstand how the D-1R, a
surprisingly ine xpe nsive Martin with
laminate d ro sewo o d back and side s,
can so und be tte r than the o the r so lid
wo o d guitars in my co lle ctio n. The gui-
tar re co rds e xce lle ntly, which is unusu-
al fo r a Dre adno ught, but it has a bassy
punch. I fe e l the laminate s must pro -
vide a stiffe r box, and co uple d with the
p ate nte d A-frame b racing p atte rn
and the so lid to p, the se things all wo rk
in co njunctio n to pro duce a guitar that
is beyo nd any wo rds de scriptio n.

ye ars. So naturally, whe n the 000-42EC Eric
Clapto n Signature Mo de l was re le ase d as a lim-
ite d e ditio n o f 461 instrume nts in 1995, I we nt
o ut and purchase d #406. I love this guitar so
much that whe n the 000-28EC was re le ase d in
1996, I didn't he sitate in ge tting o ne o f tho se as
we ll. I go t #140, and now I am a ce le brit y whe n
I show up at my lo cal music sto re .
Eve n tho ugh I am no t a pro fe ssio nal gui-
tarist, I am having no pro ble m trying to justify
my re ce nt purchase s. I have be e n lo o king fo r
the se Martin instrume nts since 1970 whe n I
first be came aware o f the m. I now own thre e
Martins, a D-62 and the two 000 Clapto n mo d-
e ls. I am in he ave n!
O ne issue is unse ttle d. The 000-28EC do e s

Martins qualit y representative, Dennis Tenges, at the rosewood section of one of the
governmental log depots in India. The logs in this yard will be registered, sorted for
qualit y, and auctioned. Only falldown or dead trees can be cut from government land.
Dennis observes the preparation and cutting of a rosewood log at the brokers sawmill.
