1)* INTRODUCTION
Material and equipment need to be constantly moved. The mechanical
technician will need to move spares and machinery from the workshop to site,
and visa versa. Objects may require to be lifted manually or by mechanical
means. All means of lifting must be carried out safely to avoid accident and
injuries.
+)* MANUAL LIFTING
hen lifting objects manually, the mechanical technician should learn to take
the strain with the legs by placing the feet together, bending the knees and
keeping the back straight. A firm hand grip is essential. !ands should be
protected by gloves when lifting sharp"edged components.
+)1 LIFTING CORRECTL,
The wrong method of lifting can lead to ruptures, strained backs, sprains,
slipped discs, and other painful injuries. #revention is always better than the
cure, and since there is no complete cure for back injuries, it is better to
prevent them in the first place. $ack injuries, ranging from temporary muscle
damage, to permanent %disc% trouble, can occur from lifting incorrectly.
&f you have to lift a weight on your own, follow the instructions below, or better
still use a hoist.
'. (rouch as close as you can with your legs bent.
). *eep the back as straight as possible.
+. ,et a firm grip, beware of grease coatings.
-. To lift, straighten your legs, keeping the back as straight as you can.
.. (arry the load, so your hands are protected at all times, and so you
can see over it. /0ee 1ig. '2"'"'3
#rotective clothing should be worn to prevent crushed toes, cuts,
splinters, or burns. Team lifting should be carried out for very heavy
lifting, but remember there should only be one captain to give the
orders. &deally, all men in the team should be of similar build and
physique.

The movement of material is the biggest single cause of industrial
accidents. Manual handling accidents can be traced to one of the
following4
