The document describes a laboratory experiment where students were tasked with recreating a common liquid fertilizer. They were given the fertilizer's nutrient contents and available chemicals. Students tested combinations to find ones that dissolved without precipitates. Their initial mixture was too acidic, but adding sodium hydroxide achieved the target pH of 7. The experiment taught students how to apply chemistry concepts like molarity and solubility rules to solve a real-world problem of creating a liquid fertilizer.

Solving The Catastrophe
e What exactly was it that needed to be solved? Well as it
turns out we didn't really need to solve a problem at all.
We had to instead learn how to create a fertilizer that
someone else has created before, and simply figure out
how it is that they did it.
e Fertilizers are used to keep plants healthy, and for this
lab, our TA gave us a label from a common fertilizer that
is actually used in the open market. From there, our job
was to recreate the fertilizer in a lab setting and learn
the processes involved with doing so.
e By doing this lab exercise we learned not only how to
make a fertilizer, but also how to use various pieces of
equipment in the lab, how to mix, create, use, and treat
chemicals, and lastly, how to just simply run a lab
experiment in general as a whole.FOOD

The Basics %%
SHELT
e Tostart off the experiment, we were given a few basic
but key pieces of information and rules to follow as a
guideline.
e Recipe: 8.0% Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. It
was also 1.5% Magnesium.
e Some of the other information that was given to us was
the chemicals that we had available to use in our lab in
order to create the fertilizer.
e Using this starting information, the equipment we had in
the lab, and our general understanding of chemistry, our
group was able to begin creating the fertilizer. How we got Started and our
Initial thoughts
e Atfirst, to be honest, our lab group had no clue what to
do in order to start because the labs was written up in a
way where instead of telling us what to do, we just had
to go and figure it out for ourselves.
e Inorder to solve this dilemma our group had to sit down
for a few quick minutes and discuss how we were going
to go about completing this lab correctly.
e Once everyone had agreed on a plan of action, we
showed our results and plan to the TA, and after her
confirmation we began our ee and this is how
we did it...
