THEORY:

This test done in accordance with ASTM C131.The Los Angeles test is a measure of degradation
of mineral aggregates of standard grading resulting from a combination of action including
abrasion and grinding in a rotating steel drum containing a specified number of steel
spheres. The number steel charges depend upon the amount and grading of the test sample. As
the drum rotates, a self-plate picks up the sample and the steel spheres, carrying them until
they are dropped to the opposite site of the drum creating an impact-crushing effect. The
contents then roll within the drum with an abrading and griding action until the self plate
impacts and the cycle is repeated. After the prescribed number of revolutions, the content are
removed from the drum and the aggregates portion is sieved to measure the degradation as
percent loss. Therefore, an L.A abrasion loss value of 40 indicates that 40% of the original
sample passed through the NO.12 (1.70 MM) sieve.

APPARATUS:

Los Angeles Abrasion Machine.

PROCEDURE:
1. The grading to be used in the test has been selected. It has been chosen such that it
conforms to the grading used in the construction, to the maximum extent possible.
2. Took 5 kg of sample for grading A, B, C, and D.
3. The abrasive charge has been chosen as in Table 2.
4. Opened the cover and fed the aggregates and the steel balls in the cylinder. The cover
was replaced tightly.
5. Rotated the machine at uniform speed of 30 to 33 revolutions per minute.
6. Allowed the machine to run to 500 revolutions for grading A, B, C, and D.
7. Stopped the machine after desired number of revolutions.
8. Removed the dust cover and took out material.
9. Separated the steel balls and sieve the material on 1.70mm IS sieve.
10.Washed the material coarser than 1.70mm size.
11.Dried it in the oven to a constant weight and weigh to an accuracy of 1 g.
12.Calculated the percentage of loss of material.
13.Took another sample and repeat the experiment. Found the mean of two values and
reported it as Los Angeles Abrasion Value

C 8 3330 25
D 6 2500 25

PRECAUTIONS:
1. The cover should be fixed before rotating the machine.
2. All material should be discharged from the cylinder after the conduct of test.

Record of observation:
Aggregate grade used A/B/C/D
Original weight of the sample (w) M =5000 g.
Weight of aggregate retained on 1.70 mm is sieve W Ma=3.939.

Loss of weight (w-w) =1061

Percentage wear (w1-w2 w1) 100

Los angeles abrasion value =21.22%

Question:

1. State your group discussion and conclusion on data-data you achieve.

From the experiment, we get the value is 21.22 % less than the requirement of
JKRs; 30 %.Aggregate physical property are lower Los Angeles abrasion is
tougher and more resistance to abrasion. We can conclude that the aggregate
been used are medium tough and not moreresistant to abrasion. Its because the
value are more than half than JKRs requirement.Lower Los Angeles abrasion loss
values indicate aggregate that is tougher and moreresistant to abrasion

2. Elucidate what this experiment purpose conduction..

The Los Angeles abrasion is a common test method used to indicate aggregate
toughness and abrasion characteristics. Aggregate abrasion characteristics are
important because the constituent aggregate must resist crushing, degradation
and disintegration in order to produce a high quality.

3. Why sample need to be washed and dried before and after this experiment is
conducted.

To know the weight loss of before abration and after abration . Its may affected
the weight of the sample. Its because dust from previous project will affect the
reading of the scale.

4. How does impact occur in the test.

The L.A. abrasion test measures the degradation of a coarse aggregate sample
that is placed in a rotating drum with steel spheres . As the drum rotates the
aggregate degrades by abrasion and impact with other aggregate particles and
the steel spheres (called the charge). Once the test is complete, the calculated
mass of aggregate that has broken apart to smaller sizes is expressed as a
percentage of the total mass of aggregate. Therefore, lower L.A. abrasion loss
values indicate aggregate that is tougher and more resistant to abrasion

5. An aggregate sample is found to be having LA Abrasion value of 37. For which type of
road constructions it may be used?

Conjuction road
