A Wireless On-The-Go Industrial Safety System for Workers Safety in
Hazardous Environments
Abstract
In any industry workers safety is a major concern to ensure the smooth running of the industry. In
industries like mining having a fixed system for environment monitoring and safety surveillance is
not possible because of the nature of the industry itself, where in the location of work keeps
changing almost on a daily basis. Hence a wired or even a wireless fixed network is not a practical
solution. Such a industry requires a monitoring solution that moves with the workers as and when
then move to new locations.
In this project a portable battery operated low cost device will be constructed that could be
integrated into any of the various safety items worn by miners like the helmets for example. At any
point in time if a certain person come in contact with a poisonous gas the sensor will sense the
concentration of the gas and relay a message over the multi hop network to the monitoring station.
At the same time the beeper in the device is sounded in a certain pattern to alert the person of the
poisonous nature of the gas.
When the monitoring station receives the information about the presence of a poisonous gas in a
certain region, it dispatches a querying message to the concerned person asking for an
acknowledgement to ascertain if they are okay. This is done by using the beeper on the device. The
querying message from the monitoring station triggers the beeper and the worker has to press the
button to confirm if he is okay. When the worker presses the button, the acknowledgement message
is transmitted back to the monitoring station. In case the person does not acknowledge the querying
message then the monitoring station can initiate an emergency response procedure to help the
person(s).

Existing System
1. In the existing system a device is fixed in common, so that it gives a general emergency
signal in that mining area
2. It creates confusion in determining the person who has got injured.

Proposed System
1. In proposed system separate device is provided to each of the personnel and they can be
tracked during emergency
2. The beeper is provided with the device for alerting the person about hazardous gases
3. Acknowledgement is provided by the worker if he is safe.
