The Two-Point Formula

In the point-slope formula y-y1 = m (x x1), we can substitute

in the place
of m to obtain y-

(x-

. This equation is called the two-point formula.

The formula can be best used when two points of the line are given.

Example:
Find the equation of the line whose graph includes the points (5, -1) and (2,3).

Solution:
Substituting the coordinates of the points (5, -1) and (2, 3) for (x1, y1) and (x2, y2),
respectively in the two-point formula, we obtain

(1) y y1 =

(2) y (-1) =
(

(
(3) y + 1 =

(

(4) y + 1 =

(

(5) 3y + 3 =

Which simplifies to 4x + 3y = 17.

Find the equation of the line that passes through the given points.

Important Terms/ Symbols to Remember
1.) The union of sets A and B, denoted by A B, is the set that contains those elements
that are either in A or in B, or in both.
An element x belongs to the union of the sets A and B if and only if belongs
to A or belongs to B. This tells us that
{ }

2.) The intersection of sets A and B, denoted by A B, is the set containing those
elements in both A and B.
An element x belongs to the intersection of the sets A and B if and only if
belongs to A and belongs to B. This tells us that
{ }
