Using this report
This report faithfully follows the process I would use to choose your wedding date
myself. Its a methodical process; over the years Ive streamlined it as much as
possible. But its essential that you follow EVERY step, even the ones that might
initially seem daunting, in order to find the best date possible. The report includes:
Step-by-step instructions to help you narrow down your search. Take notes
as you go, to save time in case the date you choose doesnt work for some
reason and you have to choose another. Dont skip steps!
Helpful tables at the back of the report that will make it easy to find Mercury
and Venus retrograde and other key periods.
Videos to demonstrate stuff thats a little hard to explain with words.
General Guidelines
There are no astrologically perfect wedding dates, because there are no perfect
marriages. There are no perfect marriages because there are no perfect people.
ABANDON THE DREAM OF PERFECTION!
Your marriage begins at the moment when you exchange vows not at the
beginning or ending of the ceremony or when the officiant announces I now
pronounce you husband and wife. If you have more than one wedding, the
first legally binding ceremony in which you exchange vows is considered the
astrologically meaningful one.
Aspects: In electional astrology, separating aspects symbolize events in the past.
Only approaching aspects are considered significant. Aspects are considered
in orb from the moment the faster-moving planet enters the sign in which it
will make the aspects.
Example: Saturn is at 17 Libra. From the moment the Moon enters Libra, its
considered to be approaching a conjunction with Saturn, even though a 17-

4 | P a g e April Elliott Kent for bigskyastrology.com
degree orb is normally considered much too wide to be signficant. When the
Moon has reached 18 degrees of Libra, the aspect is separating (past).
Dont try to find a date when the planets have perfect aspects with your birth
charts. Your first priority is to choose a date thats astrologically sound,
irrespective of your birth charts. Its like building a house; there are certain
structural requirements to be met before you start picking out tile for the
countertops. Finding a date that stands alone as a strong and harmonious chart
dramatically narrows the field of available dates. Simply, its unlikely youll be
able to find a date that is both astrologically sound AND that matches up with
both birth charts point by point.

Step 1: Define Your Search
Its your wedding; certain things are non-negotiable. Jewish couples probably
wont be getting married on Friday evening or Saturday before sundown. If youre
a Christian, you might have trouble getting your church for a Sunday ceremony.
Maybe you feel strongly against getting married on your birthday, on September
11, or on April Fools Day. All this is fine. But take a moment right now to get
clear, in your own mind, exactly what youre looking for nonastrologically
speaking.
Narrow it Down
1. In which YEAR(S) are you willing to get married?
2. In which MONTHS of the year?
3. On which DAYS OF THE WEEK are you willing to hold your ceremony?
4. At which HOURS OF THE DAY? (cross out any that just wont do)
10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.
12:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.
6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.
In the middle of the night, crack of dawn, whatever it takes

6 | P a g e April Elliott Kent for bigskyastrology.com
5. Holidays: How do you feel about getting married on holiday weekends?
Any particular ones that youd like to avoid? Or would a holiday weekend
wedding actually make your life easier?
6. Special occasions: How about birthdays, anniversaries, the date of
someones death, 9/11, Pearl Harbor day, the day John Lennon was shot, or
whatever other occasion whose joyous or grim associations might
overshadow Your Big Day?
Get a Calendar
Now GET A CALENDAR that includes all the potential months that youre
considering, and a big red pen. Youll want to PUT A BIG RED X on any date that
violates our sacred rules of wedding electional astrology. Or, you know, get some
stickers or something. Have some fun with it!
Tip: If youre looking at dates beyond the current year, you can create and
print out a calendar for any year (see a sample below) by going to:

Step 2: Avoid Wedding Tricksters
Mercury Retrograde
If possible, avoid dates when Mercury is retrograde. Mercury,
the planetary ruler of, among other things, contracts (including
marriage), is retrograde or appears to be moving backward in
its orbit several times each year, for about three weeks at a time. The symbolism
of Mercury retrograde suggests that one may not be seeing the whole picture and
that in time, new information may come to light that makes you rethink what you
started under its influence.
One exception might be a second marriage, when Mercury retrograde's symbolism
of "re-doing" might actually be appropriate. Still, its better to marry when
Mercury is direct, so take advantage of this exception only when you really have
no alternative.

When will Mercury be retrograde?

See TABLE A to find the dates, if any, when Mercury is
retrograde during the period youre considering for your
wedding. List them below and be sure to put a big red X
through these dates on your calendar!

Venus Retrograde
I beg you: Avoid dates when Venus is retrograde. Being an
ornery type, I was skeptical about this rule when I first
started electing wedding dates. Then I did a research project
and found that the marriages that began with Venus retrograde were a lot more
likely to have ended in divorce than those that began when Venus was direct. That
made a believer out of me.
Of course, Venus retrograde didnt make those marriages fail. Astrology reflects
our circumstances it doesnt cause them! Venus retrograde periods send a
message, though, that its time to reflect upon relationships, not to initiate action.
If you find yourself planning your wedding for a time when Venus is retrograde,
heed the wisdom of the retrograde, which urges you to take a second look at your
reasons for choosing to marry this person, at this time, and in this way. Venus is
retrograde for only forty days every eighteen months; you can almost always wait
for it to turn direct.

When will Venus be retrograde?
See TABLE B for the dates, if any, when Venus are retrograde
during the period youre considering for your wedding. List them
below, and be sure to put a big red X through these dates on
your calendar!

Step 3: Plant in Hospitable Soil
Avoiding the Suns square to Saturn
For some reason, marriages that begin when the
transiting Sun is approaching a square aspect to
transiting Saturn really struggle. I suppose its like
planting a seed in compacted soil and then watering and feeding it like mad it
tries like hell to grow, but it just doesnt get anywhere. So unless youre a glutton
for punishment, Id avoid marrying on days when the Sun is approaching a square
with Saturn.
THIS IS IMPORTANT Dont skip it!
In electional astrology, aspect is considered within orb from the moment the
faster-moving planet enters the sign where the aspect will complete. Eliminate all
the days between the Sun entering the sign and the day it makes the exact
square to Saturn.

Avoid Sun square Saturn!

See TABLE C to find the dates in your wedding date period, if
any, when the Sun will be approaching a square aspect to
Saturn. List them below and mark those dates on your
calendar with a big red X!

Step 4: Humor the Goddess of Marriage
Each planet contributes in its own way to a happy, spiffy wedding date
chart. But in particular Venus, the ruling planet of marriage itself, should
be as healthy as possible on your wedding date. This means placing her
in a strong sign (if possible) and definitely making sure shes in good aspect to
other planets.
Venus by Sign
Ideally you would like to see Venus in a sign in which its strong and happy;
say, Taurus, Libra, or Pisces. Likewise, you would avoid dates when Venus is in
signs that make her cranky, such as Aries, Scorpio, or Virgo.
HOWEVER this is a secondary consideration to Venus in good aspect with other
planets! Better a Venus in Aries with lots of good aspects than Venus in Libra
with horrible ones!

A Good Sign for Venus

your wedding date period. Here, list the dates you found with

Venus in aspect
AVOID Venus approaching a conjunction, square, or opposition to Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto.
AVOID Venus square or opposed Mars.
SEEK Venus approaching at least one conjunction, sextile, or trine to another
planet, or receiving one of these aspects from the Moon or Mercury.
What I like to do is find Venus very nicest aspects of the year to Mars and
Jupiter and try to build wedding dates around those. See Table D for a handy list
of these!

A Well-aspected Venus is a Happy Venus

Venus aspects during your wedding date period. List them here:

Step 5: Find compatibility
The Sun and Moon
Venus and Mars get all the sexy press but its the
relationship between the Sun and Moon in your wedding
chart that tells whether youve got the compatibility and
shared vision it takes to make a strong, happy marriage. A
difficult aspect between the Sun and Moon (square, opposition) indicates a couple
who are at cross purposes, while a harmonious aspect (conjunction, sextile, trine)
suggests youre able to enjoy each others company without a lot of drama. In my
own research, couples with a good Sun/Moon aspect in their wedding chart
seemed to find it easier to stay together and to be happy doing so!

Get a good aspect between the Sun and Moon
If you have an astrological calendar such as Jim Maynards (awesome)
Pocket Astrologer, this is a snap. The Moons aspects are listed for each day
of the year, right on the calendar! Just look for stuff like this:
, ,
You can also find these aspects online at astro.com. If youre not used to
reading an ephemeris, this might be a little overwhelming. Suck it up; I know
you can figure this out, because I did and believe me, Im no Einstein.
1. Go to http://www.astro.com
2. On the left menu, select Ephemeris > 6000 Years Ephemeris
3. Find the link to the YEAR when you plan to get married. To the
right of that link, there should be a link labeled A. Click that
link.
4. You: Gah!!
5. Me: Calm down.
6. Youll be looking for stuff that looks like this:
, ,
Remember, the ephemeris is calculated for Greenwich Mean Time.
Thats Greenwich England. So unless thats where you live, youll
need to do some adjusting:
U.S. Eastern Time Zone subtract 5 hours from times given
U.S. Central Time Zone subtract 6 hours from times given
U.S. Mountain Time Zone subtract 7 hours from times given
U.S. Pacific Time Zone subtract 8 hours from times given

Step 6: Give us this day our daily Moon.
The Moons Sign
Astrologically, the Moon in strongest in Taurus and Cancer. For a wedding chart,
its also nicely placed in Libra, the sign of marriage. The Moon is less happy in
Aries, Scorpio, and Capricorn.
So all things being equal, give deference to days when the Moon is in Taurus,
Cancer, or Libra. But MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE SUNS SIGN is its
aspects to other planets, especially the Sun, whether its Void of Course, and its
last aspect.
THINK YOURE DONE with the Moon? THINK AGAIN!
DONT just look for dates when the Moon in Taurus or Cancer! Theres
more to a good Moon than its sign!

those dates on your calendar with a big green circle!

The Void-of-Course Moon
Next we need to eliminate times when the Moon is Void-of-Course (VOC). When
the Moon has made its last major aspect in its sign, it is VOC until it enters the next
sign. The symbolism of a VOC moon is that "the matter comes to nothing;" this
might mean unforeseen circumstances prevent the wedding from taking place as
planned. If it does take place the couple may have a sense of being ineffectual and
unable to formulate or reach mutual goals.
The Moon's Last Aspect
The next factor for you to consider is the aspects the Moon will make before it
leaves its sign. Why is this important? Because a wedding chart will symbolically
continue to unfold (as we follow progressions in a natal chart) as long as the
marriage lasts...and often afterward! The moon, as the fastest moving body in the
wedding chart, symbolizes how things will progress on a day to day level in the
marriage. If the moon will make a number of fractious aspects between the time of
the wedding and the time the moon enters a new sign, what we end up with is a
marriage full of day to day disruption that can be quite hard on the nerves, and
subsequently undermine the relationship.
Most important of all is the Moons last aspect before leaving the sign, which
absolutely must be a positive one.
DONT SKIP THIS STEP because you think its too difficult! Its easy Ill
show you how:

Step 7n: Other Considerations
AVOID when possible days when:
the Sun, Moon, or Venus are
conjunct, square, or opposed
Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto.
AVOID eclipse days.
Eclipses are just too intense for a wedding chart.
AVOID days when planets (other than the Moon) are changing sign.
If the planet has already moved into the new sign and is sitting at 0 degrees,
thats not so bad. But planets at 29 degrees have a sense of urgency and
unbearable suspense about them. Tension abounds. Avoid them if you can!

Recap: The Rules for Choosing Your Wedding Date
The Essentials:
NO VENUS Rx!
AVOID the Sun approaching a square to Saturn
INCLUDE a good approaching aspect from the Moon to the Sun
AVOID void-of-course (VOC) Moon (this takes care of itself if you have a date
with the Moon approaching a good aspect to the Sun).
Still Pretty Darned Important:
AVOID Mercury Rx
INCLUDE a good final aspect from the Moon before it is VOC.
INCLUDE good aspect from Venus to another planet, or to Venus from the
Moon or Mercury.
AVOID Venus conjunct, square, or opposed Mars (conjunction okay), Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto.
Nice if you can get them, but not deal-breakers if you cant:
AVOID Moon in Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn unless very well aspected.
AVOID Venus in Aries, Virgo, or Scorpio if possible, unless very well aspected.
INCLUDE a good aspect between Venus and Mars for physical compatibility.
INCLUDE a waxing Moon (between New and Full) if possible, but its not as
important as a good Moon/Sun aspect. Many people choose a date with a
waxing Taurus or Cancer Moon and think theyve done their job. They havent.
INCLUDE a good approaching aspect to or from Saturn.

Step 8: Time the Ceremony
When the Marriage Begins
The marriage begins at the moment you exchange vows. Not when the ceremony
begins or ends, not when the officiant pronounces you husband and wife. Work
carefully with your officiant to time your ceremony so that you exchange vows at
the moment the chart is at its best.
Resources for Calculating the Chart
For this step, you really need to have access to software that will help you adjust
the timing on a chart easily, or at least to calculate a lot of charts until you get the
result that you want. This is do-able for free at astro.com (see video for details):
Free:
If youre just planning to choose your own wedding date, you can get by with
Astro.coms free chart calculation service at www.astro.com. See the Timing the
Chart video for a demonstration.
Full-Service:
If you plan to do a lot of this kind of work, its worth your while to purchase a full-
service calculation program. As youll see in the video, it can make your life a little
easier. These are two I use:
Solar Fire is very popular and easy to use, but quite pricey.
http://alabe.com/solargold.html
Matrix Softwares Win*Star Express (a light version of its chart calculation
program), is a little less user-friendly but quite reasonably priced.

AVOID Sun, Moon, or Venus in the 6

AVOID placing Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto within about 10
degrees from the cusps of the 1
st

th

th
, and 10
th
houses if at all possible.
INCLUDE Ascendant: no fewer than 3, no more than 27 degrees rising. A fixed
sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) on the Ascendant is desirable.
INCLUDE, if possible, the Moon in good aspect to the planetary rulers of the
signs on the 4th and 10th house cusps. This symbolizes a good relationship
with and between the couples families.
Tips for Timing the Chart
Avoid the two-hour periods AFTER sunrise and sunset. These are the hours
when the Sun is likely to be in the sixth and twelfth houses, which are not
favored for marriage.
If the Sun is very close to a conjunction with Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune,
or Pluto on the day of your wedding (not a great idea anyway), youll probably
need to avoid the two hours BEFORE sunset, to avoid placing these planets in
the 7
th
house.
Avoid a difficult aspect between the planetary rulers of the signs on the first
and seventh houses.
Electional astrology relies on traditional rulerships, so Scorpio is ruled by Mars,
Aquarius by Saturn, and Pisces by Jupiter.
Big Sky Astrology Workshop Choosing a Wedding Date With Astrology
20 | P a g e April Elliott Kent for bigskyastrology.com
If you can avoid days when Venus is in difficult aspect to Mars, and when
Mercury is in difficult aspect to Jupiter, your job will be easier: between them,
these planetary pairs typically rule the 1
st
and 7
th
houses for about 16 hours out
of each day!
A good tip to handle this is to find the days best aspect and try to make
those planets the rulers of the 1
st
and/or 7
th
houses. So if theres a nice
Moon/Saturn trine on the day, make Cancer/Capricorn the signs on the
1
st
/7
th
houses.

But I couldnt find ANY good dates!
Friend, welcome to the electional astrologers nightmarish world!
If youve followed this tutorial carefully, its doubtful youve found any dates without
a couple of flaws so heinous that you believe they spell certain doom for your
marriage. But if there arent any that are even close to being good astrologically as
well as fitting with what you need logistically, it may be time to expand your search
to include additional months, years, or days of the week.
If youve found a couple of dates that you feel are pretty good, but youre a little
nervous and would like a second opinion? I can do that for you. Youll find details
here: http://weddingastrology.com
Completely freaked out and ready to put the whole thing in someone elses hands?
Hey, no worries I can do that for you too. But unless youre an absolute beginner at
astrology, it youve followed this tutorial carefully its highly unlikely Ill be able to
find anything better in the same time period.
At the end of the day
Dont tell anyone I said this, but plenty of people get married on astrologically
horrible dates and do just fine. Yes, even some who marry when Venus is retrograde.
Whats more important than anything else is the desire you both have to make your
marriage a success. If youre both determined to do whatever it takes to have a
successful marriage, I feel confident that you will.

A note about these tables: All the dates in these tables are based on Greenwich

turning retrograde or direct, aspecting something, entering or leaving a sign
and how far you live from Greenwich, England, some dates might be off by one
day in either direction. Youll figure that out when you go to cast your individual
