Lesson Objective

Do Now

By the end of the lesson, we will be able to ____________________________________

(AZ-7.RP.A.1) Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or
different units.

Comparing Unit Rates

1. Classmates Francois and Jean-Claude are assigned an essay. After a few hours of writing, they
text one another to check on each others progress. Francois has written a total 540 words in
three hours and Jean-Claude, who took a nap, has written 420 words in two hours. Which
classmate writes at a faster rate? Show your work to justify your answer.

Sample Dividing Fractions Problem
Jerome went to the local farmers market and purchased three-fourths of a bushel of
apples for him and his friends back home to share. He shared the bushel evenly with a
total of fifteen people, himself included. How much of the bushel did each person get?

A number that is ____________
Mr. Walker bought Dunkin Donuts for his
staff on Friday morning. In all, he brought in
three-fifths of a pound of sprinkled donuts. If
eighteen teachers ate the donuts, and each ate
an equal portion, how many pounds of donuts
did each teacher eat?

Step 1: Write the algorithm

Step 2: Rewrite the algorithm

Step 3: Multiply and reduce the answer
Taylor hosted breakfast at her house. She
bought six-sevenths of a gallon of orange
juice for everyone to share equally. A total of
8 people drank all of the juice. How much
juice did each person consume?

Step 1: Write the algorithm

Step 2: Rewrite the algorithm

Guided Practice

.

Practice A. In a school, there was a severe shortage of classrooms. 24 children had to
share 2/3 of a classroom. How much of the classroom did each student get?

Practice B. Nelson measured out 2/4 of a cup of detergent to be added to his three
loads of laundry. How much detergent goes into each wash?

Practice C. A kitchen holds a 3/4-pound bag of flour. There are 12 recipes that a chef
wants to make. How much flour will each recipe get?

Steps: Finding Unit Rate

1. Write the expression as a division problem

2. Rewrite the division problem to multiply by two fractions

3. Reduce the answer to most simplified terms

Choosing: Proportions or Division

Deciding what skill we want to use can be tricky. Read the word problems below and
choose from one of two strategies we have seen recently. Solve the problem

1. Bob has a big pie from his bakery. A few pieces are eaten, but he wants to share the
remaining 5/8 with his family. He divides the rest of the pie by seven when he gets
home. How much of the pie does each family member get?

Choose: Proportion or Division

2. Samuel used 2/5 of a pound of gelatin mix to make 2/15 pound of Jell-O. How much
mix is required to make a pound of his Jell-O dessert?

Choose: Proportion or Division

3. Sallie eats one-fourth of an apple in three-eighths of a minute. At what rate does she
eat the apple?

Choose: Proportion or Division

Rate of Change Review

Write a proportion to solve for the unit rate.

Practice A. A family went on vacation and forgot to get a dog-sitter. They left a whole
bag of dog food that weighed 68 pounds and were gone for six days. When the family
returned there were 26 pounds of dog food left. What is the unit rate in pounds per day?

Practice B. In March, a gallon of milk cost $1.99. At the beginning of October five
months later the price had risen to $2.49 per gallon. What was the rate of change in
the price of milk over the course of those five months?

Practice C. Meg collects magnets for her fridge. She had thirteen when she started
counting and after seven months her total had risen to twenty-seven. At what rate did
Megs magnet collection grow?

Practice D. At time = 0 seconds, a bat is at a height of 100 feet. At time = 20 seconds,
the bat is at a height of 300 feet. What is the rate of change in altitude with respect to
time?

Independent Practice

Write a proportion to solve for the unit rate.

Practice A. In Minnesota, record snowfall hit the Twin Cities. On the Friday before the
storm, only one inch of snow had been recorded. After the storm ended on Sunday, two
days later, there were thirteen inches of snow on the ground. At what rate did the snow
fall over the period of two days?

Practice B. In February, a carton of eggs cost $1.06. At the beginning of October six
months later the price had risen to $1.72 per carton. What was the rate of change in
the price of eggs over the course of six months?

Practice C. Melissa collects magnets for her fridge. She had four when she started
counting and after eight months her total had risen to thirty-six. At what rate did
Melissas magnet collection grow?

Practice D. At time = 0 seconds, an eagle is at a height of 100 feet. At time = 7
seconds, the eagle is at a height of 149 feet. What is the rate of change in altitude with
respect to time?
