Unlocking the Telnet Cosole

On Windows
Netgear provides a developer tool for unlocking the console access from a
Windows client. Windows NT and later versions are assumed to work,
administrator privileges are required. This was successfully tested on Windows
XP SP.
!ere"s the process#

8ogin to Windows using an account which has administrative privileges
-needed for sending custom crafted network packets which this tool does.
7ou will see a 39 Word doc which contains screenshots and instructions
in korean language, a firmware update -you don"t need this. and the
telnet:na,le.e;e tool
<pen a command line -windows console. window. To do so, press and
hold windows key, then press = once and release ,oth. /n the new
windows, type cmd, then press enter.
+et the 36> address of your Netgear router. 7ou can use either "arp 5a"
and use the "physical address" or look it up on the we, interface of your
router -Maintenance 5? Router status 5? LAN port 5? MAC Address.
>opy or type the 36> address to a te;t editor such as Notepad, Wordpad
or Write
=emove any minus signs -5. or colons -#., replace all characters ,y their
upper case representation -a 5? 6, d5? $ etc..
>opy the result of your editing to the clip,oard and return to the command
line window
type -without quotes. @telnetenable.exe @, the /P address of your router
-e.g. @192.168.1.1@., add another space -@ @., paste the contents of the
clip,oard, and append @ +earguy +eardog@. These are the default
username and password for telnet console access -they differ from those
of the we, interface., you need to modify them appropriately if you
changed them previously. The result should look similar to this#
telnetEnable.exe 192.168.1.1 000FB5A2BE26 Gearguy Geardog

Now press :nter to run the tool. /t should return to the shell pretty quickly
with no error. /f it takes a long time and returns a "send failed" error
message, Aust try again.
7ou should now ,e a,le to login to the router via telnet from any computer
in your local su,net -including the one you Aust used to activate the
listening mode.. To do so, type the following -no quotes.# @telnet @,
append the /P of your router and press enter -e.g. telnet 192.168.1.1.
7ou will ,e prompted for a login and a password. Bor the login, type
Gearguy, for the password, type Geardog. >orrect character case is
important here.
6fter successful authentication you will ,e presented a prompt such as
U12H02900>
Bor availa,le commands, type help or ?. To quit the console, type exit.
