Omotesando Street 5-9-11
Jingumae Shibuya-ku Tokyo

. Omotesando Street is an avenue in Tokyo and home to many
upscale shops featuring several international brand outlets.
Hence, the street is sometimes referred to as 'Tokyo's
Champs-lyses'. On this prime location, Japanese architect duo
Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, known collectively as SANAA,
has designed the building that accommodates a store for fashion
retailer Dior. The building is gift-wrapped in a translucent skin
that allows the building underneath to show through. The effect
is achieved by using clear glass on the outside and a second
displaced layer of translucent acrylic on the inside.

. This project looks from the back and sides like any other steel
and glass office building, but from the south side it seems as if
the park in front of it, one of the few green spaces in downtown
Fukuoka, has grown up and over the building. The stepped
terraces climb 60 meters and are planted with more than 75,000
plants. Stairs zig-zag up to the top from with great views over the
city. ACROS stands for Asian Crossroad Over the Sea and the
building is home to an International Convention Center and a
Symphony Hall. As a pioneer of ecological architecture, it has
become a new landmark of Fukuoka, enchanting many with its
green step garden exterior - standing like a lush green mountain.

Kyoto Central Train Station
.
Address
Higashishio-koji 8-3
600-8214 Kyoto
Japan
. Japan's second-largest train station building (after Nagoya
Station) and one of the country's largest buildings, incorporating a
shopping mall, hotel, movie theater, Isetan department store,
and several local government facilities under one 15-storey roof.
At 70 meters high and 470 meters from east to west, it exhibits
many characteristics of futurism, with a slightly irregular cubic
facade of plate glass over a steel frame. The station's large main
hall with its exposed steel beamed roof, called the Matrix, is
meant to reflect both the structure of the station and the grid
like layout of Kyoto's street network. Kyoto is one of the least
modern cities in Japan by virtue of its many cultural heritage
sites, and was largely reluctant to accept such an ambitious
structure in the mid-1990s. As a result the design has attracted
criticism for its role in breaking down the traditional cityscape.

Address
Godaisan 4200-6

Japan
http://www.ibec.or.jp/jsbd/D/index.htm
. Known as Makino Museum of Plants and People, the museum sits
on Mount Godai in the outskirts of Kochi City. The Naito
architects' intervention sits within the landscape and provides
archiving facilities and a platform to share with the public the
impressive collection of plants and books by the father of
Japanese botany: Dr. Tomitaro Makino. The building program
added up to a significant amount of square meters which the
architects chose to successfully divide up into two buildings that
link through a pergola. The resulting structure comfortably sits in
the landscape as considerate to the local environment as the
ethos of Dr Tomitaro was. Its carefully crafted construction and
considerate design extends to every detail and gained the
projects a wide range of awards.

. A creature like building cladded in traditional fish-scale like
ibushi style tiles, must have looked completely futuristic as it
emerged from the most intriguing pantadome system. It was the
first building of the kind where precast concrete panels were
used to erect both walls and roof simultaneously. The overall
appearence , to Isozaki's credit, mixes sucessfully tradition and
future and still feels contemporary all those years later.

Romanian Pavilion UIA Tokyo 2011

Address
Marunouchi 3-chome, Chiyoda-ku 5-1
100-0005 Tokyo
Japan
. Winner of national design competition for UIA 2011 Tokyo
Romanian Pavilion. The architects used only what had been
available to us in order to achieve a minimalist and interactive
space. The value of available resources had been transferred from
that of a single use investment to that of intelligent components.
The components are the very digital informative brochures, the
digital photographic frames. Resources are limited and every loss
is quantified. The pavilion transient existence is being
sketched-up in real time by the installation's own disappearance
as frame after frame is being removed by the visitor. The
installation is made of local materials. The digital photo frames
are acquired from Japanese manufacturers in order to support
the local industry and reduce transportation needs. The
crescent-shaped digital wall suggests the image of interwoven
bricks that transform into structural units, intelligent bricks,
basic cells of the intelligent sustainable building of 2050.

http://www.izuphoto-museum.jp
. The Izu Photo Museum is part of the Clematis no Oka, a beautiful
complex that combines art and nature at the slow pace of the
hills of mount Takayama. It is a very understated yet beautiful
building where every detail has been designed with the light
touch of an intrinsically Japanese manner. The building feels
like a journey, a story told through a series of spaces, and
gardens that interlink naturally, unpretentiously , allowing the
exhibition to talk to the visitor without interruption. The
subtlety of details contributes to the overall experience. The
display walls, for instance, appear suspended, as supporting
structure is painted in black and the white boards do not not
touch the floor which lowers its edge as a contribution to the
overall effect. The gardens act as pauses in the journey. They
are windows to places one wants to stop and contemplate,
reminiscent of those photographies that Hiroshi Sugimoto took at
the New York Natural History Museum.

. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is located in Hiroshima Peace
Memorial Park, in central Hiroshima, Japan. It was established in
August 1955 with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall (now the
International Conference Center Hiroshima). The museum exhibit
presents the facts of the atomic bombing, with the aims of
contributing to the abolition of nuclear weapons throughout the
world, and of promoting world peace. The Hiroshima authorities
took a lot of advice about the city's reconstruction from foreign
consultants and in 1947 Tam Deling, an American park planner,
suggested to build a Peace Memorial and to preserve buildings
situated near ground zero (directly below the explosion of the
atomic bomb). The main building designed by Kenzo Tange is
sited on axis - the building arranged perpendicular to it - that
runs through the park, intersecting Peace Boulevard and the
Atomic Bomb Dome. The building is raised on massive piloti
(columns), which frame the views along the structure's axis.

Address
Chuo-ku, Ginza 2-5-11
104-0061 Tokyo
Japan
. Ginza is one of the most famous commercial districts even in the
world. Marronnier Street is a gracious, active street lined with
creatively designed buildings. The DE BEERS Ginza Building design
is intended to reflect the sophisticated Ginza streetscape and fit
appropriately into this dynamic context. The fluid and flexible
form of the building was also inspired by the beauty of the female
outline. The sparkling light on the surface of the gently curved
form of the building subtly suggests the shimmering reflection of
diamond. The expression of the curtain wall varies continuously
as it ascends and as it reflects the ever-changing appearance of
the sky. The exterior surface of the building reflects the sunlight
and Ginza city lights in a subtle way and the impression of the
faade as time passes. On the exterior of the building,
specially-finished stainless steel pipes are horizontally laid-out
creating sparkles of of light throughout the surface of the
building.

. Haute couture and star architecture have grown to understand
each other rather well in the recent years. Major fashion brands
distinguish themselves by inviting world leading architects to
indulge themselves in the design of flagshipstores and
extravagant showrooms. The highest density worldwide of such
state of the art showpieces can arguably be found on and around
Tokyo's Omotesando. One of the most impressive contributions to
this phenomenon is the Prada 'epicenter'. This 33 meter high
building has a faade like a membrane which is built out of wedge
shaped elements that frame flat, convex and concave windows.
These element also form the outer structure of the building.
Closed horizontal bracings not only make the frame rigid, but also
house the more private dressing rooms within this transparent
building. Everything about the building tells us that money was
not an issue. But perhaps the most costly design choice of all was
to leave a large part of the expensive plot un-built.

. The Yokohama International Passenger Terminal is situated on
Osanbashi Pier, which was originally constructed between 1889
and 1896 and is Yokohama's oldest pier. The project is a nexus
between the city and the bay. The site had a pivotal role along
the city's waterfront that, if declared a public space, would
present Yokohama City with a continuous structure of open public
spaces along the waterfront. The building is produced as an
extension of the urban ground, constructed as a systematic
transformation of the lines of the circulation diagram into a
folded and bifurcated surface. These folds produce a roof garden
with covered surfaces where the different parts of the program
can be hosted.

. This boutique store is part of the Mikimoto family, one of the
most famous names in Japanese jewellery with a history dating
back to 1899. While the main Mikimoto shop is dedicated to
high-end jewels, this store focuses on casual fashion baubles and
accessories. Ito was inspired by the mysteriousness of a jewellery
box and imagining bubbles around pearls and floating petals. The
building also features a lounge and an atrium, which serves as
both an exhibition hall and as an area for seminars for women.
Painted in a subtly sparkling mica-laced pale pink, the four walls
are a marvel of engineering. Each comprises two 56 m tall steel
sheets; manufactured in sections, welded together on-site, and
installed barely 20 cm apart. With concrete poured between, the
steel is strong enough to support the 9 stories.

. At 332.5 metres (1,091 ft), it is the second tallest artificial
structure in Japan. The structure is an Eiffel Tower-inspired
lattice tower that is painted white and international orange to
comply with air safety regulations. Built in 1958, the tower's
main sources of revenue are tourism and antenna leasing. Over
150 million people have visited the tower since its opening.
FootTown, a 4-storey building located directly under the tower,
houses museums, restaurants and shops. Departing from here,
guests can visit two observation decks. The 2-storey Main
Observatory is located at 150 metres (490 ft), while the smaller
Special Observatory reaches a height of 250 metres (820 ft). The
tower acts as a support structure for an antenna. It was
constructed of steel, a third of which was scrap metal taken from
US tanks damaged in the Korean War. When the 90-metre
antenna was bolted into place on October 14, 1958, Tokyo Tower
was the tallest free-standing tower in the world.

. Yoshio Taniguchi is world renown for his beautiful museums. His
attention to detail extends beyond the obvious and the tangible
to the subconscious idea of beautify and balance that we all
recognise but cannot define. His prescriptive yet considerate
approach makes sure that his buildings deliver the most
appropriate response to both surroundings and exhibits from day
one. The Marugame museum is both a public space and a
building. The elevated platform on its foreground with Genichiro
Inokuma's mural as a backdrop works as a covered square where
children play. The roof terrace allows adults to enjoy a quiet
moment and the building with its subtle detailing and considered
lighting embraces quietly each exhibition.

. In the year 2000 Toyo Ito, with the Sendai Mediateque, changed
the way we looked at libraries and begun a discussion that it is
still relevant today. In a successful partnership between
technology and architecture, Ito's obsession for lightness ensured
the delivery of a building which is both complex and flexible. A
building that provides spaces that flow and provide moments of
interaction for people. Layer after layer, different uses are
proposed and weaved together by structures that reflected the
skeleton of this ground breaking building in more than one way.

. Tadao Ando's Shibuya Station Extension is composed of two prime
gestures: an elliptical shell with the span of 256x79 feet, and the
connection of that shell to elements of Tokyo's underground
station network such as escalators, passages and tunnels, thus
making it an integral part of Tokyo's transportation system.
Tadao Ando's new Shibuya Station extension is all about making
travel fun again: "A station should be a place where visitors think
"I was glad to come to this station" or ?that station was
fascinating","Ando says, as he examines the three-story atrium of
the nearly completed building. Ando's design is based on what he
calls a "chichusen", or underground spaceship. Commuters board
the buried flying saucer near the top of the atrium and are
carried down to the tracks at its base. "Because this station has
an atrium from top to bottom, you can easily see where you
are... it gives you a sense of security," Ando says.

. This church is a small structure on the corner of two streets at
Ibaraki, a residential neighbourhood. It is located 25km
north-northeast of Osaka in the western foothills of the Yodo
valley railway corridor. The church has an area of roughly 113
m. The church was planned as an add-on to the wooden
chapel and minister's house that already existed at the site. The
Church of the Light consists of three 5.9m concrete cubes (5.9m
wide x 17.7m long x 5.9m high) penetrated by a wall angled at
15, dividing the cube into the chapel and the entrance area. One
indirectly enters the church by slipping between the two
volumes, one that contains the Sunday school and the other that
contains the worship hall. The benches, along with the floor
boards, are made of re-purposed scaffolding used in the
construction. A cruciform is cut into the concrete behind the
altar, and lit during the morning (as it is facing east). It took
more than two years to complete.

It is a cultivated junk yard situated between the ancient rice
fields and the river with a straight axis to the Shinto temple.
The Potemkin is an artistically articulated collage of recycled
urban and industrial waste, an industrial ruin for post-industrial
meditation. The wall system is framing a set of old oak trees
and a series of outdoor and indoor spaces, smaller temples and
courtyards with the final focus on the river down in the valley.
River, where you may fish your ayu-fish, grill it and eat it up in
Potemkin and go home. The rice farming village of Kuramata
is dying. Local Knowledge of hundreds of years are about to
disappear very rapidly; traditions that are based on a harmonious
co-existence between the man and nature. Urban visitors are
often sleeping in Potemkin and they are writing to the architect
that they slept good.

people up, over, underneath, and into the three shells. Each
shell is partially covered by glass roofs articulated in a scale-like

. The faades of Japanese architect Kumiko Inui's buildings are
often visual puns or optical illusions. We saw the opportunity to
create a simple visual pun after seeing her Marunouchi boutique
created for Japan-based German fashion-designer Jurgen Lehl.
The contrast between the soft fabric of the garments and the
hard 'fabric' of the architecture inspired us to make the
architectural materials take on the soft and billowing properties
of Jurgen Lehl's textiles. First we recreated the boutique interior
as a 'still' image and tried to capture the rich shadows, and wall
colours important to Kumiko Inui, then we set to work inflating
the space as if it were being assembled in a television studio.
The music is fun but slightly mad, sound adds another dimension
to the unnerving experience of watching glass and concrete and
wood loose their prescribed properties!

door to a prime redevelopment opportunity in a new commercial
district adjacent to Namba Train Station, the first stop from
Kansai Airport. The architect conceived Namba Parks as a large
park, a natural intervention in Osaka's dense and harsh urban
condition. Alongside a 30-story tower, the project features a
lifestyle commercial centre crowned with a rooftop park that
crosses multiple blocks while gradually ascending eight levels. In
addition to providing a highly visible green component in a city
where nature is sparse, the sloping park connects to the street,

. The National Art Center in Tokyo was designed in a collaborative
project between the architect Kisho Kurokawa and Nihon Sekkei,
Inc. It was built on the former site of the Institute of Industrial
Science of the University of Tokyo over a period of nearly four
years, from July 2002 to May 2006, with factors such as the
environment and earthquake safety in mind. The National Art
Center is a unique and innovative art exhibition facility: Instead
of maintaining a permanent collection, it makes the most of a
total of 14,000 square meters of exhibition space, the largest in
Japan, and focuses on serving as a venue for various art
exhibitions.

. Toyo Itos Tods Omotesando Building is a slender, L-shaped
building for the Italian footwear retailer, it contains offices and a
boutique fronting Omotesando, Tokyos famous four-lane,
tree-lined boulevard that in recent years has become the citys
showplace for luxury brands and top architects. The seven-storey
building continues Ito's exploration of ideas of surface, the
dramatic structure mimicking the shapes of the tall elm trees
that stretch along Omotesando Avenue and reinterprets them in
its faade as a series of crisscrossing geometric forms. The faade
is a smooth blend of concrete and glass and materials are kept
simple. The structural frame that supports the building is well
concealed. Inside, opaque glass hidesthe rear view so that
shoppers are drawn to the front of the store where they play an
important role in animating the building. (text from RIBA Royal

. The Chichu Art Museum is designed by Tadao Ando and is located
on a small island south of the main island of Japan. It's very
unknown by tourists; only Japanese people know about it. The
Art Museum is embedded in the hilly landscape of the island; from
the sky only rectangular forms are visible, which gives the
museum an mysterious character. Inside the routing is so that you
only experience views at the sky, or, in the restaurant, the
beautiful scenery of the island coast. The museum is built only
in concrete, which gives it a solid expression. There are several
art projects inside, the one even more amazing than the other.
Note that every piece of art is only accessible by wearing
slippers, offered by the futuristic dressed girls in white clothes.

Neil Barrett Flagship Store
.
Address
Minami-Aoyama 3-17-6

http://www.neilbarrett.com/
. The concept for the Neil Barrett flagship store is based on the
minimal cut of the brand's fashion design and parallels its
approach in using the same design parameters of fixed points,
folding, pleating and cut outs. Rather than defining a single room
or space, the design creates a circular passage allowing the
customer to experience the space in multiple ways and
interpretations. The design of the store plays with the
complementary characteristics and the related dualism between
male and female. The furniture piece on the ground floor is
designed as a strong, masculine and dynamic form whilst the
piece on the first floor enunciates femininity through more fluid
contour lines. The first floor is designed in a more playful
manner. The furniture piece with a white smooth Corian finish is
set against the raw fair faced concrete surface of the rest of the
space. This is accentuated through the contrast in color and finish
of the white matte furniture finish against a black glossy floor.

Japan
http://www.kanazawa21.jp/en/
. The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art stands in the
center of Kanazawa, on a site linking together diverse but equally
important city functions. Circular in form, with a diameter of
112.5 meters, the building has no front or back, leaving it free to
be explored from all directions. While being a reaction to the
accessibility of the site from multiple points of entry, as well as
to its breadth, the circularity of the plan also works in concert
with keeping the overall building volume low, to effectively
mitigate the scale of the project and an overly grand presence
common to large institutions. In order to further encourage the
multiplicity of approaches, the architects have intentionally
resisted establishing a primary faade or entrance. Besides the
museum, the cultural centre houses a library, restaurant, theatre
and exhibition spaces (text from project's website).

. In the framework of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennal in the north
of Japan, the Art Front Gallery, which organized the event,
commissioned an installation from the architects. They proposed
a project that plays with the landscape, the winter snow (which
can reach 7 metres or 23 feet!), the vistas, and the trekking that
visitors do. In this exhibition, the works were spread throughout a
series of quite wild, sparsely populated valleys. The Matsudai
Small Tower is an installation that presents two functions in a
tower covered with a grid of galvanized steel: a point of view on
the site in the hieratic pose of a weird-looking animal, and a
space that plays with the snow and the treetops, and affords
campers three platforms of duckboards for an 'experimental
night'.

. Carina is a children's and mother's clothing store, designed by
Kazuyo Sejima. The shop is wrapped in two faades. The inner
faade is made up of a steel structure and large glass windows.
The outer faade is made out of white expanded metal, similar to
the weaves that were used for the New Museum at the Bowery in
New York. The outer faade covers up almost the complete
building, except for the entrance door and one window on the
second floor. This is a daring approach as it provides an
introspective look at first glance. But, as in many recent
architecture in Tokyo, the shop comes to life when you take a
closer look and even more so when dusk falls over the city.

http://www.swatchgroup.jp/nghc/index.html
. Nicolas G. Hayek was co-founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board
of the Swatch Group. Shigeru Ban wanted all 7 brands to have an
equal opportunity for public exposure. He organized the building
into a stack of three- and four-story volumes, each with its own
set of retractable shutters on the main front, and turned the
lowest volume into a public thoroughfare contiguous with the
sidewalk. Within this four-story, indoor-outdoor passage, he
placed tiny, satellite showrooms, one per brand. Doubling as an
elevator, each showroom connects only to the brand's main shop,
either above or below grade. The boutiques fill the first four
levels (plus part of the basement), followed by three floors for
customer service and six floors of offices topped by a dramatic
event hall overlooking the city in three directions. The airy
interior spaces, unconventional interior-exterior treatment,
simple materials, and fragrant green lobby create an oasis of
unusual calm.

. The basic architectural design, a glass box surrounded by a
walkway-gallery that connects the floors, was designed before
the land was found. The basic design include from the beginning
all the aspects of the project, from the shape of the building to
the design of light switches and furniture. Usually an architecture
projects is developed in a sequence, building, interior furniture,
products, making it is difficult to be totally homogenous. To
achieve a weightless architectural space we use 25mm steel slabs
as floor. This is equivalent to a line in the architectural scale.
The scale of furniture and architecture become the same. From
the slope, the interior is visible from floor level to ceiling level
the top of a table is as visible as the bottom, a real 3d interior, a
very difficult challenge. Using 3d animations and models the
sequences of the interior were checked from all angles. c-1 is
not a minimalist house on the contrary, it is expressionism.

designed by Dutch architects MVRDV. Gyre, also known as The
Swirl, is generated from five identical rectangular floor plates
that are rotated on a vertical axis and then trimmed to fit the
site on Omotesando street. Besides the big names and ground
floor tenants, Chanel and Bulgari, the building will house the first
Asian branch of the MoMA Design Store and a large shop for Martin
Margiela. Higher up there are smaller shops like a hair dress
salon, an exclusive watch shop etc. The top levels contain a
series of different restaurants. The interiors of the shops are
designed by the different tenants. From the Gyre website: A
building in the shape of a gyre is a body in motion, with a
magnetism that exudes energy. Our hope is to become an
incubator of a new way of shopping, thoughtfully, in a way that
becomes a force for good. GYRE connects with your and connects

. When approaching, the house appears like a huge abstract shape
rising from the ground, with its shaped angle following the steep
angle of the land. It seems to be sliding on the ground, a sense of
tension and movement is expressed. The strong angle of the
house was also guided by the requirement of winter conditions,
the heavy load of snow slides from the roof. So entering the
house from the covered bridge you find yourself into a huge
simple single room (6m high ceiling). Like a mini loft in the
middle of the forest, it is unexpected and refreshing. For a
second you forget you are in the middle of a forest. The light
seems to be coming from everywhere, between the ceiling and
the walls, the volumes are enlightened by long invisible windows,
it has almost a religious feel creating a peaceful and relaxing
atmosphere. The changes of the light outside create subtle
changes in the interior all day long: natural lighting become the
artist of a live performance.

. This is a house consisting of indoor and outdoor spaces. The
clients are a married couple. Their request: We want a house in
which we feel as if we are outdoors. While there is no clear
boundary between the indoor and outdoor in terms of the
construction of a house, it offers uninterrupted experiences and
similar dimensions, structures, finishes, and furniture density.
Although the indoor and outdoor are different environments, all
the more reason it is fun if there are both the indoor dining and
outside dining. You can sleep on the comfortable bed outdoors
for a short sleep. When thinking like this, I feel that a living in
which you can do various things indoors and outdoors is possible.
I aimed to design a house in which its dwellers feel at ease as if
the whole house looks like a garden. I thought that I'll try to
design a house where the scenes of living expand to both indoor
and outdoor.

. The architecture for this church is centered by a wide nave
arranged with six arches and a bell tower that symbolically lays
importance on the seven elements, the seven days of creation
and the seven churches of the Orient. The impression of a
biblical open sky image is created from which the light amid the
Holy Spirit descends upon the followers and worshippers. The
softly curved arches specifically designed for fine acoustics also
remind of a hand overwhelming the crowd. For the use as an
authentic concert hall facility the temple displays the comfort of
lodges discreetly positioned right from within the arches. The
adjacent kindergarten was designed by the same office, six years

. Matsudai is located in the mountains, summers are hot and humid
and during winters the region is covered under a thick layer of
snow. MVRDV built here a cultural centre, a village museum.
Every 3 years the centre will be used as the main stage for the
regional Echigo-Tsumari art festival. By lifting the building,
creates a snow free zone in winter and a dry and shaded plaza
during summer, which can be used as a playground or as a space
for performances. The building is supported by 'legs' that give
access to people coming from different directions, The leg-spaces
are free from the weather conditions and cut through the
building dividing the different functional spaces. On the rooftop,
a 'rocky' landscape is formed, shaped by the dynamic demands of
the leg-shaped bridges. This roof landscape provides an attractive
viewing platform. It might also reminds summer visitors of the
wintertime, when Matsudai will be hidden under a massive layer
of snow.

. Tokyo is a city of contrast and discovery. The ttt guest room in
the new build tower expresses the emotions of walking through
Tokyo. 3 emotions are the characteristics of the space:
reflection, contrast & harmony. Reflections: the modern Tokyo is
a gallery of mirrors, building and windows reflect each other
creating a virtual city, what is real, what is a reflection what is
digital. People appear and disappear between buildings, life
become a game in a maze of images. Within the complexity and
craze of Tokyo, a subtle harmony exist, a combination of
tradition and futuristic simplicity. The harmony guest room,
recreates this balance with the use of sakura pink glass. The pink
glass layer composes the interior, creating a strange but familiar
feeling. Contrast: The lounge is a double floor high space, with a
large lighting suspended from the ceiling. The strong green color
of the glass simulates the nature of a digital garden unexpected
to be found on the 54th floor of a high tower.

. Space is scarce in Tokyo. That's why every square inch of land is
utilized, even if it is a remnant of an adjacent lot. This building
is tiny. It's an 11m long, two-story high wedge, 2.5m wide at one
end and tapering to just 60cm at the other. Although small, it has
a prominent position facing a well-trafficked road. Being nearly
all front, it has become an inhabitable billboard. A strong, simple
image of a bamboo grove stenciled in white is used onto the glass
facade and the back wall is painted bright green. By day, the
graphic becomes a simple form of sun-shading. By night, green
light dapples over the intersection.

. Part of a wider concept of interlinking towers under the name of
"City of Air", Hara's project had to be reduced from four to two
towers due to practicalities. Even so, it is absolutely breathtaking
to experience the magic of engineering hidden behind the
structure of this complex. The building program includes an
underground restaurant, mall and a roof garden observatory,
opened to the public and connected through a series of lifts and
diagonal escalators which float above the cityscape. Although it
is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Osaka, with 173 m,
it is nowhere near the tallest, but even so, it is worth a great
deal of admiration.

. Maison Herms, Tokyo, by Renzo Piano is the corporate
headquarters and retail store for Herms Japan. The program
includes offices, workshops, retail and exhibition spaces,
multimedia areas and a roof garden. The building also includes
access to the subway via a courtyard which divides the long
faade in two. It is an elegant, glowing, rectangular form which
has been carefully crafted from specially designed 45cm x 45cm
glass blocks which give the impression of the building as a
precious object containing equally precious objects. Renzo Piano
stated that the building was inspired by traditional Japanese
lanterns. The thickness of the glass faade blurs the activity
within during the day and at night the building glows from the
light within whilst simultaneously providing acoustic insulation
from the bustling Ginza streets outside. Clear glass boxes become
display cases for Herms products at street level.

. Although in a shopping area, this building is situated on a
commercially difficult location. The area is quiet and the building
is located at the end of a cul de sac. Maybe that's why the faade
has been shaped in this striking form. The faade protrudes on
the street like a swollen belly and is constructed of clean
concrete. From a European point of view the building looks
unfinished but take a closer look and you will notice the care with
which the design has been made. There is a shop on street level
and 4 office floors on top of that.

. When this building was finished, it functioned as an annex for the
neighboring HHStyle flagship store, designed by SANAA. That's how
it got its name. In January 2008 however, HHStyle have left their
casa and since then new tenants have arrived in the black
bunker. It looks like a bunker, but folded in origami-style. It's an
angular black construction made out of 16 mm steel plates that's
as startling as some of the area's high-fashion apparel. It is
painted with a zinc-based primer fluoropolymer paint. The lease
for the site covered two areas, one for a ten-year period, and one
for half that duration. The architect thus was called upon to
concentrate most of the building on the ten-year plot, leaving a
fair part of the site empty. The building consists of 2 stories plus
a basement. New buildings in Tokyo are not allowed to block
more than a certain percentage of neighbours light, so Ando
crafted the form until he found the ideal solution.

. The building is located in Izumi, strategically close to the Kansai

headquarters. The office is a modern hi-tech base for client sales
and technical assistance services. The structure can be seen as a
blend between Japanese and Italian cultures combining to give
life to a small technologically-refined building. The long hallway
that spans across the various functional areas of the entire
building recalls the business philosophy of the Italian
headquarters. The building's internal courtyard recalls the role of
light in Japanese culture and has been conceived as a "lantern of
diffused light". The interior spaces join an absolute visual
transparency with a flawless acoustical soundproofing. Likewise,
inspired by Japanese culture is the choice to make the hallways
and the walkways converge towards the central courtyard so that
the eye always encounters, the green harmony of the trees.

. The aim of this project is to give pleasure by moving around the
space and searching a different point of view at every time, a new
spatial sensation, a renewed atmosphere. The intervention offers
a series of principal architectural objectives: change the
perception of the space in order to get a wider open space;
generate a common matrix for the new installations; set the
flexible space using mirror panels and reflective materials; offer
a flexible atmosphere according to the treatment of light. The
floor is composed by modular panels, made out of glass, a metal
structure and a light system, and it is able to change the colour
and intensity of the light. The light is controlled by specific
software which, according to the programming, will generate
various atmospheres depending on the hour of day and night.

as a monument of the Asian Pacific Expo (Yokatopia), an event to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of the enforcement of the
Fukuoka City organization. It's the tallest seaside tower in Japan.
The 234m high tower also has a triangular cross-section which is
covered with 8000 half-mirrors. Because of this, it has been given
the nickname 'Mirror Sail'. The underground weight of Fukuoka

. The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor
and one underground floor. Because this building, consisting of
the caf wing and the museum wing, was designed to be public
open space within the district plan area, the limitations on the
building area and the sun shadow control were very severe. As a
result, less than 600 square meters are above ground. The
building has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel
plates that slope gently down to the ground. Once inside, the
space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's
unobtrusive exterior. The ground floor houses the entrance and
reception area, while the underground floor houses two galleries
and a triangular sunken court. Highlighting Issey Miyake's concept
in clothing design of "A Piece of Cloth," Ando devised the idea for
the roof as one sheet of folded steel. The building incorporates
the longest sheet of double-glazed glass in Japan.
