IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME
In the case of the Duluth Public Library, this familiar saying could be rephrased, If you
open it, they will come. Beginning in January 2012, the library and its two branches,
West Duluth and Mt. Royalwhich had been limping along at less than twenty
hours a week each and were scheduled to close for goodwere instead opened to
the public full-time, thanks to the voters of Duluth, who supported a referendum.
And once the libraries were open full-time, the response from the community
was staggering.
Thousands of people signed up for new library cards. Children and parents
showed up in droves for storytime sessions. New programming started for teens
and the teens showed up. On the days that area schools let out early, children poured
into the library to watch free movies. Use of the library computers tripled, as library
customers applied for jobs or just checked their email. People gathered outside the
library each morning, waiting for the doors to open, knowing that they would.
Even some skeptics changed their views. I voted against the referendum,
admitted a library user at Mt. Royal, but Im glad it passed, because now
I come here almost every day!
In 2013 and into the future, the library will continue to enhance its
programming and services to the community.
The Duluth Library Foundation is grateful to each and every donor
for making it possible for the Foundation to help fund new and
ongoing library programming. Your gifts make the differenceyou
help keep your library strong.

SHE LEFT A LASTI NG LEGACY
Beverly Ellstrom was originally from Minnesotas Iron Range. In her young adulthood, she was drawn
to Duluth, leaving her home and her mother behind to seek her future. Beverly succeeded in securing
a job at the Duluth News Tribune. For forty-six years, she worked in the accounting department, where
she participated in the transition from adding machines and manual typewriters to calculators and
personal computers.
After her retirement, Beverly did not slow down. She was an active member of several community groups.
She had many friends, and neighbors knew they could count on her for a ride to the doctor or the grocery
store. She was close to her mother. She had no children.
When she died, Beverly left a charitable gift to the Duluth Library
Foundation. Her generous gift reected the value she placed on the
library . . . and on leaving a legacy. A plaque commemorating
Beverly and her mother, Louise Ellstrom, was placed on the
Foundation donor wall at the library.
Beverlys gift of nearly $69,000 was added to the Duluth Library
Foundations endowment, where it will continue to generate
income for the library in perpetuity. Noting this, Patra Sevastiades
of the Duluth Library Foundation said, with gratitude, Ms. Ellstroms
thoughtful gift will help to sustain the library for generations
to come.
If you would like to learn how to leave a planned gift, please contact Patra Sevastiades
at (218) 730-4236 or at duluthlibraryfoundation@gmail.com.

TAKE A SEAT AT THE LIBRARYOUTSIDE!
This summer, foot trafc on the upper plaza of the main library has proliferated,
thanks to the generosity in 2012 of two community partners, the Lloyd K.
Johnson Foundation and Loll Designs. The Duluth Library Foundation, in
coordination with library staff, developed a vision for the plaza, and the two
organizations agreed to support it. The result was gorgeous new outdoor
furniture on the librarys upper plaza: the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation provided
a grant to purchase the stunning furniture, sun umbrellas, and trash receptacle,
and Loll Designs donated a portion of the cost of the all-weather furniture, which
is manufactured in Duluth.
Its a win-win for Duluth, and it is a great example of enhancing an underutilized
city space, Mayor Don Ness noted at the press conference where the furniture
was formally unveiled. He thanked the Duluth
Library Foundation for partnering with the two
Duluth-based organizations for the benet
of the library.
Mayor Ness was joined by Joan Gardner-
Goodno, executive director of the Lloyd K.
Johnson Foundation, and Greg Benson, CEO of
Loll Designs.
Im delighted that we are part of this wonderful
project, said Gardner-Goodno at the press
conference. The addition of the furniture to a
public space will benet our community.
Mayor Don Ness joins Greg Benson, Joan Gardner-Goodno and library advocates at
the unveiling of the new outdoor furniture at the library.
Greg Benson, Patra Sevastiades and
Joan Gardner-Goodno worked
together on the project.

The library thrives again!
In 2012, the Duluth Public Library offered more open hours, rejuvenated programming, and expanded access to print and
electronic resources. Library visits increased 22% from 2011, including a startling 61% jump at the two branches. Library
users checked out almost one million items. It was gratifying and reassuring to see the library resume its role as a hub for
cultural, civic, and recreational activities.
Foundation donors like you helped to make this happen. Your gifts to the Foundation, which ranged from several
dollars to a very generous bequest from the estate of Beverly Ellstrom, a library lover like you and me, made a difference.
Our endowment grew to $901,980, a remarkable jump of 18%. This growth, fueled by your generosity, helped the
Foundation to signicantly enhance many library services.
Each year, the Foundation enacts its mission by giving up to 80% of endowment earnings to the library. In 2012, that equaled $15,569. In 2012,
the Foundation also gave $24,926 for library materials, services, and programs. This included grant money for new outdoor furniture, funding
for a postcard announcement of the librarys expanded hours, co-sponsorship of Duluths One Book, One Community program, funding for
new library materials, and the design and marketing of coffee mugs that proudly display the librarys book mural. We also created a new
Foundation website (please visit us at www.duluthlibraryfoundation.org). All told, the Foundation gave $40,495 to benet the library in 2012.
We were honored that Mayor Don Ness and the Duluth City Council joined us to co-host the rst Libations at the Library, a delicious
wine-and-hors doeuvres event that brought people to the library after hours for good food and conversation. Please join us for our second
Libations event on December 3, 2013!
As we celebrate our accomplishments in 2012, we also look forward. The Foundation is approaching an endowment of $1 million. Your
continued generosity will help us attain this milestone and, even more importantly, help us sustain the librarys momentum in perpetuity.
As the library evolves, the Foundation will help to sustain it. We hope you will continue to be a partner in our efforts.
Thank you for your unwavering support of the Duluth Library Foundation.

6 DULUTH LI BRARY FOUNDATION 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
Terry Teich helped start the Duluth Library
Foundation twenty-three years ago. She served on
its board for eighteen years. She was the rst
person to become a member of the Legacy Circle.
Duluth is my hometown. Over the years,
I have visited many of our communitys
libraries: as a child, student, educator, and
an adultenjoying the books, media,
services, and programs.
The old Carnegie Library was my high school
reference library. Today, the electricity of the library
is energizing as it bustles with activity, changing and
expanding with the technology and the times.
For me, having volunteered for the library since the
1980s, contributing to the Foundation felt like a logical step
to give back. Now in retirement and considering my options, the Legacy Circle
allows me to notify the Foundation of my pending gift, which will then help
perpetuate continued library service to our community.
Libraries do enrich our community and are essential.
We encourage you to become part of the Legacy Circle by letting us know that you plan to leave a
gift for the Duluth Library Foundation in your will.

Last year, Mayor Don Ness and the members of the Duluth City
