WE REPRESENT
100 YEARS OF INNOVATION
Our journey to becoming one of
the worlds best universities began
in 1907 with the merger of three
great institutions:
f the Royal College of Science
f the City and Guilds College
f the Royal School of Mines
Further mergers over the years
with institutions including St Marys
Hospital Medical School, the
National Heart and Lung Institute,
the Charing Cross and Westminster
Medical School and the Royal
Postgraduate Medical School, and
the formation of Imperial College
Business School, have extended our
science and engineering expertise
into the complementary felds
of medicine and business.
In just over 100 years, we have
grown from a College with 600
students and 12 professors to one
of the worlds top 10 universities
with more than 15,500 full- and part-
time students and more than 3,000
academic staf and researchers.
Imperial College London is the
only UK university to focus entirely
on science, engineering, medicine
and business. Our international
reputation for excellence in teaching
and research sees us consistently
rated in the top fve UK universities
and in the top 10 worldwide.
This makes an Imperial degree
highly valued by employers across
the world.
WERE GLOBALLY RECOGNISED
FOR OUR RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
Our contributions to society have been recognised
over the years with the award of 14 Nobel Prizes
and two Field Medals to people who have taught
or studied at Imperial. Most recently, Imperials
Professor Chris Toumazou has been awarded the
2013 Royal Society Gabor Medal for his engineering
solutions for DNA analysis. The medal is named afer
former Imperial physicist Dennis Gabor who won
the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention
and development of holography, which is found
on items like bank notes and passports.
The real-world application of our research work
has been central to our mission since our foundation
and we remain committed to this, as demonstrated
by developments like the 150 million Research and
Translation Hub that will be the showpiece of our
new Imperial West Campus (see page 53).
WERE WELL
CONNECTED
Our location in London sets us
in the heart of an international
community of business, academia,
healthcare and commerce.
Weve made the most of it by
forming close partnerships with
hundreds of external organisations
both locally and globally. These
real-world partnerships help to
keep our research relevant to
those who need it most.

about imperial
Life as a Masters student
TEACHING STYLE
Masters level study involves
learning new technical skills,
and requires you to think
about concepts and methods
more critically and more
deeply. You will still attend
lectures, seminars and labs
(if appropriate to your subject).
However you will be expected
to spend much of your time
working independently or
in groups, and group work
may form part of your
assessment.
Your lecturers will: teach on
the programme; give you reading
lists; make support materials
available; set practicals, formal
and less formal assessments;
ofer research projects (although
for some courses you may be
expected to develop ideas about
these yourself ); and give you
feedback on your progress
in various ways. You need to
take these opportunities and
shape them to your own needs
and interests.
Masters level study at Imperial is
designed to be challenging. It represents
a step change from undergraduate study,
and a readjustment back to education
for those coming from the world of work,
but you will get plenty of support from the
College to help you achieve your potential
and get the most out of your experience.
STUDY INTENSITY
Masters level study is a progression
from undergraduate work and is usually more
specialised, interdisciplinary, or orientated to
a specifc profession. It is also more intellectually
demanding and challenging than undergraduate
study. For example: the pace of lecturing is likely
to be signifcantly faster; you will be expected
to undertake more directed background reading
during the course; and you will be expected
to arrive at solutions for yourself.
Most of our Masters degrees are available
on a full-time basis and normally last 12 months
with little break, requiring a commitment to
a sustained period of intensive work right from
the start. There are also some two and three
year part-time programmes (see pages 8495
for details).
Most postgraduate students feel under time
pressure at some point. This is normal and is
a reflection of the intensity and amount of work
to undertake. The Graduate Students Union
and Graduate School organises lots of events
throughout the year to help you maintain a good
worklife balance and we will encourage you
to get involved (see pages 6061).
13 POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS
DOING PAID WORK
WHILE YOU ARE STUDYING
Our degrees are very demanding
so we recommend that full-time
students do not take up part-
time work during term-time.
If this is unavoidable we advise
you to work no more than 1015
hours per week, which should
be principally at weekends.

Postgraduate Certifcates and Diplomas
Imperial ofers a range of part-time Postgraduate
Certifcates (PG Cert) and Diplomas (PG Dip), which
can be taken as stand-alone programmes or, in some
cases, can be used to build towards a higher
level award.
A PG Cert has a credit value of at least 30 ECTS and
typically involves nine months part time study. A PG
Dip is similar but typically lasts two years part-time
and therefore has a credit value of at least 60 ECTS.
These are not available on all advanced programmes
so please check our course list on pages 8495
for details.
15 POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS
RESEARCH PROJECT
We place great emphasis on the integration of our
Masters level courses with our world class research
portfolio. Your degree will normally include a signifcant
piece of research that will be submitted as a report
or dissertation. You may also undergo a viva (oral
examination) on your work. MRes students may undertake
more than one project, with this component accounting
for more than 50 per cent of the fnal degree award.
The quality of your own understanding, thinking and
initiative are very important in the research project,
demonstrated by posing questions and seeking answers,
using and applying techniques and research skills,
analysing data, and reviewing literature.
On most programmes there is a period of several
months with little scheduled teaching when the bulk
of the research project is carried out, requiring you
to plan your time efectively.
Your project will normally be supervised by an
academic member of staf. However, they may delegate
much of the day-to-day supervision to a member of
their team, such as a PhD student, who can give you
more practical advice.
TRAINING AND SUPPORT
Your course director, personal tutor
(for larger courses) and lecturers are
the frst point of contact for help
and support in your studies. They
can, for example, set up extra study
opportunities, such as extra reading,
teaching or online study. We also
encourage you to take advantage
of any training courses ofered, like the
Graduate Schools MasterClasses which
are specifcally designed to develop
the personal and professional skills of
Masters level students (see page 30).
The Library also ofers one-to-one or
group training sessions to develop
your search skills (see page 50).
Every department has a staf
student committee, where elected
representatives from the student body
input into the teaching that takes place
within the department. We also have
a College-wide support network to
look afer your general wellbeing
(see pages 5457).
All new postgraduate students are
invited to attend Welcome Week at the
start of their frst term. This includes
a programme of activities, talks and
events for postgraduates to introduce
you to College life, current students
and staf.

TYPES OF PhD
The most common doctoral programme is the PhD
and the majority of Imperials PhD students attend
the College on a full-time basis. However, some
choose to attend part-time, involving one to three
days of study per week. Alternatively, students may
choose one of our other types of PhD which are
described below.
JOINT PhDS
Our Joint PhD scheme gives you the chance to draw
on the research facilities and expertise available at
Imperial and one of our partner universities overseas.
We currently have opportunities with: the University
of Hong Kong (HKU); Nanyang Technological University
(NTU); the National University of Singapore (NUS);
and the University of So Paulo in Brazil in the feld
of aeronautics. You will divide your time between and
have a supervisor from each university and your fnal
degree will be awarded jointly by both institutions.
PARTNER RESEARCH INSTITUTION
SCHEME (PRI)
If you work in a public research institution, industrial
research laboratory or at another university then you
may be able to register for a PhD at Imperial but carry
out the research where you work, under our partner
research institution (PRI) scheme.
You should expect to spend at least two months per
year at the College and the qualifcation is awarded
by Imperial only.
One of our major PRI schemes is with Singapores
Agency for Science, Technology and Research
(A*STAR), which sees students spend two years
in Singapore and two years in London.
OTHER RESEARCH QUALIFICATIONS
We also ofer two other doctoral level qualifcations:
f MD(Res) clinicians can study for an MD(Res)
which is ofen shorter and more focused on
clinical research
f EngD this four-year programme includes
an industrial placement
17 POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS
Doing a PhD is completely diferent
from doing a BSc. You are required
to work alone, to come up with ideas,
to be motivated and organised
without necessarily having someone
telling you what to do. You dont have
one text book that you have to study
from in order to do well at the exams.
You have to think on your own about
what steps are needed to fnd the
solution to a problem that has not
been encountered before.

PLANNING YOUR TIME
Full-time students should aim to complete their
PhD in 36 months. All students must submit their
thesis for examination no later than 48 months
from the date of initial registration. To stay on
track, you must complete your research plan within
the frst three months in consultation with your
supervisor, whom you will meet regularly.
In the early stage (09 months), you will undertake
an assessment which involves the submission of
a written report and an oral examination on the
report. The Graduate School provides training in
key skills such as presenting, statistics, writing and
personal efectiveness that will help you prepare.
In the mid-stage (918 months), you will continue
with your programme of research and should take
the opportunity to undertake further professional
skills training in advanced writing and presenting,
career planning and maintaining motivation
and independence.
Around the end of your second year, you will
undertake a late stage assessment (1824
months), conducted by your department, which
will test whether you have a realistic research
plan in place for successfully completing
the programme.
Throughout the programme, you will also take a
full part in academic life, attending seminars and
presenting your research both within the College
and at national and international conferences.
TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES
Many PhD students across
the College are involved with
the teaching, supervision and
assessment of both undergraduate
and Masters students.
Working as a Graduate Teaching
Assistant (GTA) provides you with
an opportunity to broaden your
experience, and develop further
skills such as learning how to
convey complex technical concepts
and writing/communication. You
may also fnd that acting as a GTA
helps improve your own technical
abilities (both theoretical and
practical). It also enables you to
broaden your knowledge base
and gain communication and task
management experience.
If this is something you would be
interested in undertaking then you
must frst seek permission from your
supervisor and complete the relevant
training programme provided by your
department and by the Colleges
Educational Development Unit.
COHORT-BASED
DOCTORAL TRAINING
Imperial is home to a number
of prestigious doctoral training
centres, known as Centres for
Doctoral Training (CDTs) for focused
programmes and Doctoral Training
Partnerships (DTPs) for general
programmes. These ofer a new
model for doctoral study by recruiting
cohorts of PhD students each year.
The students, who all begin their
research and training at the same
time, beneft from being in a highly
interdisciplinary environment,
made up of researchers drawn
from across the College.
Working as part of a cohort and
receiving training together from
the Graduate School enables you
to form close bonds and support
each other as you take on the
challenge of a four-year integrated
PhD programme (usually beginning
with a one-year MRes or MSc,
followed by a three-year PhD).
Imperials CDTs and DTPs are funded
by the government research councils
and some charitable organisations,
including the Wellcome Trust.
The Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
also funds four-year technical and
management training programmes
within our Industrial Doctorate
Centres (IDCs). These are an
industry-orientated variant of the
CDT model, involving an EngD project
jointly supervised by a company
and an industrial placement, which
normally accounts for 75 per cent
of the programme.
For a list of current centres, see:
www.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus/
doctoraltraining
YOUR THESIS
The main activity of any research
programme will be to carry out
an original research project under

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS
OF THE PHENOME
Ongoing genomics research is
helping scientists to understand why
some people develop diseases, but most
common diseases are influenced by
both genetic and environmental factors,
such as diet and lifestyle.
Now, researchers from Imperial and Kings
College London are working together in
the MRC-NIHR Phenome Centre to analyse
phenomes the biological results of
peoples genes and environment. This should
help determine the causes of disease and
indicate how treatments can be tailored
for individual patients.
The scientists will be examining around
100,000 samples every year, using millions
of pounds worth of nuclear magnetic
resonance and mass spectrometry
technology to give the most accurate
readings to date of the exact chemical
make-up of peoples blood and urine.
The centre is a collaboration between the
two universities, the analytical technology
companies Waters Corporation and Bruker
Biospin, the Medical Research Council, and
the National Institute for Health Research.
BODY
DOUBLE
Parts of a cars bodywork could
double up as its battery, thanks to a
new material being developed by Imperial
engineers and scientists and European
Union partners, including Volvo.
The material can store and discharge
electrical energy, and it is also strong and
light enough to be used for parts in future
hybrid vehicles, to make them lighter,
more compact and more energy efcient.
The researchers have recently used the
material to create a prototype car boot.
HOW TO
PUT A HUMAN
ON MARS
Imperial scientists and engineers
spent weeks creating and flming
a mock manned mission to Mars
in 2013, in a collaboration between
the College and the BBC.
For the fve part How to put a human
on Mars programme, researchers
designed a mission that involved
sending a three-person crew to
the red planet aboard a small craf.
This capsule would rotate to generate
artifcial gravity, use a heat shield
to protect itself against solar flares,
and descend to the Martian landing
site using multiple parachutes.
It is part of our founding mission to make
a demonstrable economic and social impact,
through the translation of our work into practice
worldwide. Imperial is particularly well known
for its support of interdisciplinary research,
with funding, infrastructure and cultural
encouragement to bring researchers together
across the disciplines to explore diferent
approaches to solving a problem.
For example, in 2012 we opened the
66m Imperial Centre for Translational and
Experimental Medicine. This flagship facility
has space for up to 450 scientists to accelerate
the translation of scientifc discoveries into new
ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating
diseases. We are also one of three university
partners in the new Francis Crick Institute,
which will bring together multidisciplinary
research expertise from leading scientifc
and academic organisations.
Within the university sector, Imperial
has led the way in technology transfer and
commercialisation of ideas, providing the
support and infrastructure to set up businesses
and license technologies, helping our research
to reach the people who need and want it.
Working with Imperial Innovations, we have
produced spin-out companies that have gone

PSYCHEDELIC SCIENCE
Two Imperial studies have provided the most detailed
picture to date of how psychedelic drugs work.
In the frst study, 30 healthy volunteers had psilocybin
the active ingredient in magic mushrooms infused into
their blood while they were inside magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) scanners.
SPRAY-ON FASHION
Imperial researchers have created a spray-
on fabric that enables designers to spray
liquid material directly onto the body,
using aerosol technology.
The fabric dries instantly, to make
innovative clothes that can be washed
and re-worn. Spanish fashion designer
Dr Manel Torres created the material
as part of his PhD in the Department
of Chemical Engineering, working
with Professor Paul Luckham.
He showcased his collection of spray-on
haute couture with a fashion show at the
College. Dr Torres has now set up a spin-out
company commercialising the research.
DRUGS LIVE
In a UK television frst,
Professor Nutt collaborated
with Channel 4 on two
hour-long programmes that
followed volunteers as they
took MDMA, the drug ecstasy
in pure form.
Novelist Lionel Shriver and
actor Keith Allen were among
those scanned with functional
magnetic resonance imaging,
to explore how MDMA afects
the resting brain. Professor
Nutt and colleagues are
investigating whether MDMA
could be used to treat post-
traumatic stress disorder.
The scans showed that
activity decreased in hub
regions of the brain areas
that are especially well-
connected with other areas.
The second study found that
psilocybin enhanced volunteers
recollections of personal
memories. This efect could make
psilocybin useful as an adjunct
to psychotherapy, suggest study
authors Professor David Nutt
and Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, from
the Department of Medicine.
ARTIFICIAL YEAST
Imperial researchers are building
a man-made chromosome, the UKs
contribution to the frst entirely
artifcial yeast.
Scientists hope to complete the
synthetic genome by 2017, and use it
to design new strains of Saccharomyces
cerevisiae yeast that can ultimately
create valuable chemicals, antibiotics,
vaccines or biofuels.
Imperial is one of the world leaders
in the feld of synthetic biology,
where researchers re-engineer cells
to develop microscopic devices that
can be used to address a range
of global challenges.
The College is home to a new
24 million centre called SynbiCITE
which aims to speed up the
development of these technologies.
It will be a national resource, involving
researchers from a further 17 academic
institutions across the UK as well as
13 industrial partners, including the
research arms of Microsof, Shell
and GlaxoSmithKline.

MALARIA
Staf in the Department of Life Sciences
are breeding mosquitoes and analysing
their interactions with the malaria parasite
Plasmodium in the hope of fnding new
ways to tackle the disease.
Malaria afects over 300 million people
every year. Mosquitoes, which are primarily
responsible for the transmission of the
disease, are bred and stored at a tropical
80 per cent humidity and 28C in our labs
in the Sir Alexander Fleming Building

CLIMATE CHANGE
ACROSS THE AGES
Dr Tina van de Flierdt, from the
Department of Earth Science and
Engineering, and colleagues from other
international universities, have been
looking into Antarcticas past to gain
insights into the Earths future.
They lived on a research vessel in the
Southern Ocean of Antarctica for nine
weeks as part of the Integrated Ocean
Drilling Program.
They drilled in waters up to four
kilometres deep and into sediment
up to one kilometre beneath the sea
floor, to explore how Antarctica has
been changing.
Back on dry land, Dr van de Flierdt
and Carys Cook, a PhD student in the
Grantham Institute for Climate Change,
analysed the samples and deduced
that global warming fve million years
ago may have caused one of Antarcticas
large ice sheets to partially melt and sea
levels to rise by approximately 20 metres.
This is signifcant because carbon
dioxide concentrations then were similar
to the levels currently found on Earth.
FISHING FOR ANSWERS
Imperial life scientists are using
transgenic zebrafsh, which express
green fluorescent protein, to explore
how inflammation and metabolic diseases
are linked to diet and lifestyle. With state-
of-the-art microscopes, the researchers
are looking inside living zebrafsh and
watching how immune cells are recruited
to sites of inflammation. They aim to better
understand conditions like diabetes
and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Since 2002, the organisation has
worked with 16 countries to map the
distribution of the disease and ofer
treatments to people infected, especially
school-aged children. In 2011, SCI was
rated by the non-proft organisation
GiveWell as one of the top two charities
worldwide for achieving impact.
SAFE DRINKING WATER
FROM RAINWATER
Imperial MBA students won the top
10,000 prize in the annual Innovation,
Entrepreneurship and Design Business
Plan Competition afer creating a water
purifcation unit that can be used in
developing countries to harvest rainwater
and turn it into drinkable water.
The Innovating Water team have already
successfully trialled their prototype device
in Kisumu, Kenya. For the competition,
they had to pitch their plans to professional
venture capitalists and angel investors.

Over nine million people died
as a consequence of high blood
pressure in 2010, making it the
health risk with the greatest
toll worldwide.
As part of the Global Burden
of Disease study, researchers
at Imperial compiled data from
around the world to estimate the
healthy life lost to various risk
factors (below). Smoking came
second, followed by indoor air
pollution a major problem in
developing countries where fuels
are burnt inside the home.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
Researchers in the Institute of Security
Science and Technology are exploring
how you can spot unusual activity on
social media sites such as Twitter, and
what patterns of activity might precede
a major criminal or terrorist event,
with a view to helping governments
to combat organised crime and
extremism. Institute scientists have
used similar techniques to help banks
to detect fraudulent activity on credit
cards, creating sophisticated systems
to spot anomalies.
INVISIBILITY CLOAK
Imperials Professor Sir John Pendry,
Department of Physics, is a condensed
matter theorist whose work has
underpinned the development of
the frst invisibility cloak.
He worked with researchers at Duke
University, USA, to create a prototype
cloaking device that renders an object
invisible to radar waves. Instead of
striking and reflecting of the object,
the waves flow smoothly around it as
if it were not there, giving the illusion
of transparency.
MISSION
TO JUPITER
In 2022, a new spacecraf is expected to
set of for an eight-year journey to Jupiter,
where it will explore the planets icy
moons and provide fresh insights into the
waterworlds orbiting the giant planets
in our solar system and beyond.
The primary target of the mission,
named Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE),
is the solar systems largest moon,
Ganymede, an icy world slightly larger
than the planet Mercury. Ganymede may
represent a whole class of potentially
habitable environments in our galaxy.
Professor Michele Dougherty from
Imperials Department of Physics led the
proposal for the mission, which is funded
by the European Space Agency. She is one
of a 15-strong Science Study Team from
institutions across Europe.
Developing countries could learn from Turkey
how to improve their health systems, according to
a researcher at Imperial College Business School.
Professor Rifat Atun presented his fndings to health
ministers from across the world at a conference in
2013. His work shows that death rates during childbirth
have dramatically fallen since the Turkish government
introduced an improved healthcare system called
the Health Transformation Programme.
This programme has rapidly expanded access
to healthcare services for all citizens, especially
benefting the poorest people in the country. The
report also found that improved access to healthcare
for expectant mothers has helped to reduce infant
and neonatal deaths in Turkey by more than 50 per
cent over the last ten years.

London may be a bustling metropolis,

Living in London
One of the fantastic things about London
is that you can explore the world without
even leaving the city. Expect to hear all
sorts of diferent languages being spoken
(over 300 in fact), encounter people of
all diferent faiths and backgrounds and
enjoy being able to buy goods from all
over the world.
But students who are seeking an
authentic British experience need not
fear, as London is still British at its heart.
You will see that in such spectacles as
the annual parade to honour the Queens
birthday (Trooping the Colour), historical
sites like St Pauls Cathedral and the
Tower of London, or in everyday activities
like a ride on an iconic red London bus.
Being a student in London, with
discounts on everything from clothes
to travel, makes it one of the most cost-
efective times to experience life in the
capital. And the even better news for
students is that many activities are free.
THEATRE
With over 40 theatres in the West
End alone, plus a huge choice of
fringe venues, London is world
famous for its theatre. Musicals are
a mainstay of the citys theatreland,
but its dramas and comedies also
draw much critical acclaim.
Back on campus, our students are

FUNDING OPTIONS
There are many sources of
postgraduate funding you can
explore, including studentships,
bursaries and grants.
Funding your studies
Completing a postgraduate
qualifcation at Imperial requires
a sustained commitment to
your studies right from the start.
We recommend budgeting
for student life well in advance
to make sure that funding
issues are not a barrier to you
achieving your goals and getting
the most out of your experience.
TUITION FEES
The tuition fee for your course covers the cost
of tuition, examinations, upkeep of facilities, and
membership of Imperial College Union. It does not
cover accommodation, books (though the University
library service has extensive provision) and general
living costs. How much you will pay will vary
depending on what you are studying and whether
you are from the UK/EU or an international student.
If youre applying for funding, you should budget
for a fve per cent increase in costs per year.
This includes an inflationary increase in your
tuition fees, unless otherwise specifed.
LIVING COSTS
Your living expenses will vary considerably
according to your lifestyle. Basic prices for
food, personal costs, bills and insurance
will be similar wherever you study.
However, costs such as accommodation
(see pages 6467) and travel (see page
70) reflect the higher cost of studying
in London. Opposite is a rough guide
to living costs for the academic year
201415, excluding tuition fees.
If you are studying full-time, you will be
exempt from Council Tax; you can also get
a 30% discount on certain season tickets

Provision of courses
Details of courses, including ECTS units, may change following
publication. For up-to-date information, please check the relevant
pages on our website.
www.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus
The College will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver courses
in accordance with the descriptions set out on the website. However,
it reserves the right to make variations to the content of methods
of delivery of courses, to discontinue courses and to merge or combine
courses, if such action is reasonably considered to be necessary
by the College in the context of its wider purposes. If the College
discontinues any course, it will use reasonable endeavours to
provide a suitable alternative course.
Equivalent and lower qualifcations
From 200910, the government has withdrawn funding for second
degree students who are studying for a qualifcation that is at
equivalent or lower level than a qualifcation that they have already
been awarded. This change means that institutions may charge
a supplementary fee for such students in order to compensate for
the withdrawal of government funding. At present Imperial makes
no extra charge although this is subject to change.
Payment terms
All new taught postgraduate entrants will be required to pay
a deposit as a condition of their ofer. The deposit is set at 10 per
cent of the previous years course fee and will automatically be
deducted from the full fee invoice. An invoice for the deposit, which
will clearly show the date by which payment must be made, will be
sent to the candidate via email within fve working days of their
acceptance of a conditional ofer. An invoice for the balance of the
fees will then be sent to the candidate via email within fve working
days of full and fnal (unconditional) acceptance by the College.
For sponsored candidates, receipt of the original of an ofcial letter
from the sponsoring organisation, indicating what the sponsorship
covers and addressed to Imperial College London, will be required.
In such cases, diferent arrangements for payment may apply.
Data Protection
Imperial College London processes certain personal data of its staf and
students for standard university administrative processes. Any processing
of personal data by the College will be made in accordance with the
Colleges Data Protection Policy and the Data Protection Act 1998.
