Promoting Sensible Driving in the Countryside

Route History
MAP NO. GRID REF ROAD NO. COMMENTS
www.greenlanedonegal.com
You may have seen references to Greenlaning and wondered what it is all about.
Greenlaning is driving Public Rights Of Way (PROW) where vehicular rights exist.
Primarily these are Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs).
We, Greenlane Donegal, promote the sensible driving of these Green Lanes.
Often Greenlaning is termed Off-Roading. In actual fact nothing could be further
from the truth. Green Lanes are public roads that have an unmetalled surface
and to drive them you have to have a road legal vehicle, driving license,
insurance, car tax and MOT certificate.
If you are Greenlaning and Off-Roading then this implies that you are driving off
the vehicular right of way (the road) and as such would be committing a serious
Road Tracffic Offence. We prefer that Off-Roading is used for genuine off-roading
activities where people hire/rent the land from the owner and drive with their
permission off the road on that land. This can be everything from fields to rock
quarries.
Should you wish to get involved in Greenlaning then Greenlane Donegal can
assist you with where to drive and ensure that you drive sensibly and enjoy the
hobby/pastime.

Ensure you have up to date maps. Before setting out to remote areas check the
weather forecast and let someone else know where you are going and when you
are likely to return. Ensure you have adequate fuel for the journey and check all
levels before setting out. Never enter private property without permission of the
land owner. It is a good idea to walk a route prior to driving it, to
determine its ability to sustain traffic, if in any doubt turn back. Ensure your
vehicle is maintained to a high order and up to the task. Avoid travelling alone.
Maintain a reasonable distance between vehicles. Wildlife faces many threats
and many Unsealed Rights of Way are valuable habitats, take care at all times and
be particularly watchful in spring and summer. Avoid areas of special
Scientific interest. Study the Country Code and follow it at all times. Always leave
the countryside at least as good as you found it.
Do not travel on any Unsealed Right of Way when they risk being affected
beyond a point of natural recovery once the weather improves. Do not use any
Unsealed Right of Way that may be damaged by the wheel pressure applied
by your vehicle. Gates that are secured open should be left so, all gates that
are found closed or swinging open should be closed behind you.Travel within
existing wheel tracks, never create new ones. Where several exist search out the
original route. Take your litter home with you. Carry a bin bag and collect any
litter you may see along the way. Do not scare livestock or wildlife. Do all you can
to avoid polluting any water ways.
Use only rights of way with known, proven or provable vehicular rights.
Report any obstructions to a Right of Way to the Donegal County Council and
to Greenlane Donegal.
If the route is not obvious on the ground, ask locally, or check on the maps held
at the local authority offices, or consult with Greenlane Donegal.
Ensure your vehicle is fully road legal. Rights of Way are subject to the same
laws as normal sealed roads
Do not practice recovery techniques on any public Right of Way.
Keep children and dogs under supervision.
Guard against all risks of fire.
Clean down front and rear vehicle lights and number plate before returning to
the main road.
Respect the environment and all other users. Common sense and common
courtesy will ensure a future for our lanes.
Keep to the defined track. Detour only to pass immovable obstructions. Be
critical of your own driving ability and equipment when assessing an
obstruction; it is your right to abate a non-lawful obstruction, but do not commit
yourself to a bigger task than you are equipped for. When travelling in groups,
keep to a small number four or less. Split larger parties up and either use a
different route or allow a good interval to elapse before following. Use a winch
only with extreme caution and if circumstances demand it. Ensure you use only
the correct equipment and techniques. Avoid mud. Where the surface may easily
be damaged, be very gentle on the throttle to avoid wheel spin. Never drive on
moors and marshland. Practice minimum impact driving at all times.
Practice driving as quietly as you can. Be considerate of other users at all times. If
your right to travel is challenged, discuss; if not resolved, then leave as requested
until status is rechecked. Travel at a quiet and unobtrusive pace and as slowly as
practicle; we recommend a maximum speed of 12mph when driving on an
unsealed Right of Way. Avoid damage to trees, hedge-rows and boundaries.
Some roads carry vehicular rights but may be too narrow for your vehicle. Be
courteous to other road users pull over and stop your vehicle for walkers,
cyclists and horse riders, switch off your engine for the latter. Thank people that
move over to let you pass. Watch out for injured or trapped animals, and report
all suspicious events to the land-owner.

In rainforests, deserts, and other places no ordinary vehicle could reach, you
will find all-terrain vehicles. The moment you venture of the tarmac is the
moment you realise the incredible potential of Greenlaning. This guide is
designed to make sure you get the most out of your Greenlane adventures.
Before you venture Greenlaning, its worth ensuring that you have a good mental
picture of the underside of your vehicle.
Check the position of fragile parts such as the fuel tank, engine sump,
differentials and gearbox so youre less likely to snag them on rocks, tree
stumps and other obstacles.
Check the roof rack and consider it as you drive under low tree branches.
Read the owners manual and discover the purpose of all the on-board
technology and features.
As long as it is safe to do so, test the surface by walking over the ground
before you drive over it.
Before ascending a hill, ensure you know whats over the crest.
Always walk your water obstacle, wearing wellington boots and carrying a
stick for checking silt and underwater hollows. Better to get your feet wet
than your vehicle stuck.
Never hook your thumbs inside the steering wheel, as any kickback from the
terrain could sprain or even break them.

The five Principles of Leave No Trace are;
1) Plan Ahead and Prepare
Where possible travel by public transport or share cars.
Consider the availability of parking.
2) Be Considerate of Others
Respect the people who live and work in the countryside.
Park appropriately - avoid blocking gateways, forest entrances or narrow roads.
Take care not to damage property, especially walls, fences and crops.
Respect other visitors.
Let natures sounds prevail. Keep noise to a minimum.
3) Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife
Dogs should be kept under effective control and should only be brought onto
hills or farmland with the landowners permission.
Some areas stipulate that dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.
Observe wild animals and birds from a distance.
Keep wildlife wild dont feed wild animals or birds.
Farm animals are not pets; remain at a safe distance.
4) Travel and Camp on Durable Ground
If camping along trails either use designated camping sites or seek
permission from the landowners.
5) Leave What You Find
Respect property.
Leave gates as you find them (open or closed).
Preserve the past: examine - without damaging.
Conserve the present: leave rocks, flowers, plants, animals and all
natural habitats as you find them. Fallen trees are a valuable wildlife
habitat; do not remove or use for rewood.
Do not build rock cairns, structures or shelters.
Drive as slowly as possible and as fast as necessary
Know your vehicles dimensions height, weight, width, length, approach and
departure angle, ramp angle, and ground clearance
Know the international hand signals for marshalling
Avoid gear changes while negotiating difficult terrain
Always read the ground as far ahead as you can. If it is safe to do so, walk the
ground before you drive.
Use great care when driving on loose or wet surfaces due to the reduced level
of grip
Be prepared to admit defeat. Back out and try again, or try an alternative route.
Avoid excessive wheelspin at all times but especially on soft ground where the
vehicle can easily lose momentum and even cause environmental damage
Use a gentle right throttle foot
Always keep both hands on the wheel, even when reversing
Always tell someone where youre going, what route you plan to follow, and
when you expect to return.

The Basics
How to overcome obstacles
How to return to the main road
To drive effectivly over rough terrain, a degree of smoothness is required. Make
sure the throttle is applied smoothly and released slowly. This keeps the tyres
from spinning on acceleration or deceleration. Keep steering precise and braking
to a minimum. The driver always controls the vehicle; the vehicle should
never control the driver.
Try walking the ground before you actually drive on it. Approach ridges straight
on. Approach a log, rocky step or ditch diagonally so that three wheels always
retain contact with the ground. Make sure tyres are fully inflated to road
pressures for rocky ground. Straddle deep ruts with your vehicle. This will keep
the vehicle level, reducing environmental impact.
Disengage diff-lock, if applied
Stop and check for any minor damage
Check for cuts in tyres including inside the walls
Check for body damage that will rub against tyres
Check for debris lodged in the underside of the vehicle and in the tyres
Check that lights, windows, and mirrors are clear
Check that number plates can still be read
Check that all equipment is secure
When a deeply rutted track takes over the steering
As you drive along a deeply rutted track, take special care if the ruts are cut into
slippery ground. Indeed, you may be unaware that the wheels are not pointed
straight ahead until grip becomes available and the vehicle suddenly veers to
one side.
Unless you are going downhill, the best way to avoid having your wheels
locked by a rutted track is to relax your grip on the steering wheel
occasionally, while keeping a frictional grip with your palms. This will allow
the wheels to regain the straight-ahead position. The tyres may not be able
to grip the slippery sides of the rut and you will be unable to turn the
steering wheel to the left or right.
