51#1!% Creep Crac0ing
Creep is dependent on ti)e2 te)perature2 and stress. Creep
crac'ing )a$ e%entuall$ occur at design conditions2 since
so)e piping code allo:a!le stresses are in the creep range.
Crac'ing is accelerated !$ creep and fatigue interaction :hen
operating conditions in the creep range are c$clic. #he
inspector should pa$ particular attention to areas of high
stress concentration. If e.cessi%e te)peratures are encountered2
)echanical propert$ and )icrostructural changes in
)etals also )a$ ta'e place2 :hich )a$ per)anentl$ :ea'en

6.1.2 Close-Inter%al Potential Sur%e$
#he close-inter%al potential sur%e$ perfor)ed at ground le%el o%er the !uried pipe can !e
used to locate acti%e corrosion points on the pipe>s surface.
Corrosion cells can for) on !oth !are and coated pipe
:here the !are steel contacts the soil. Since the potential at
the area of corrosion :ill !e )easura!l$ different fro) an
ad=acent area on the pipe2 the location of the corrosion acti%it$ can !e deter)ined !$ this
sur%e$ techni8ue.
6.1.3 Pipe Coating 5olida$ Sur%e$
#he pipe coating holida$ sur%e$ can !e used to locate
coating defects on !uried coated pipes2 and it can !e used on
ne:l$ constructed pipe s$ste)s to ensure that the coating is
intact and holida$-free. (ore often it is used to e%aluate coating
ser%icea!ilit$ for !uried piping that has !een in-ser%ice
for an e.tended period of ti)e.
7ro) sur%e$ data2 the coating effecti%eness and rate of
coating deterioration can !e deter)ined. #his infor)ation

6.1.4 Soil esisti%it$
Corrosion of !are or poorl$ coated piping is often
