MONKSWOOD WAY, STEVENAGE, HERTS SG1 1LA
WHY DID YOU DECIDE YOU
WANTED TO STUDY AT
NHC?
I had decided sixth form
wasnt for me as I wanted to
study something that would
give me skills to take me
straight into the workplace;
the project based learning is
what attracted me because
I liked the idea of mixing
theoretical work with
practical work. I also knew
a lot of my friends were
planning on studying there.
HOW LONG DID YOU
STUDY FOR AND WHAT
LEVEL DID YOU REACH?
I studied for two years
reaching Level 3, receiving
a diploma in Childcare
and Education: Childhood
Studies.
WHAT WAS YOUR
FAVOURITE PART OF THE
COURSE?
Going on placements was
my favourite part of the
course because we got to
put our skills to practice
and at the end gain a really
good reference for future
job applications. My family
placement was a particular
highlight as they were really
friendly and made me feel
welcome; I still keep in touch
as their childcare contact.
HOW EASY WAS IT TO
FIND EMPLOYMENT
AFTER?
I got a job relatively quickly
after leaving NHC; within a
month after leaving. With
good references after
completing my family and
work placements, and a Level
3 qualification, my time at
NHC definitely made it easier
to find a job.

WHERE DO YOU WORK
NOW?
I have been working at
Treetops Day Nursery in
Stotfold coming up for a year
now as a permanent full time
member, five days a week
between 7:50am 6pm. I work
in the Crocs room which is
for 3-5 year olds.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS
FOR THE FUTURE?
I plan to continue working at
Treetops for another year.
Next I am planning to go to
Australia to become an Au
Pair; a great way to see the
other side of the world whilst
continuing my professional
development.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY
AT WORK LIKE?
Its really fun for children at
the nursery as there are lots
of activities they can choose
from during free flow play;
we have the maths table, the
home corner (role play), the
reading area, and the wet
room; an area designed for
messy play such as painting,
drawing, play dough etc.
We also plan activities in
advance to promote the
development of our key
children; for example, finger
painting promotes the Fine
Motor Skills and Sensory
Development of the children.
We take observations of this
on our key children.
The children love the garden
as there are lots of fun
activities such as the digging
area and scooters. We take
them there at different
points during the day; this
also promotes their holistic
development.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY
MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Working with the children
is my favourite part of the
job; getting to know them
all individually and learning
their characters. Seeing the
children grow and develop,
reaching the next steps
in their learning is also an
aspect of the job I enjoy.
A group of twenty students,
studying Health and Social
Care, had the opportunity
to work alongside staff
members at Providence
Court care home to get
real life work experience.
Many had already decided
which role to pursue in
the health and social care
sector, but for those who
were undecided, it gave
them an insight into what
opportunities might be
available in the future.
Sarah Richards, Level 3 Health
and Social Care student said: It is
fantastic to be able to experience a
different role within the care sector,
and I could really see myself working
here.
Little Rockets is a childcare facility run
as a Learning Company run by NHC. Our
students gain experience within a live work
environment, whilst our staff and students can
access great value childcare. Students working at Little
Rockets are fully supervised by fully qualified members
of staff, and by learning on the job our students gain
additional skills and experience, which look great on their
CV and to future employers.

Kelly Craik, a BTEC

the issue of
social exclusion
