A
primal force
of nature
created by
God. That
was how one of Theodore
Roosevelts critics
described Americas leg-
endary 26th president, a
man who coupled a
remarkable intellect with a
vibrant humanity and cow-
boy-like persona. Theodore
Roosevelt will come alive
on Saturday, Oct. 18 for a
special one-man perfor-
mance by actor and histori-
an Doug Mishler. This free
event takes place at the
Estes Park High School
Auditorium at 7 p.m., and it
is part of the One Book
One Valley series spon-
sored by the Estes Valley
Library. No tickets are nec-
essary.
In addition to the evening
event, the public is also
invited to a free pre-presen-
tation that afternoon at 3
p.m. at the Library, during
which Mishler will talk
about his work in creating
his stage portrayal. To
attend the afternoon ses-
sion, sign up at the Calen-
dar link at estesvalleyli-

During the re-enactment,
Mishler will be in full char-
acter as TR to share
firsthand stories from his
robust life: outdoor adven-
tures spent exploring and
hunting; his many varied
political careers; the events
and decisions of his Presi-
dency; and his experiences
as a Rough Rider, environ-
mentalist, and progressive
reformer. TR is among
the most fascinating, pro-
found, and yes even
funny characters going
today, says Mishler. He is
the best of all of us.
Over the last twenty
years, Chautauqua scholar
Doug Mishler has become
nationally recognized for
bringing history to life. In
addition to his latest Chau-
tauqua characters, Jack
Warner and D. W. Griffith,
Mishler has presented P. T.
Barnum, General Stone-
wall Jackson, and fourteen
other historical figures in
Chautauquas all over the
country. Mishler holds a
doctorate in American cul-
tural history from the Uni-
versity of Nevada at Reno,
and, when he is not on the
road, he is frequently
directing or acting in plays
or teaching American his-
tory.
An Evening with Theo-
dore Roosevelt is being
hosted as part of One Book

featured book, The Big
Burn, which tells the sto-
ry of TRs role amid the
burgeoning conservation
movement in America a
century ago.
The presentation is made
possible through the Estes

ership as a possibility, as
well as those who are
ready to take that plunge.
