Questions for Discussion
Question 1: Are ASEAN-Australia
relations a mismatch?
ASEAN values consensus and process,
Australia strives for results and progress.
ASEAN is inherently committed to
multilateralism, while Australia prioritizes
bilateral relationships with the major
Asian powers: China, Japan and India.
Questions for Discussion
Question 2: On the basis of your personal
experience how would you evaluate the
benefits and the downsides of student
exchanges for ASEAN-Australia relations?
ASEAN and Australia have placed a good
deal of stress on the importance of
people-to-people exchanges and
contacts.
Questions for Discussion
Without Australia, ASEAN would loose
very little, but without ASEAN Australia
could lose a great deal.
Question 3: Do you agree with this
statement and, if so, why? In not, why
not?
Questions for Discussion
Question 4: What are the pros and cons
of Australias membership in ASEAN? Is
Australian membership feasible?
Various Australian politicians and
academics, and some Southeast Asian
leaders, have raised the possibility of
Australia one day becoming a member of
ASEAN.
