The Crayon Box that Talked

Overview
The Crayon Box that Talked is a profound poem by Shane DeRolf that conveys the simple message that
differences should not only be tolerated and accepted but embraced. The crayons soon learn that when
we work together the outcome is much more beautiful, colorful and interesting.
Lesson Objectives
Students will learn to be caring and respectful toward others despite differences.

Why didnt the crayons get along? (Possible response: They were each so different from one another)
How did the crayons learn to get along? (Possible response: Learning to appreciate each ones special
qualities.
Assessment
Teacher will listen to the comments made about the childrens fellow classmates.
Teacher will observe student behaviors toward fellow classmates.
Extensions and Adaptations
1. Class-Made Book entitled, Childs Name is Special
(This may be done in conjunction with a Student of the Week/Day Program where each child will
be honored.) As a class, discuss the designated childs special qualities. Allow each classmate
to illustrate the honored student. Under the illustration, the child may complete the following
sentence: _______ is special because... Compile the illustrations into a class-made book that
is presented to the honoree at the end of his/her special week.

2. Bulletin Board
Use patterns of a crayon, one per child, using various colors of rainbow, and a crayon box. Take
a digital picture of each child and mount onto crayons. Display crayon spilling out of crayon box.

What do you think plugged up means? What will happen if you don't plug up a hole?"

"The sailor used the tiller to turn right and then go straight.
What do you think a tiller means? What is it used for?"
d. Steepest
"Mt. Apo is the steepest mountain in the Philippines.
What does steep mean? What can you say about Mt. Apo?"

B. Review
Holy Eucharist
The Holy Eucharist reminds us that we belong to one family in spite of our
individual differences.
There is no Eucharist where there is no church.
The Eucharist draws people closer to God and to one another.
The Eucharist is the highest form of prayer we offer to God as a community united
in His love.

C. Lesson Proper
- More details about the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.
- The act of forgiving sins is referred to as;
- Confession- stresses our needs to acknowledge our sins and to ask for forgiveness.
- focuses on the conversion process of contrition, repentance, and

The 7 Deadly Sins

Pride- it is to believe that we are superior to our neighbor and to God
Avarice- it is unsatisfiable desire for wealth, a greediness that excludes sharing our
-earthly goods with the poor
Envy- it is to be resentful for a good thing which belongs to our neighbor, coupled with a
-desire to possess it too
Wrath- it is the strong vengeful anger to punish
Lust- it is uncontrolled sexual desire
Gluttony- it is the indiscriminate desire to eat and drink excessively
Sloth- it is spiritual laziness to do good

D. Evaluation
Make your own letter which asks for forgiveness from someone you want to
say sorry to.

E. Assignment
Make a reflection paper which consists of five (5) sentences about your
realization on the discussion of forgiving sins.
