more. But, its something to keep in the back of your mind if you
plan to spend more on your wine choices.
Appellation of Origin: A basic appellation of origin for American
wine, such as a state or county, indicates at least 75% of the grapes
came from that appellation. But remember, no single state or
county is an American Viticultural Area (AVA), which is a specific
region recognized for making wines of distinction. If an AVA is
stated on a label it must supply a minimum 85% of the grapes.
With increasing precision in the location of the grapes appellation
of origin, the characteristics of the wine become more defined. For
example, a New York or Oregon appellation of origin will have
fewer distinguishable characteristics than a wine from a more
narrow geographic AVA designation, such as New Yorks Finger
Lakes or Oregons Columbia Valley.
However, keep in mind the one great advantage to a broad state
appellation: it gives flexibility to the producer, allowing the winery
to choose grapes from anywhere in the state locations they likely
select precisely because of superior conditions for growing certain
grapes. Take, as an example, a 100% Pinot Noir made with the
appellation California. Assume that 50% of the grapes come from
Sonoma Countys Russian River AVA in Northern California, and
50% from Santa Barbara Countys Santa Maria Valley AVA, about
300 miles away in Central California. The appellation of origin
California is enormous, but the grapes were grown in two of the
most esteemed regions in the state for Pinot Noir. Its helpful when
a label provides extra details like this, but it isnt required.
Beyond an appellation, a single vineyard name might be included
on a label because the producer believes its unique soils and
microclimate produce a special wine. Or, because the vineyard has
earned a name for itself and is respected for producing wines of
outstanding quality. A vineyard by itself is not an appellation of
origin nor an approved American Viticultural Area.

a quick and easy guide for the wine beginner.

BY JOSH STEIN
which it comes about. Each wines fermentation may be its own little
ship at sea, if you will, but the winemaker is the admiral of them all,
pulling together a range of varieties through subtle tweaks. The
vessel used adds to this as larger tanks make it logistically easier in
some ways as there is less to get lost or done wrong than when
working with dozens of small tanks or bins, yet the potential for heat
issues can be greater because of the size of the columnar liquid
masses; its not easy to get 10,000 gallons up to temp, and its not easy
to stop it once its going, for example.
Equally, the method employed to cause agitation, punchdown or
pumpover, as well as the number of times done daily, has an impact.
Think of your personal style of letting a teabag steep (or not you
know who you are) and you have an analogous situation as agitation
causes more mixing of liquids and solids in the fermenting must.
Even when done, there are stylistic choices: post-fermentation
contact with the gross lees or separation into barrels, casks or tanks
before fermentation is even fully done?
Intensity, of course, leads to discussions of alcohol and sugar.
Residual sugar is actually something which is easy to control if the
winemaking is detail-oriented. Fermentation is never the same twice,
but each and every one can and must be tracked for temperature,
yeast health, amounts and kinds of nutrients, Brix and alcohol, and
other leading indicators of how well and how fast the conversion of
sugars to alcohols and malic to lactic acid, if applicable, is happening.
Arresting the fermentation, pulling the emergency break, if you will,
is generally done through shutting down the temperature and adding
enough sulfites to knock out the yeast. Its more of a coast than a
dead stop, however, with attention to the numbers and experience
being the producers of desired results. This is obviously aided or
held back by the starting Brix levels, as noted above.
I like to think of fine winemaking as very much akin to fine
cooking and baking, so its no wonder the two go hand in hand in
wine country. We strive through our winegrowing, like the chef who
grows and raises her own flora and flauna, to produce fantastic
ingredients for which we have recipes developed through
education, time in others cellars and experience. The next time you
sip a red, think about what decisions were or were not made, and
consider, too, what you would have done the same or differently had
the recipe been yours to tweak. Enjoy!
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a decade, and, in
addition to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which
produces a nationally and internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and
donates a percentage of its sales to the children of wineworkers in the form of
college scholarships and support funds, he regularly consults for wineries and
organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via their subsidiaries, Discrete
Wine Support Services and SF-Integrated Vineyard Management Services.

Sometimes, the best a destination has to offer cant be found in your Frommers
guide. High above the heavily-trafficked Napa Valley floor and hundreds of
pretentious, monotonous wineries, sits a century-old treasure: Pope Valley Winery.
This scenic road less traveled, draped with vineyards and offering panoramic views
of the picturesque Napa Valley, leads you northeast of the Silverado Trail and back in
time to 40 quaint, country acres. Here, the Burgundy Wine and Olive Oil Factory was
founded in 1897, a three-story gravitational winery that shipped wine by train to Al
Capones Chicago speakeasies during Prohibition. A century later, it was purchased by
the Eakle family, long-time Pope Valley Residents, and given new life.
The winery no longer sells to gangsters, but not too much else has changed. Pope
Valley Winerys mark of authenticity is signed and sealed with the nineteenth century
farming equipment, hand dug cave and original blacksmith shop, farmhouse and
wagon shed, all still on the property.
In 2009, siblings David Eakle as winemaker and Diana Eakle Hawkins as general
manager, took hold of the reins with the goal of bringing Pope Valley Winery to the
next level of quality, distinction and recognition. They hand-craft 5,000 cases of fine
wines a year, among them the Estate Reserve Cab and Merlot Eakle Ranch, which both
won Best in Class for their 2010 vintages at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine
Competition. Theyre known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel Port, and a very
rare Old Vine Chenin Blanc, and produce Sangiovese Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and
Zinfandel as well.
Visitors who are welcomed like old friends can embark on one-of-a-kind tours
of the historic grounds and through the cave, which took nine long years to dig. A
variety of tasting options include custom wine flights, picnics, a private view of the
vineyards from their 1897 Lounge and a Brunch & Bubbles Experience for the early
birds. Wine Club members can even get away for a night with a stay in the original
farmhouse, sipping wine under a bright sky completely blanketed in stars.
No need for frills, extravagance or even paved roads. The only bells and whistles
youll find here is literally on old ringing bell on a big oak tree. Pope Valley Winery
prides itself in staying true to its historic, Old Napa roots, while making fine wines that
can compete with the best of the New Age Valley below.

Serious red wine drinkers will always gravitate to the darkest and
the most powerful of all the reds: Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc.
Yet, novice winemakers will steer as far away as they can from these
reds in particular The Lion Petite Sirah (and yes, this is the only
correct way to spell Petite Sirah). The
reason for this justified intimidation is the
fact that Petite Sirah best fits the old adage,
Dynamite comes in small packages.
Petite Sirah is a dynamite grape black
as a moonless nights sky, thick like velvet,
and full of blackberry and red currant
bouquets. However, if you do not grow this
grape in the right region and have a bold
enough winemaker, then it will never reach
its potential as the darkest and most stealth
of its noble brothers.
The perfect area for Petite Sirah is Suisun
Valley. In fact, this little-known valley,
located on the backside of downtown Napa, has the perfect
microclimate for Petite Sirah.
The reason is the volcanic soil it shares with Napa, but even more
so is the fog shield created by the Mount George mountain range in
particular, the Twin Sisters of this range, which is the only thing that
separates Suisun Valley and Napa Valley.
This mountain range prevents most of the fog from spilling over
from the Napa side into Suisun Valley. This fog dam allows the
morning sun which has the most sugar contributions to bathe the
Suisun Valley fruit to its fullest content and most importantly do so
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
while the soil is still cool from the evening before. Just when the fruit
cannot take more sun, the mountains again step in to save the day, as
an evening sun shield. Allowing the Petite Sirah to cool quickly, and
for the breeze to come in, thickening the skins and priming the roots
deeper into the soil, only to repeat itself all over again for six months
during spring and summer.
On the topic of Petite Sirah, one cannot help but mention, the lion
tamer of tamers, the dragon slayers of slayers,
the Petite Sirah whisperer of whisperers, the
one-and-only Vezr family and their
winemaker son-in-law, Jake.
The Vezr family has one of the most
revered Petite Sirah vineyards in Suisun
Valley, in fact, in all of the California North
Coast. This vineyard is called the La-Salette
Vineyard. The La-Salette Wine is the
ultimate Petite Sirah blend and experience
obtaining the highest recognition and selling
price ever for a Petite Sirah in a live auction
($30,000 in 2007 for a 1.5 liter magnum).
You must come and try all three Vezr
family wineries in the Suisun Valley, yes thats right, three wineries.
The Vezrs with their success in taming the Petite Sirah have
turned Suisun Valley (which is only 12 miles from downtown Napa)
into an old-world-wine oasis, specializing in four styles of Petite
Sirah, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and their famous
Verdelho. All three wineries provide a different experience as well as
different wines. While visiting, see if you can schedule a private tour
of The Ranch and go into the old horse stables for a secret port barrel
tasting like no other you have tried.
Suisun Valley is calling your name, come visit the Vezr family.

Looking for unforgettable wines and memorable ways to enjoy them? Then
Sequoia Grove needs to be at the top of your to-visit list! Pulling in off of busy
Highway 29 produces an instant transformation as the winerys drive shields visitors
from the cars and noise, greeting them with Cabernet vines and a literal grove of
Sequoias, including the two which flank the entrance to the 150-year-old barn which
houses the tasting room. Everything is light- and wood-filled, giving the impression
of being high above the Valley despite the proximity of the rest of Napa around the
winery.
Sequoia Grove estate occupies twenty-four acres of Rutherford Benchland, and the
combination of warm-but-not-hot temperatures, alluvial soils and cooling fog
exposure each morning and evening allow for balanced, elegant winegrowing. Putting
the focus on the vineyard, on producing great grapes, is held in the highest regard. As
Michael Trujillo, President and Director of Winemaking, says, for Sequoia Grove,
vineyard balance is first. Balance includes everything from the roots of the vines to
the fruit itself.
This is seen in the range of the winerys offerings, each of which is true to the
philosophy that the winemaker allows the site to show through with balance in the
wines. Releases run the gamut, from Ros of Syrah to Gewrztraminer and Sauvignon
Blanc, as well as Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah, among others. But

Best Winery in Napa award for 5 consecutive years in the Bay Area A-List.
2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

auction. Proceeds from food sales, silent auction and raffle benefit
Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County, who provide highimpact youth development programs to over 3,000 children each day
after school throughout local communities.
Weve brought in more than 100 of the best Pinot Noir producers
on the West Coast. These are incredible wines, that in many cases
you cant find in the marketplace. It will be extraordinary day for
Pinot Noir enthusiasts and local communities as we come together to
raise money for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County, said
Eric Hall, Co-Founder of Pinot on the River and owner of Roadhouse
Winery.
Pinot on the River begins with the Grand Tasting at 11 a.m. for
early-entry ticket holders, and noon for the public. Featured wineries
include Roadhouse, Papapietro Perry, Failla, Siduri, Kanzler
Vineyards, Littorai, Paul Hobbs, Sea Smoke, The Donum Estate and
Patz & Hall. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase these
excellent wines and others through the silent auction, hosted by Boys
& Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County. They have also put
together an exclusive instant wine cellar that will be raffled off
during the event.
Tickets are on sale now for both the full weekend and for the
Sunday tasting only. For more information, visit
www.pinotfestival.com or email info@pinotfestival.com.
